This is one of my favorite scales. I love the plagal cadence, iv-I, from this mode. The iv has a very strong pull to the tonic. To my ears the iv has a dominant functioning sound. Yes, there's no tritone or leading tone but, when you apply negative harmony to a V chord you gat a iv chord. I've had many discussions about this. Some say the iv in a iv-I plagal cadence functions as a dominant. Most say absolutely not because there's no tritone or leading tone. I'm curious what your thoughts are about this. Great video, love this channel.

Beautiful video again.... You are really the most knowledgeable music teacher ever.... Just a side note, I don't really approve the other name 'Hindu scale' because it is actually one of the many many Indian ragas... and this one is known as Raga Charukeshi. Ragas are actually quite different from a standard 'scale'. Many things are important in a raga like the emphasized notes in the scale while improvising is fixed and also not all ragas have same ascending and descending notes. However this is not the case here, and we can safely say Raga Charukeshi is similar to the Mixolydian b6 . Greetings :-)

If you struggle to use a diminished triad, try making it a half-diminished 7th chord (m7b5) which is a lot more palatable (unless it's meant to be a fully diminished seventh). Much easier to use, since it's pretty much an inverted m6 chord, much more palatable. Also the 3 chord of Aeolian natural 3 is diminished triad but also augmented triad. For A Aeolian natural 3 that would be C#dim and C#aug. Same with the harmonic minor modes, there is a hidden chord like that.
@metaljay28964 жыл бұрын
6:54 Pretty sure thats an augmented 6th. German or French 6th, I always confuse them, but I know how to spell them. In this case however I would see it as Dm13 in its second inversion, as the 5th is in the bass.

Akshay Babu: Ties happen. Although upon very close inspection one could logically argue there are always discrepancies and and it is our limited ability to track such minor differences. In the end there is enough of a difference somewhere to say that one or the other was indeed first. But that said: what does it matter? I'm currently last, and I happen to think that more fleeting moment is intrinsically more precious because it is so fleeting. So why not have a prize for being last instead? If you were truly last, that would mean you outlived everyone and isn't that "winning"? Whales, elephants, and tortoises all move more slowly, have slower heart rates than other creatures, and it's been shown how this helps them outlive those others. Maybe slow and steady really does win in reality. So isn't it all just a matter of perception and opinion who really wins? Personally, I am walking toward my demise, and I feel no impulse to get there before everyone else does. Just making a weird point about how weird (and potentially backwards) competition is.

Considering this scale, If you called that 'Dm/F' chord a 'BbMaj7/F' ...would that be "switching keys?" -asking for a friend.
@njrous4 жыл бұрын
Sort of! If we look at the notes in the upper structures, Dm has D F and A, whereas Bbmaj7 has Bb D F A, so that's just adding in the Bb note when in A mixo b6 the B is normally natural, so yes it would change a little bit. I wouldn't really be able to tell you what key it's switching to without more context, but that could be a switch to Bb major, Bb lydian, or if we're staying closely to the realm of Mixob6 then it could lead to D harmonic minor!
