I actually did that for a number of years... I taught arts and crafts at a local children's book store on Saturday mornings, I taught art lessons through "continuing education" through our school systems.. it was evening classes... I taught sewing for kids through the same system... really, you just have to look around, and you can find them. Some seniors centers even have funds for hiring people to come in and do a demo, or lessons! Great information Lindsay!!

Oh, and our local library actually pays for people to come in and teach classes in various things, from flower arranging to painting, clay crafting, that sort of stuff.

Hectanooga1 - Crochet, Knitting, Jewelry, Crafts, Cooking great tip! Most libraries have a "program" budget and a lot of librarians are scared to teach an art class LOL! (How do you think I got hired LOL!)

Loved your comment on not withholding information on how to do a technique without paying for an additional class! I was at a bead store where I had spent hundreds of dollars in classes, crystals, silver, tools, etc. and asked how to do a wire wrap and they told me I needed to take a $35.00 class! You know it literally takes 1 minute to teach that. This store also treats their customers like thieves and makes you put your purse in a locker while you shop!!!!! Found myself a new bead store!

My aunt is an art director/teacher and has been doing it for 20+ years. She loves it …but the high energy can NOT be stressed enough. But her con, due to sticking to it for so long..she has a studio that she built in her backyard that is huge that she can teach out off. So her retirement (and work space) is all taken care of. Go Auntie!!!! I am in art school and she helps my stay focused..and that is not easy. I did take a business class in my program and I highly recommend it for all art students. Be realistic and get skills where you can eat while being artsy!!!

I would LOVE to have the chance to teach art, but.....I am no where near being called a professional artist. I did not go to school for art. As a matter of fact I went to college for Accounting and ended up managing a store for 20 years! I have just dabbled in art since I was a child and then a few years ago decided I wanted to start crafty things. I now am into Mixed Media. How would someone like me even start up a business or classes being that They are not someone who studied art or ever worked in an art business? I love your videos and have been watching you for years. I want to say that what you said about not holding back anything you know about art is what truly makes you a lovable, kindhearted and talented person. thank you so much for all you do with your teaching, I love watching you.

Thanks....I so agree with the high energy requirement...We just began our 7th year of our after school program. While registering a new family last night the mother commented on the passion that I obviously have for my job...When sharing art projects with the kids (usually about 40 ) the high energy (since I don't know anything else) I hadn't thought about it...it's so crucial to have honest to goodness fun while you're sharing....I've been hesitant in doing classes outside of my regular job-but you've inspired me....thanks so much again and I do enjoy watching your shows. Thank you so much! I have been teaching a card making class at the local senior center for about 9 months. You gave some great input on actual questions that I have had in my mind about how to make this more appealing and how to have more income from the classes. Great advice and ideas! When my youngest was in elementary I taught ( for free ) all 4 classes of 6th graders how to sand paint. All of those children had a blast and the pictures were so good. I like teaching young children they are like a sponge and building up there confidence make them better artists. Thank you

Wowzie!! You sound like a younger me.. L O L!! I taught public school K-12 for 18yrs.. retired.. (the schools have now eliminated art from their programs.) Worked part time at a day care art program.. (both gigs.. require lots and lots of patience.) Many parents are looking for a cheap babysitter. Taught from home.. We turned a 3 car garage into a studio. Turned a warehouse into a working studio space for adult artists.. where they could work and display works for sale.. Did the Adult classes and workshops and now do free-lance work. Now that I'm in my 70's It is easy extra income. work about 20 hrs a wk. But being organized, business minded, and flexible are a requirement.. TFS... great video..

Hi Lindsey- great info. I am an art teacher, teaching in secondary school 11-15. I thoroughly enjoy it-however you are right- the paperwork, the grading, making sure I am meeting the outcome expectation ect are very time consuming. I wished I could work independently. But for now, teaching is what I enjoy, it is stable and I love it.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I agree that you should share what you have learned . I have 35 years as a florist i love it very much. I have a associates degree in interior design it has helped so much. Im getting ready to teach others this profession. Im charging $ 50 for 5 hours that includes suppliers. Im renting a large room at a crafts center $ 350 a month i make that in one day. Just do your research. I advertise on Craigslist , photo copies of sign you can display at other buisness of what you teach. Thanks for your insight.

You are SO correct about the library situation. I work in a library and offer card making classes. I can't tell you how many times people blow off a class after committing, not realizing or caring about the money that was spent on their behalf by the library. We also have the opposite where people just show up not having registered thinking that it is okay for them to participate even though I've only prepared for X amount of people and the class is full. It can be an absolute frustration. BTW, thanks for supporting your local library.

No wonder you're frugal!!! I used to work in radio as a DJ, too. I know ALL about stretching a dollar until it almost snaps! Lol. I also worked the early morning and overnight shifts on the weekends while reporting traffic with a split shift full-time during the week. I got out of that business as technology (when all the songs, PSAs, commercials, tags, etc - everything - got put onto one big computer) came in and the need for a personality on air went out....oh yeah, and when it was obviously becoming a monopoly faster than you could say Boardwalk. I paid to take a glass fusing workshop at a convention where the instructor was very stingy with information. I left the class feeling that I didn't actually learn anything. This is great stuff! I have been planning on doing exactly what you did for a couple years now. I have my company name and LLC set up and last year had a location next to a scrapbooking store so I knew I could get clients but then we moved. I am now finally getting back to things and needed some inspiration. I would love an example of your classes or how you came up with things. Unlike you I have an art degree and although I do have a lot of ideas focusing on inspiring people I would be curious to hear your tips. I will look at your other videos. Thanks for reaching out with this information to let me know that others have done it and succeeded :) I would mostly be doing it just for fun for myself so luckily I don't need to worry too much about my bottom line but of course I want to break even or make a little money as well.

When I taught scrapbooking in my community, I did it for free in order to create interest with the intention of charging a fee later on if things went well. I found that one week, i would have 15 people and the next there would be one. As you can imagine, things did not work out. I think it was because like you said there was no real investment of money, therefore they had no motivation to show up.

Hi Lindsay, TFS the wonderful tips!!! Have been wanting to offer art classes at my home to kids and adults- would you recommend I get a child care and or teaching license and insurance first or just start out and then get it down the road? is it even needed in your experience? Getting kids over to my home makes me a little nervous thinking if they might get hurt accidentally and parents suing.. Also if one goes to teach outside (library, friends house) do you still need to be covered by insurance or have a license to teach? Thanks so much... Your advice is really appreciated!

I'd love to do it but I am not set up for online teaching yet. But this seems very possible to teach freelance when I have a studio.

I have an art ed degree but have been teaching EFL ( English as a Foreign Language) since graduation. This is because my area is so rural none of the local schools are hiring new art teachers, or like you said don't have the budget. I have done one Sip and Paint on a military installation. I had to get business insurance and sign up for their direct deposit ....we were supposed to meet quarterly and we haven't had a class since last spring....since the base changed their director. Plus many of the students have already moved away from the area. I have come to the conclusion that It's too hard in a rural area to do live classes. I may teach art online just like the EFL classes.

Thank you for your knowledge! I’m an artist and recently started teaching kids at my home. I teach sundays but I feel like I really need the business skills and things to make it run better (tends to get a bit messy and stressful when teaching and I think I prefer just being an artist than teaching :/) I’m curious if you have an order of classes ...or do you pretty much do a new project every week? Right now I can only handle about two kids a class because I do the art step by step with them ...

I like to limit my children's classes to 10. I teach step by step as well so you need to try and make sure the students are all at the same level. You can achieve this buy having a 4 week class and have people commit to that and pay up front (if they prepaid they will show up) and that way they all learn more because you are not trying to catch up the people who missed and you will have a more reliable income too. Win-win!

Very informative and interesting. Thanks for sharing. My art area is in card making. In October I will be teaching (first time) a Halloween card making class at our library, free to test the waters. I believe I should start with ages 6 and up. I have working on designs that are easy yet interesting. I'm kinda nervous, but excited

Mahalo from Kaua'i. Great and very practical tips delivered with a passionate voice. I will give you credit when I am up and running. My niche is that I also teach T shirt screenprinting. I hope to push that aspect. We also have a large tourist and time share population here in Kaua'i. A couple of my friends teach painting. Aloha from Hawaii!

I don't have an art degree or any type of certification for art but I learn from KZbin card makers and then practice it on my own. Any advice for someone like me to get started?

How long did it take you to actually start making money with You Tube? And did you go out and find your own sponsors of did they come to you? Thanks for this video, it was very informative...Bobbie

Bobbie Harrison Hi Bobby, I did not both monetizing my channel for the first 2 years then figured "what the heck" LOL! You do need a lot of views on your videos to make real money, I would not make videos for just that reason, especially starting out. As for sponsored they have all reached out to me, If I was smart I would be more aggressive pursuing sponsors but I'd rather make art LOL! Again, sponsors are attracted to channels with lots of views and subscribers because it is part of their ad budget and they have to choose wisely these days.

Thanks Lindsay! I am currently a vocational teacher in a career school and am completely in love with teaching. Getting to teach art classes would be even better. A lot of the ideas I had you also share so I think that's really cool (and a sign) that I should do it! You had mentioned worming through a school would be an ad tech? Is there an online certification for that, or is there another name for that?

artsguy515 Educational Technician I'm not sure, there are different levels depending on the training you get. Ed Tech1 would be a level higher than a substitute teacher and there there are 2 and 3 and I think you have to have training for special needs children. You can call your local superintendents office fore requirements for you state. Good luck!

+Joana Waszaj depends on the person, I have neither a treaching or art degree, it ios more about wether or not you can communicate to students or if you want to work in public school (you will need a teaching degree for that:)
