NEW INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEO 200 FPS Bow step by step to go with Book here • How To Build a High Pe...
Make the Most Unique Primitive Bow. In this video to demonstrate how unique it is I purposely Break and Rebuild the Sinew Composite Bow Step by Step. I made this bow using only primitive natural materials. Primitive technology at it's finest. Easiest way to make a high performance primitive bow that will last forever!
The bow is only 52 inches long and is made from bamboo, maple and sinew. It is only 5 parts glued together, then sinew applied.
1st prepare the bamboo billets/limbs using a farriers rasp or shinto rasp. Trace the profile and shape to the line with the rasp. Then rasp, file or sand the back (waxy layer -rind) off the limbs.
Use a fine file to make tip of limb where siyah will mate up perfectly flat and level.
Then take a sawzall blade or similar to carve in shallow vertical grooves on back of limbs.
Then glue the siyahs to the limbs and align them perfectly.
Next glue the limbs to handle and align perfectly. Let cure.
Then using rasp shape handle area to your liking..it is best to go less than desired as the sinew and final wrap will add girth to overall handle thickness.
Preparing sinew - twist it to break it up do not pound it. Pull apart long strands and begin to create bundles. soak the sinew bundles in room temp water, then comb them out several times to remove/clean it. Rinse and repeat this step a couple times. Get your glue started. Mix the granules in water 1 to 3 ratio and let absorb. Then put in warmer and begin to mix/stir to desired consistency. It is best to be like thin syrup. The warmer I use maintains this consistency nicely, link below.
( i soaked the broken limb in warm water to remove and salvage some of the sinew. It was used to wrap the handle. New sinew was used for the new limb)
The warmer also lets off nice steam and placed near limb being worked it does a great job of keeping everything warm and moist during this process.
I use an old dog comb for years to comb out my sinew works perfect. Comb out all excess tissue, grease, short pieces, and knots. Once this is done use a plastic scraper to smooth both side like a flat sheet. Use warm water to keep sheets moist.
Apply glue to limb, then to both sides of sinew sheet and apply to limb.
Then smooth out with fingers, and apply more glue to it
Then apply glue to handle area and wrap using same technique.
Then wrap/bind siyah area using single long strands of sinew soaked in glue. Repeat for other side, overlap sinew in center under wrap.
Reverse (very slightly) string the bow by tying a string in each top hole of siyah and immediately place it in a controlled climate. Hang it up somewhere from string out of reach of critters.. Let hang until cured.
If you have a way to check its weight(mass) weigh it next morning then note this weight and date.
Weigh it in one month, then weigh it every week thereafter to see its changes and when it stops.
Keep tension on string to prevent sinew from delam during curing. The string will get loose after several days, just pull it a little more into reflex then tighten string up to 6 inches.
Use shinto rasp to remove excess sinew and bamboo off limbs to begin the shaping/tillering process. Then sandpaper.
Constantly checking each limb for balance of power my knee tillering technique. Find stiff/thick spots and even out with rest of limb. Once you get close begin to count strokes on each side and stay this way until it is tillered.
Once limbs bend enough to string the bow, prepare the siyahs.
Start with shinto rasp, then sandpaper, then scraper or blade. String bow check tiller.
Use needle files to clean off edges of sinew on limb edge. Then fine sand limbs.
complete finish covered in my bamboo horse bow users manual. Natural jute cordage (waxed) 2 ply is inexpensive, offers the most positive grip in all weather conditions, can be redone simply. Bow instructions ⤵️

thanks so much for the helpful and educational video. learned many cool tricks from it man such as the shredding sinew twisty twisty. 5:14 I see the child loading the arrow the proper way (in between string and bow)! awesome job! loading it that way is so much more effective to shoot quickly! im so proud of him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I see compound bow shooters grabbing the arrow midshaft and trying to nock it as the arrow nock fiddles back and forth and I sadly have to look away :(

I'm curious how the bamboo limbs hold up in the cold weather? I'm from Michgan and the cold from a day in the winter woods during our winters can be tough on any bow. I assume they hold up just fine, but thought I'd ask out of curiosity. Does the cold have any affect on their memory or tension under stress? I've seen a couple commercial(cheaper) synthetic bows fail from cracking and just not keeping their flexability in really cold weather. Thank you for sharing your skills and knowledge!

Sinew needs to cure for minimum 3 months some places 6 or more based on climate at time of building the bow. You can begin to work on it usually after a few months but understand it will change in draw weight over time as sinew is constantly changing

I hope that I can remember to check this, to see if you have responded… But I would like to purchase your time as a Consultant on Bow Types for use in Gaming Miniatures and Video Game Elements so that we can create props and features of the different factions that are as closely matching the real-world Cultures we use (and that other Authors whom we are using) as “Templates” for “In-Game Cultures” as we can possibly get. Part of this problem is compounded by already existing assets that might need to be altered (whether 3D Meshes for Video Games, or for 3D Printing, or the Old-School Green-Stuff Sculpted Miniatures cast in “White Metal” - what used to be a Lead Alloy).. But I would like to get rates, etc. for your time, and how you would like to be credited if we reach a deal, etc. And I might think about buying some Bows once I have re-established an income stream post-pandemic (which shut-down our Studio nearly completely).

Well friend, I didn't mean to sound confrontational. I was sincerely curious if primitive type bows were incapable of being held at full draw for any length of time-which would necessitate snap-shooting whether it was the best choice for accuracy, or not. So far as holding momentarily at full-draw, this wasn't just a practice of modern sport archers. I read somewhere, that one of the training exercises that Olde Tyme Samurai used occasionally, was to hold the bow at full draw for inordinate amounts of time-10 or 15-minutes-until severe shaking and cramps set in and then to still hit a modestly difficult target upon release. Of course, you wouldn't have done that doing a real hunt or during war, but if the Samurai weren't in the practice of holding at full draw at least momentarily, the long-hold exercise would be unlikely to have ever been invented. Modern Japanese Archers all hold momentarily at full-draw… So it isn't just a practice of effeminate Olympic Style Target Marksmen. …..RVM45

@@RVM451 haha I love it! Thats too funny! In all honesty I practice archery the way that makes me feel best and the way that will benefit me in what I want out of archery. We all have different reasons why we pick up a bow and arrow. We can all be called archers but at same time be very different.
