You’re better off not using warping. It adds nasty artifacts to transient heavy material like breaks. It’s generally better to take the original funk break & pitch it up to a metronome (or to the pitch that gives the tone you want) & then slice it into segments & put it in a sampler. Generally jungle tracks used more than 1 break too. At least 2, but very often as many as 3 or 4. Amen, funky drummer & cold sweat is a tried and true combination, that was used often. And don’t be too meticulous with programming. A lot of what makes jungle (or classic hardcore) sound old, was the looseness of the break layers. Those little inconsistencies like ghost hits being slightly out of sync or one break triggering a kick with a cymbal on it where the other triggers a snare. It’s all about the interplay between slightly different grooves. There were tunes that just used the amen at different pitches, sure, but if you listen to the really well made stuff from the early 90s (like Nookie, Ray Keith, Omni Trio, Slipmatt) they were all using more than just an amen. ;)

Yea man this is just covering the basics of the break and how to easily get to this point but thanks for the input!

Different warp modes affect the break differently, but im with you on that, however with complex mode it's almost negligible unless, the original tempo varies a lot. I came across a very nice software called Akaizer, it simulates the original algorithm used in the earlier samplers that were used back in the day, you can pitch up/down, do whatever u want with the sample, and export it as .wav and take wherever you want. it's a bit of hassle but it does the job quiet right

Akai S950 and S1000 time stretching added nasty artifacts too, it’s part of the Jungle aesthetic. Warp algos in Live can resemble that sound when used properly.

100% agree with you on not using warp mode @haz:mat , kills the transients and sounds terrible in comparison to warp off when pitching. Not so sure about not being so meticulous with the programming, leave the groove in but love a bit of scatty all over the place breaks :)

@@seifmeniawy3073 akaizer is really good tool, renoise has it in as standard. Shame is they made it sound like a s2000/s3000/s3200 but it takes as much time as a s950. The worst bits out of each one, would be far better the other way round! Best tool if you can't get your hands on a old sampler, doesn't sound too far off on a A/B test.

My bad, I try to work fast thats all and I hadn't noticed until just now that it doesn't play the last sound effect at the end. The fx aren't important anyway, it was more just about the overall sound and showing you on that part that any little sound fx will work just fine.

Mate, it sounds fat as hell ! Just how it use to sound. Often these tutorials by new producers dont really capture that. I'd love to know about your processing here ? Sounds compressed and distorted of course, but i'd like to know everything you did for that sound. Even the bass sounds right ! Cheers !
@thatjimmyperson
@thatjimmyperson 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks man. To be honest theres not much on this project in terms of processing, it was more just getting the right sounds together. I may look at doing a tutorial on the bass distortion but just an 808 with some saturation will get you in the right place.

Fundamentalist :P Ableton is OK if you switch the sample/warp mode to granular and tweak the settings. It's exactly like the Akai cyclic stuff. this video uses 'complex"which is "too good"for that old school vibe.
