These guys are bulk-mixers who should probably be charging double what they are. If you have those kinds of accolades and only charging $250-300/song, you're devaluing the market for people with almost zero street cred but competitive talent. Just my take

I pay 200 for a mix and master to a guy with no placements on any of the songs he’s worked on. He does a great job, but this means someone who has a legitimate legacy should be charging $500-1000 especially working with billboard topping artists

Hi, Graham. I will use PM to follow through with this query. In regards to "who is your client?", my client would be newbie Christian singer-songwriters, of whom I will search my local churches for talent. I have a plan on how these artists might fund the production cost of their debut into CCM. Look for a PM from Jon Usry. Thank you, brother.

This is a great video, Graham! The fees for these mixers are shockingly low. I'm a professional mixer in Nashville and even when I started out I don't think I made less than $300 per mix. Your methodology of mixing is really great and I like how that would bring consistency to your mixes. Cheers man!

Hi Graham, after spending thousands at various local studio's and having to work on their schedules, I am finally going to dive into my own Home Studio. I am going to follow your advice and start low costs per your $350 studio from 2017 (unless you have any updated suggestion) however, I do want to start with the best computer. As I upgrade in the future, I don't want to be concerned about the computer itself. If you were able to go now and purchase a new computer used specifically for, Home Recording Studio only; what would you buy? Thank you

For the price of a Mac mini 2020 with an i7 (I believe the higher cpu is a 6 core i5) you can custom build a monster for music production. If you need to go Mac... Yep, maybe thats the best choice... But if you want performance per $ go for a custom build pc with windows 10 and an amd procesor, the 3900x 12 core/24 threads is amazing for the price (I use its big brother 3950x 16 cores/32 threads and I couldnt be happier), 16 to 32 gigs of ram, nvme for the OS, and now that the prices of ssd and hdd have lowered you can take all the storage you need pretty cheap. Also, if you need mac you can build a hackintosh pretty ez right now with intel cpus. Best wishes, if you have any question feel free to ask... I will try to answer as best as my spainiard english can!

@AriJordan
@AriJordan 3 жыл бұрын
You don't need a degree. Your experience should be more than enough, take it from a guy who attended and completed college for this and several other fields. Use those sessions that you previously recorded as your stepping stone to gain more experience. Use those sessions for your portfolio.

My problem is the clients I usually attract are total noobs who don’t even know the value of using a pop filter. One client gave me 500 short snippets of stems and expected me to put together a lead vocal from all of them. Each stem was literally one or two words or a part of the phrase. He also wanted me to re-record his full instrumental as the mixing engineer. I need a way to get higher quality clients. And I am on all of the usual freelance sites.
@SLlNKl
@SLlNKl 3 жыл бұрын
how do you deal with that? like will you do it and just get paid, and how do you deal with unhappy clients unwilling to pay for unreasonable expectations?
@MixingGBP
@MixingGBP 3 жыл бұрын
@@SLlNKl I deal with it on a case by case basis. I truly try to be patient with my clients and teach them everything I know because I remember when I was new to this and literally didn't even know what a DAW was let alone a parametric eq. For clients that have a great attitude and are pleasant to work and talk with, I remain patient and teach them. It's fun for me. For clients like the 500 stem client, I had to cancel the gig quickly because he was trying to milk my talent in a very bossy and pushy manner. He was trying to push me way beyond what a typical mixer would get paid to do, plus the arrogant attitude and terribly verbose communications about abstract musical concepts he tried to get me to understand was way overboard for the time he paid for. I usually don't care how talented the client is or is not, but let's just say that some singers simply should not have access to microphones and DAWs, lol.
@SLlNKl

@@MixingGBP yeah that sounds like it'd take a lot of restraint. Can I ask how you learned and when you felt confident enough to start charging people?
@MixingGBP
@MixingGBP 3 жыл бұрын
@@SLlNKl I learned by watching Graham and several other youtubers. I also read a few books and talked with people about music and mixing. I was new to mixing when Graham put out his 30 mix tips in 30 days series. I think he did 2 of those series. I watched every one. I also learned by making song after song, after song...mostly covers of songs and a few originals of my own. I tried mixing those songs to sound like the pro versions I covered. I never came close, but that wasn't the point of what I was trying to do. I was trying to have fun and find my voice as a mixer. I didn't start charging for my mixing until I wrote and released about 3 of my own original albums where I wrote, played, mixed and mastered everything. They got some positive feedback from people, so I then started to think about how to make a little cash from this and put myself out there on the usual freelance sites. After that, it was just a waiting game for clients to approach me and trust me with their song based on what they heard from my work on my own songs. I also think that my patient attitude and being professional in all situations good and bad has helped me.

Plugging in any headphones to laptop directly without and audio interface make headphones sound hollow. And in case of the phone.. it's probably not powerful enough to power the headphones properly or has a bad audio output.
