The bIImaj7 from phrygian is a great chord to use as a modal interchange in regular tonal music to give it some color and tension. Great video as always, Tommaso

Phrygian from my experience is one of those scales that fights a bit to sound like one if its modes if you don’t emphasize the tonic enough, but Phrygian Dominant is the complete opposite and therefore is great to use for a solo part in a Phrygian song because it has so much flavor with less need for harmony to emphasize the tonic. Phrygian is one of my favorite modes, and this is a little trick I learned from using it.

@cactusowo18354 жыл бұрын
@@michaelsmusic3532 [Go to the bottom of the comment to practice suggestions] Piano is just like any other instrument, if you know what notes do you want to play, then learning the technique, which keys to each intervals, scales and that's all, I started playing piano in a phone app, I never managed to play an actual one, I first started improving with minor scales, dorian and mixo (screw major scale lol) so all I gotta do was selecting a key, it was B (screw C major too), then only use all white, C# and F# so you got B minor, the tonality I started building chords from, improvising with progressions like Bm, A, Em, F#m⁷, Gadd9, Aadd6 and so on. If you want to perform actual pieces instead of just improvising, you can try looking for some piece you know you can practice and perform looking up for a music sheet or synthesia tutorial, I would suggest you souls of fire, from dark souls, and sweden from minecraft, two easy piano pieces that sounds allways great.

One of the things I’ve discovered when writing Phrygian melodies is that switching to the Phrygian scale of the iv chord over the iv chord works very well. It stops the iv chord from sounding too tonic, and adds a bit of a locrian flavor to the piece.

I'm not so much of a fan of the "How To make Music With The X Scale On Guitar" videos, but despite that, I'd like to see you tackle the "impossible" modes of Locrian (1, ♭2, ♭3, 4, ♭5, ♭6, ♭7) or Superlocrian (1, ♭2, ♭3, ♭4, ♭5, ♭6, ♭7) or Enigmatic (1, 2, ♭3, ♭4, 𝄫(♭♭)5, 6, 7).

I guess that the sequence of major, minor, diminished, etc. is the same for any phrygian mode, right? Like for 'natural' E phrygian for instance. Thanks, man. Grazie.
@liquidsolids94154 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's correct. He's using A Phrygian as an example, but the scale and chord patterns are the same for all 12 of the Phrygian modes. The best way to learn is to do it yourself - write out each of the 12 Phrygian (or any mode you want) scales, then form the chords in each scale the same way he showed you in the video. Enjoy!
@vitorveras97234 жыл бұрын
One doubt about modes in general: Can I use a mode chord progression and have it's sound without worring too much with what came before it? Or do I have to prepare the song in a certain way?
@Nichi-Ji4 жыл бұрын
Trying to understand what you’re asking here but it’s kind of confusing. I get that you have a modal chord progression but what exactly are you worried about?
@radikaldesignz4 жыл бұрын
Love me some Phrygian. He's right about the ear part, and luckily its sound is distinct enough it's not difficult to pick up what works if you just mess around. Look for it in Flamenco music. There's also quite a bit of Metal that makes use of it for the dark and/or mysterious quality it can add.
@liquidsolids94154 жыл бұрын
One thing you can try in a Phrygian solo is to emphasize the half-step between A & Bb (using our example key of A Phrygian). Also, the Phrygian Dominant scale (which replaces the C with a C#) can sound pretty cool. The contrast of the major 3rd (C#) in a melody over the minor 3rd (C) in the harmony can be interesting. Enjoy!
@AtomizedSound4 жыл бұрын
It’s all over Metal music
@radikaldesignz4 жыл бұрын
@@AtomizedSound I mean, yes, but metal does span the entirety of the modes. In heavier stuff, it tends towards it and locrian and prolonged or thematic dissonance. But neo-classical is an entire sub-genre of metal and I'm pretty sure there are whole albums that never touch phrygian.
@greglawrencemusic4 жыл бұрын
Similar to the Ionian mode, Phrygian is just as easy to play in the first position. (one fret per finger) and makes an easily accomplished 'sweep' without shifting hand or finger position. I prefer Phrygian over Dorian...but I don't know why. lol.
@cactusowo18354 жыл бұрын
If you prefer phrygian over dorian is because you probably hear a lot of flamenco 🎸🇪🇦 It has a bit more exotic and raw spirit than dorian, but that doesn't mean one is better that the other, dorian just has a more organic feeling that the other minor armonies and it has the most fresh sound over all the scales
@davengeo4 жыл бұрын
no mention to the andalusian cadence?
@MusicTheoryForGuitar4 жыл бұрын
That deserves a separate video - especially because it's used in tonal music more than in modal music, so its status as 'phrygian' is debated.
@TedBoyRomarino4 жыл бұрын
Andalusian cadence in A minor would be something like Am G F E7... It's in A harmonic minor, and the phrygian chord would be E7b9 (phrygian dominant). This phrygian scale he's teaching is diatonic, not dominant phrygian from harmonic minor.

Yes, if you're on a keyboard, that's true. That would be E Phrygian. If you take the C major scale (which is all the white keys on the keyboard) and start playing it on E instead of C, then you get E Phrygian.
