Is it necessary to add the sugar? Doesn't it have its own natural sugar?

Unless you're working with the juice concentrated, which would mean using lots of passion fruit to make the juice, once you add water, you barely taste any sugar in it. You can work without if you'd prefer, or use honey as a healthier source of sweetener. I hope that helps.
