As a former yachty and a regular viewer of the Below Deck shows I think that Tristan was generally correct in his review. A few insights: The crew who dropped the anchor was not green but allegedly had experience. He even says that Sandy is not like the 'other captains' that he has worked for. The chief stew ws upset that he third stew was totally green but her CV was full of fake experience, Also I agree that the crew should not smoke and should keep their cabins clean. Charter guests sometimes explore the boat and wind up in the crew area.

Arience, a 60 metre yacht, has a crew of 16. A Captain, Chief officer (mate) chief engineer, second engineer, Bosun, two deck hands, Chief steward, Second steward, five 3rd stewards (of which one is a masseuse) and 2 chefs (one head chef for the guests and a crew chef) But Arience does seem unusually heavy on stewardesses (7) and light on deckhands.(2 plus a bosun)

In the industry for 3 years now. Such an awesome video!. Altho I have to say. With a 4 month live onboard family, I do allow my stews to smoke on the bow. Hi Tristan, Great to hear your opinion. Sadly this show is purported to be what superyacht crew are like. Drinking to the point of passing out, smoking not only on the bow but the side decks, members of the crew continually hooking up, crew playing up and getting excessively drunk on shore. In one of the clips you viewed a third stew had lied on her resume (to the extreme ) and the chief stew was pissed because she was sub-standard whilst the captain kept praising the third stew, apparently lying on your resume is not a problem. If you ever watched the show I am sure you would cringe at the attitudes and behavior, especially the continual put-downs about guests and the lust for tip money. Definitely not an AWOL standard crew.

5:06 To some extent this is true in any industry - when you start at a new workplace, in the same field you have worked in before, the new workplace is usually very different in so many ways. But people mentioning what they did at their last workplace can be useful and constructive depending on the tone and context of how they share that information. It can help with process improvements, efficiency of operations, freshening things up etc. It also depends how it's received by employers - it could be taken as a criticism and personal attack, or it could be taken as purely a suggestion and food for thought. I would say the Captain would only benefit from encouraging experienced crew members to share how they did things previously, because it isn't committing to changing anything, it is just giving you options to compare and contrast, if nothing else.

I read or saw a YT vid that you didnt get on with all the crew or production team and you did say in one charter that the way some crew speak to others was an issue. It seems to me, and Ive watched all season on all 3 BD shows, and now on S9 with Fraser and Jakes bromance/crush (Fraser being openly Out and Jake , on his words, Sexually Comfortable), and they so far have made out many times.. anyways I do appreciate that Bravo is representing LGBTQI crew/guests in many charters, Kyle opening out to you, and you to him, Kates little adventure etc etc, it does help spread the word Live and Let Live... So happy for you that you got to Chief Stu and did a stint as a Chef, really hope you make something of your skills in pastry and dessert work - clearly you have a flair. Your Tweets surprised me, you be you. Love that you have your man Alexis, and your IGs. I have seen a couple of the Below Decks shows but my clear impression was that I was watching a reality show rather than the professional operations of a charter boat. Hi Tristan. I am ex Navy so I do cringe my way through these shows as bad seamanship is on display, but I sort of enjoy them as slow motion train wreck entertainment. I have noticed that the casting people who do the hiring seem to plant one plonker/incompetent/trouble maker on the exterior team and another on the interior team knowing they will cause havoc and in havoc and conflict you have a TV show. The producers also cast likely romantic pairings and people with personal problems - alcoholism, broken relationships etc and this amps up the likelihood of emotional melt downs. As for charter guests, clearly most are cast to be 'characters'. Many situations are contrived. Does this show help or hurt the yachting industry? I suspect among serious potential charter guests who can afford to spend $100,000+ on a charter, it could turn them off or create a false expectation.

I honestly don't think captains in the real world would tolerate the amount of drinking that went on on the show, but then again, they had to create some kind of over the top drama

100% every charter I've worked on no smoking for safety & passengers don't want to smell it, only boat/s I could smoke on was prawn trawlers but that's a whole different boat. Really like ur view on the show mate.

Hi Tristan, A nice video where I get a little peek of you as a captain. First of al: I would guess your a fantastic boss to work for. I'm in the yachting industry but if I was I definitely would want to work at AWOL. I would guess you would do the same for your crew as your boss did for your when your grandfather? died. I guess you are a sincere and righteous captain and person and you would do anything for your crew as long they work at the same goal as yourself. A successful charter en and very happy guests. Also for you: good job on the channel and for being the captain as you are! Greetings from the Netherlands. Stay safe and healthy. Rens.

I like it. Interesting to see it from captain view. As yacht engineer have to agree with all you said... Also your explanation for "normal people - not crew it's interesting ". It's different than hotel - nicely explained on yours experience - Burgers for vegetarians.

Just my opinion the show was more real a few years ago but now it’s all about the drama and I was shocked to see smoking and the amount of alcohol consumed on the boats by the staff…was a good take on ur review 👍🏻🐨🇦🇺

I don't think Captain Sandy has any say in choosing crew. They are all "cast" mmbers chosen by Bravo for looks and drama.

Although I am trying to lead according to formal leadership standards I experience very creative and suprising feedback. I am considering cameras and broadcasting to sort out if any improvement is possible :-)

I think you missed the point about the junior stew she lied on her resume and the head stew had to do extra work because she couldn't, like coffee and bartending basics and she had no idea how to clean the rooms properly.

I spent 24 yrs in the Navy and USCG both as bosn and cook retired from CG as a bosn This Below Deck" series shows, think its just another one of these reality TV shows. But in regard to the anchoring have to say in all my 20 plus yrs of going to sea both on military, yachts, and com;l vsls I never heard an anchor chain called a shackle. All anchor chain is marked in SHOTS....90Ft. the last two shots are usually marked second to last painted yellow the last shot painted red.

As someone who worked on boats in my early 20s (I'm 61 now), as a steward and deck hand on cruise ships, sailing yachts and motor yachts, I can honestly say that of all the crew who appeared on the Below Deck series there were only two members I'd have employed - Malia White and 'Bugsy' Drake, who were a breath of fresh air compared with most of the others. Almost all of the guys who appeared on the show had issues with female crew members, mostly stemming from a 'frat-boy' mentality. Another thing I found shocking was the poor level of communication between the crew members. I'm not sure if that's a generational thing, but the lack of vocabulary and basic ignorance of the meaning of words often led to miscommunications and mistakes that were totally avoidable. On the sailing yacht I worked on the captain organised a game of 'Chinese Whispers' at the start of each season in order to teach the crew the importance of passing on messages verbatim. A few of the crew members were so toxic that they surely must've been hired by the production team in order to sow chaos onboard. Furthermore, apart from one group of guests in the Mediterranean version of the series - a lovely African-American group, who, despite poor service and food, were totally gracious - most of the guests who appeared were absolutely awful. One idiot even demanded crew members perform and sing an apology for him, while others treated their hideously pampered pets better than the crew and expected the crew to do the same. It's a good job I wasn't working on any of those charters because I'd have physically booted a few of them overboard.
