What if the charter is booked through a territory where VAT does not apply ie Gibraltar? Also for crew if they are hired through a Gibraltar company and paid in Gibraltar how would that affect the tax situation?

Well one idea could also be to look into "support industries" such as toy manufacturers, shipyards, training providers, maritime law firms, etc. depending on your background and then to take your career forward from there...

The best way to make money out of yachts is to become a charter broker and become a 20% man :)

I would recommend drafting a sample budget for a 60 m vessel purchased for $20 million. Assume the summer in the Med and winter in the Caribbean. What crew would you recommend and what toys, any special features like yoga lessons, personal trainers, chef lessons? What typical weekly rate and what range of weeks sold. A practical example would be great and could include assumptions about the Cannes Film Festival and the Monaco Grand Prix and Christmas or New Years. You aren’t giving away the store as each vessel is unique but the toys and events have lots of file footage. You can highlight the value of positioning the boat; the value of toys; and the value of trading New Years for Christmas, etc. You could even highlight a couple of sample yachts that you manage.

A 60 meter for $20 million? Err... I would think you are probably looking at a 30 year old yacht maybe in serious need of an overhaul. More like $60 million, and that is still not a new build.

SYC, would it be possible for you to form a syndicate of interested owners and run your own Super Yacht again? You could charge different buy in rates depending on what time of year the investors want to use the vessel for themselves. Or maybe just get investors to buy in and run it as a commercial enterprise? You know more than me, but I'd be interested in your thoughts!

It is surprising to me that a superyacht could pay it's entire yearly operating costs (assuming low owner usage) from just two months of Mediteranian charter bookings. Might that not imply that extending those charters to the Caribbean as well might actually be profitable?

Perhaps, but the charter demand in the Caribbean isn't as high as the med. Plus the cost of shipping across. In a lot of cases for dual season yachts you would need to offer rotation to the senior crew this increases the running costs. Insurance premiums will be higher. Plus more additional costs.
