I sort of skipped step one. I don't have a very impressive portfolio, but I found a very talented artist making music with their cellphone. I downloaded the audio and mixed it as best I could and sent it back to them as a gift. They liked it so much that I landed a paid gig mixing an EP for them!

I only record singer songwriters. Usually an acoustic guitar or piano. I have a great piano in my studio and 5 nice acoustic guitars that people can use. I don't usually record bands cause I don't have the space but singer songwriters are everywhere and the will pay for recordings and I can turn them out quickly. If you can become a specialist in a particular area, you will be surprised how much work you can get.

That's the sorta stuff I wanted to hear. I'm in the middle, i'm charging clients, but mostly i'm charging them buttons so need to up my rates, but don't feel my portfolio is yet strong enough, but i'm getting there and setting up and entire soundcloud page of songs/albums i've either produced, recorded, mixed or mastered, which I think will be a great help for me as I only do this part-time anyways.

If you don't have friends with a band who are ready to record, and trust your skills, join some Facebook groups and make a few posts. That's how I met the first band I recorded for free. It's even easier to find a band who only wants mixing and mastering.

Good video. My problem is the lack of a space to bring clients over. My home studio is in my attic and while it’s perfectly fine for myself and my band, I don’t think it’s a great idea to bring over strangers through my house with all their gear. I feel I’m at the point where this is the only thing holding me back from doing more work.

I’m 28 years old. I’ve already been a piano player/songwriter for years but I’m just getting into recording audio now. Am I a little late to the table? It seems like all of these talented engineers started at such a young age. I know I’m not too old to record for enjoyment but how long does it take to start getting good enough where you can start making some decent side money doing this? hey graham. long time watcher here. just wanted to say i was a little skeptical at the start of the video, having had "portfolio" websites in the past trying to sell my beats, but the hard partis getting the traffic and getting your name out there, so im so glad that you went further into detail and listed an actual process of obtaining clients. The video was really good. Ive recently achieved a level where im confident that im extremely good at mixing and having produced for people and made beats for the past 3 years with no real monetary success, i find myself concentrating on the most enjoyable part of it for me which is mixing and mastering. I think now is the time that i really start to build up awareness of what i can do, ive started to list my services on fiverr (the freelance app) and im starting to put together a business plan for the mixing side of things. As i dont plan to have a place to record drums, do you think there is a market for mixing bands stems after theyve recorded independently, or do you think stem mixing is more of an EDM, hiphop producer market. To be more specific, how is the demand for mix engineers that dont operate in "professional studios" (where youre allowed to be loud). thanks again for the vids. Tommy

ITSTOMMYNUTTER I think that mixing through pre-recorded stems is applicable in most genres. Glenn Fricker (from Spectre Sound Studios, great channel on recording and mixing metal) says that a lot of the time clients tell him that they only want to record guitars, or drums, or do only the mixing with him, whatever. According to him, at, least, it's a common situation (so it shouldn't be hard to find that kind of work) and the best thing to do is to be cool if they wanna do business with someone else. Certainly not rare.

Urmi saha Recording inside a DAW is a straight-forward process. The best thing to do is try out a bunch of different DAWs and see which ones you like best. Maybe it'll be Reaper, or Pro Tools, or Cubase, or Live. The right DAW is one that is right for you, one you are comfortable using. Now, to record vocals, you're going to need a microphone as well as your interface. There are good options for pretty low amounts of money but whatever you can afford should be fine. Also remember that if you're doing it long-term it's important to have a sound-treated environment for recording as well as listening (or use headphones). Best of luck!
