Charlie, Thank you for giving credit for this amazing dessert to the city of St. Louis. A lot of St. Louisans, myself included, get irritated when people call this "Paula Deen's gooey butter cake". She slapped her name on a recipe that has been passed around St. Louis, and has been available in virtually every bakery in the city (including the bakery sections of Kroger, Schnuck's, and Walmart) since the Great Depression.

Just made this today. Followed the recipe exactly except I lined my cake pan with parchment paper to make it easier to take the cake out without flipping it over. OMG, this is delicious. I’ve never seen boxed cake mix used this way so was curious what it would be like. I don’t normally buy boxed cake mix, but looks like I might need to start keeping some in the pantry to make this again. Husband and I really enjoyed it. He ate three slices! Thank you for sharing, this is going in my keeper notebook. 😀

Good morning Charlie yesterday I made your delicious Ooey Gooey cake. Let me tell you that’s cake is soooooo good. Those of you that have not made this cake you are missing a delicious treat. My husband like this cake also. Charlie my granddaughter and grandson came to see us I had made your New Orleans Pralines they loved it. Well done! I make ooey gooey butter cakes also but I add variations to it such as sweet potato, pumpkin, apple, chocolate, etc. You are one of the best cooks out there, Charlie. Restaurants are a lot of work, expense and stress, plus the food will not be the same as what you are doing now, for some reason once cooks go from home to restaurant or commercial something gets lost and the food does not taste the same and it becomes inconsistent

Yes it is delicious and sweet too! I wouldn't eat anything else on top of this! It is possible that you can make a lemon one as well. Buy the lemon cake mix and substitute the vanilla for lemon extract. Hope this helps! Thanks!

Just Looking My kids loved it. I never heard of it; Paula Deen was the first time I heard of it. You can mix candy pieces in too, like snickers.
