thanks for the ideas, we have muscadine grapes wild here, was looking for ideas how to distill them. do you use the skins for chicken feed ? lastly, do you strain skins out to prevent burning on the bottom of the pot still?

Hello and thank you for reaching out. I don't strain the skins before distilling. Once done, leftovers are disposed around fruit trees in our yard.

Thanks for sharing this beautiful video. We run a family owned and operated vineyard and started a few years ago to make wine. Now we are running into distillation. We wonder if you could tell us how much of total distillation batch is discarded (heads)? (if any). To what ABV do you distill? And lastly, would it be bad if we collect tails and pore them into the next batch?
@CookingandKids Жыл бұрын
Thank you for reaching out. I know for sure my mom would collect tails and redistill them. As for how much is discarded from 'heads' - I don't have specific amount. Normally I would make that decision based on fragrance and aroma of the liquid same goes for ABV. Since I am not a professional, I would suggest researching web for more info. :) All the best to you and your family.

I've heard that in making moonshine from corn, you want the drip rate of 1-2 seconds with your condenser. I saw in your video it was coming out so quickly! So obviously I am now intrigued as to if you know anything about the speed at which the moonshine comes out affects making moonshine from grapes? Or only with corn
@andrerodrigues89422 жыл бұрын
And do you keep the distiller at a certain tempurature?
@CookingandKids2 жыл бұрын
Good questions. I was not aware there should be a particular drip rate but will look into this bit more. Thank you
@larry0323 Жыл бұрын
Drip rate varies. Just watch your temp and don't go over 172°F. You don't wanna burn it.

I tried to use my potato masher and that did not work at all apparently most of grapes available in the supermarket have a fairly tough skin and so I ended up just throwing it into the blender pulsing a couple of times and dumping the resulting sludge into the primary fermentation vessel

What? You don't know how to make wine? That's exactly what you did before you distilled it. Maybe a little bit primitive method here & there, but it's definitely wine from grapes you made if they fermented.
@CookingandKids2 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are right Moto G4, initial fermentation is similar to making wine, but I never made wine before. Perhaps I will try to do so next year. All the best, V.
@motog4-752 жыл бұрын
@@CookingandKids what I'm saying is before you put it in the still it is actually wine. So yes 👉you did make wine first, then instead of drinking or bottling it you distilled it & made brandy. If you put your brandy in an oak barrel for an amount of time it will attain the colour of brandy too. Or use oak chips. Clearly you did not realize but the process of fermentation of fruit from a juice to an alcoholic state is the process of wine making.
@CookingandKids2 жыл бұрын
@@motog4-75 You are right, this is the first step in wine making but what I don't know how to do is regulating temperature and aging wine properly. As for making brandy, that is exactly what my mom does...:)
