Count me as an LS1 lover. My 2002 Camaro Z28 came from the factory with the LS6 intake, and always seemed to be able to run with cars having 50 more advertised HP in track days. On the chassis dyno at 60000 miles, it put down 305 to the wheels, which is what flywheel HP was rated at from the factory. Judging from the chassis dyno, I estimated it was making 350-360 at the flywheel. Magazine tests from back in the day showed that LS1 F-bodies were making wheel HP that was close to the factory advertised HP, so the 4th-Gen F-bodies were sleepers and great performance bargains. Eventually I upgraded power mildly with a cat-back exhaust, gutted cats, low-restriction airbox, and large MAF sensor. Those made a noticeable gain in power above 5000 rpm. I got a kick out of the cam swap into the stock LS1. The 212 cam picked up 40+ HP over stock, which was 196 intake effective duration. (The factory LS6 cam was 204.) Better yet, the 212 cam picked up torque everywhere. It would have been a great upgrade for me. I did 16 years of track days with it, accumulating ~200 track hours. I thought it would break at some point, then I would put an upgraded engine in. BUT. THE. L. S. 1. NEVER. BLEW. UP. The only problem I ever had with it was two broken exhaust studs and a leaking exhaust gasket on the drivers side. Now it's got 290k miles on it, and doesn't have any mechanical noises. Oil consumption is up to ~1qt per 1000 miles. But the chassis is showing the deterioration of a car that has 19 Michigan winters on it. So it's retired from track use, but performs fine for daily driver duty.

1qt per 1000 miles? Is it leaking or is it consuming it, thats alot. Have you checked the pcv ? If pcv is not blocked, I would take it apart and rebuild it. Seems like the p rings too worn out.

Keep inmind only GM Ls and new Lt motors from factory can handle over 1000 HP on stock GM fasterns crank was something you had to buy a aftermarket Dart type block to do so. With that in mind understand LS loves maxed out parts applications less focus on well I gotta by a drop in after market crank , GM OEM crank will handle a ton that will save you $ for other things you want to do. They are reliable even on stock oem replacement crank bearings, water pump OEM stock fasterns so much more you don't have to waste extra $ on will help you get to your goal faster. But again for a small to cam like you got those HP numbers are rt dealing with non max effort parts. I've sprayed 300 even when progressive nos system wasn't big and could not hurt my sbe motor, a drop pistons rods an ARP studs kit if you want to stay stock cubic inch will give you peace of mind over 1100 HP on stock rockers so much more couldn't be done until LS came out. Tune, gas, plugs will carry you a long way. One time we disassemble LS motor only to gap pistons and reused everything else lietterly all true statements I'm telling you.

That old XR275 cam still works good, not a huge cam by any means. I put that same camshaft in an LQ4 with a TBSS intake, 92mm TB, and LT headers. It's stuffed in a GMT800 RCSB truck, runs really well and wants almost 6500 RPM at the peak. I believe it peaked at 6200, and wasn't down much more than 8-9 HP at 6500.

We keep wanting to run our nose down at "only the LS1", but then you see all this power being made. The proflow was down closer to 15ft-lb at under 5500 over the truck intake, some might not think it's a big deal... The 50HP on the upper end is more important.

Cool look back at the LS1. You can build one today by boring an L33 to 5.7 bore, about 3.900+/-. The interesting point I got out of this test was the OG FAST intake with the RHS heads and the little cam did way better than the Edelbrock intake with the 459 cam in the (apparently) same long block. In fact, those looked really close to 6.0 numbers. Those RHS heads must be very well matched to the FAST intake of old. If I were building one now I’d use the Dorman LS2 or a TBSS, whichever I could find/afford, maybe TFS 215s, and a medium-ish cam. Thanks Richard!

I'm playing with a tired 99' Camaro with a stock ls1 but I think the heads were milled cause compressions around 11 to 1 and 3.42s I just swapped the blown t-56 for one outta 05' GTO so its geared Lil lower now. The car was supposed to be just a doner parts car But It feels really good just banging gears in just a stock n/a Camaro, Not like something thats overpowered, unreliable and unpredictable Kinda like driving go-carts. able to get lil rowdy with my young boys who love Burnouts peeling out and getting sideways. Like being at Disneyland. So the $3000 shitbox has kind of turned into my summer project. I'm gonna race my Buddys 2012 LS7 Corvette he paid $40k hes also the old owner of my car, His ls7 he has now dyno'd around 640hp. with a Cali cam, MSD Atomic intake, and its tuned. I know even with the spare parts I already have laying around (comp Xer 281,Ls6 intake, maybe the Ebay long tubes , HpTuners and some fatty Nitto drag radials) . I still have little to no chance So I gotta dig around my garage and try piece together my old NOS setup. try to make a100 shot and get some decaps tested, On the bright side he's a shitty driver and lil afraid of his pretty lil garage queen. It only has 10k miles in 12 years. So most likely sporting the original factory dried out tires . I just want to earn those bragging rights before that overpriced monstrosity drops a valve! lol

If you can find a set of 243 castings just throw them on stock with a cam in the low 220s 600 lift and you'll be happy. AFR makes a budget casting that replicates the 243s basically but are suppose to be an improvement so I assume they're decent. Some PRC heads might be a good value too. 243s should be worth 15 hp over an stock LS1 head on a cammed engine.

Sweet. I got a 6.0 and recently a ls1. My ls1 seems to respond better down low with it's 862 heads than my 6.0 and ls3 heads. Both have 273 gears both are in 01 camaros but the ls1 car had a built 4l60 vs the 6.0 with a 4l80, same 3600 stall rating. My 6.0 gets stomped in the 1/8th and 30 roll, but on the hwy it's pretty even till about 80mph then it's no contest. Oh and the same 228 cam

4l80 might be part of the issue. Taller first gear, much heavier, and because it is so much beefier parasitic losses are higher. Biggest thing is probably the gearing though. Stock 4l80 gearing is not very friendly to cars without big hp numbers.

Definitely the transmission is the difference.80s first gear is tall and long eats a lot of power.60s are weaker but man they don’t rob any power and with any gear it will chirp the tires. Put 410 in the 60 and it will feel like you added 100ftlbs of torque
