Still growing my own farm. I'm at 7 printers, out of my home right now, working with some guys on patreon for appropriately licensed art to print for sale. Hoping to break into the medical market for small 3d printed parts, for a variety of tasks. I've learned how to build printers, but they take time, and you are right: time is what you should charge for, regardless of what the task is. How many advanced materials orders do you get? Great video, thanks Mike.

90% of orders can be done in PLA. rarely do we get prints that need petg or stronger. Also charge 6$ a print hour.

Have you ever had any customers coming in looking for printer parts? EG: raw extrusion materials, belting, hotends, mainboards, etc, etc, etc? That kinds of sales would probably go hand-in-hand better with a store (like your friend in Florida) selling whole printers and such... If I knew there was a small 3D Printing storefront somewhere close to me, and I needed some extrusion, I'd be willing to pay a bit more than online to get it now vs having to wait 3 days to 3 weeks. I appreciate your un-candidness with regards to your 3D Printing business, and it is really getting me excited of the sheer possibilities. There are literally NO shops around me that deals in additive-manufacturing. There's plenty of machine shops and fab shops, but NO additive.
@3DPrintsEverything2 жыл бұрын
yeah thats the opportunity! Take advantage if you can! I honestly rarely get printer part request. when i do its mostly for a nozzle or fan so some one can print that day. Some times its for a motherboard or something but its not worth me keeping a stock of motherboards that may or may not sell this year then next year a new updated one comes in. I would rather just order as printers need to be fixed. Also the margin on printer parts would only be a couple of dollars per orders so I havent dont so much with parts. i do keep my favorite motherboard on hand the lerdge k board.

I think I know the shop you mentioned in Florida that's got a mall location. Stop by there often for a quick filament load up whenever I get an express order and I don't have the time to wait for Amazon to ship a certain color. 19:07 Bruh, you have just described what I hope this journey becomes, and the story of someone else(Or maybe the same dude, IDK, but the machine brands are different) that supplied me with my printers! Headline over: I've been mowing lawns full time because it's a fantastic workout and great money. Bought some "for repair" printers, in pairs, from someone operating out of a storefront refurbishing and selling printers. Up to 6 machines that can be trusted, day by day, with maintenance, checking bed adhesion on the first layer once a day is good enough. I've developed two products that are in refinement stages, and have a couple spin offs that I really should be listing on Etsy, not typing this. But I'm afraid that if these small items (a desk or shelf light sconce) sell well, I won't have time for the main project - a tool holder which illuminates the slot of the tool being used. Reminding the user to replace the tool in it's home, keeping a clean workspace. I recently learned this was a concept the Japanese call 5S "Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain". And I love this! So much time can be saved when you have a properly organized workspace and take that time saved, to keep the workspace organized.

I like your advice. It's all simple stuff that anyone can do, especially the boot strapping. With 3D printers being so cheap and with good print quality, it's easy to build up a print farm as demand increases. What I was wondering was do you just print in PLA or do you print other plastics? What about colors, do you have a set range or charge to get in specific colors?

Im in fortworth and we have amazon warehouses everywhere so I can get about any color of pla or petg with in 1-2 days so I just ask the client and If its not in stock then ill order a new roll. (I do try and give him advice and direction to help...)

I do also charge for this. I have found that about 20% of printers coming in for repair I underbid and end up spending more time on them than whats it worth. Id say if you just unclogging or tuning a ender 3 pro. Go for it. If some one wants their makerbot, prusa, motherboard swapped to a new design its not worth your time as your need to charge much as a new printer generally for your time. But to get 60$ for 20-30$ mins of tuning a ender 3 worth it all day. I do about 5 a month or so.

So when you charge by the print hour, is this the estimated print hour, or the after the fact print hour. IE if a print failed at 99% and you have to start over, do you charge for that? What if it's your fault?
@3DPrintsEverything2 жыл бұрын
I just charge the 6$ a print hour and this covers failed prints with in reason. If your buying for 15-25$ a roll your cost with electricity is some where around . 0.50 to 1.10 a hour. So if your charging 6$ you can cover a couple of fails and still not need to ask the client for more money. If your finding your self on a extra tricky print that even other shops would be challenged with you can tell the client the R&D process of getting their print to work will require some extra money. Rarely do I go negative but some times I just have to eat it and loose a little money.

12:46 "give yourself a couple of good reviews" a little slip of tounge there im guessing...
@3DPrintsEverything3 жыл бұрын
Just being honest, this is a touchy subject, some people view a single review given by a family friend or self as a whole moral no no, personally I think everyone is entitled to 1-5 family and friends reviews to boost their views on google and facebook, if they really do bad work the negative reviews will fly in and over shadow any "fake" ones. That said anyone paying for reviews, asking everyone they can, non customers, 10-20+ reviews faked i do find morally wrong and my statment above would still hold that if they did all this work on fake reviews if the companies service isnt good than it wont matter. But to be clear, writing reviews for your self is not in the spirit of reviews, if you want to be honestly completely just push your early customers to review it, but I would never look down on some one who had less than 5 reviews from their friends and family if they are just starting out. This is such a touchy subject I literally started 3d print everything for profit facebook group because of it. I made a post in another group saying something similar to this and people started finding my google page and negatively reviewing my page which was not called for and I would never condone in my group. We are not here to hurt others people business only build them up. we are not in competition with each other we can work together! So it wasnt a slip but I do want to make sure im clear dont spam your reviews with fake ones, if you need a couple to get started its up to you how you get the first ones.

All those filament printers I bet you spent most of your time just keeping them running

Michael- What are the print models you are printing to make it look super inefficient? You seem stressed!! must be about all of the different styles of PRINTERS @ bay vs. the model print parts you need to make. Please keep the sad stories within.

Not sure exactly everything your saying. The stress is apart of owning a business and I dont want people to get the imprecision this is always easy or stress free. I want to show you the whole experience. At the end of the day the reward and future reward far outweighs the stress it causes me now but for others this may not be the answer for them if they are looking to leave their job or something. We do have many styles as some are better at printing vertain shapes than others.

The only advance to you and your follower is NOT to focus on how many tools you have in your TOOLBOX/WorkBench/Rack-Aray, but how to use them efficiently!!

Don't forget the income from creating models, custom 3D modeling. Learn fusion 360. Buy a tabletop cnc machine when you can, and that can also give you income from prepping files etc. a laser cutter would be cool addition too. Become a maker go-to shop. You can also have 3d printing courses. (maybe sell more printers). refurbish printers for the students to take home. Buy and fix and sell. the idea is to maximize the utilization of the skills you have.
