This method works like charm, i have been using it for a while. Few points to note - 1. Dont use thick photo papers for this method, the thinner and lower the quality of photo paper, the better are the results. 2. Note that not all nail polish removers are acetone based. Check this when you purchase. 4. Do not pour too much acetone on the copper board, just a thin layer to conver the entire board. 5. Also, do not pour too much acetone above the paper. 6. You can apply very light pressure once the paper is sticked to the board. Applying too much pressure will spread and widen the tracks. 7. Do not immediately remove the paper once the paper is sticked. Wait for until the all the acetone has evaporated, you can feel this by touching the paper above and it will feel cold. 8. You may need to experiment for a while before you actually start getting good results.

Last time I did a hand made PCB with toner, I printed on vinyl sticker material and used cheap laminator machine to do the transfer. Results were pretty darn good.

Note that the nail polisher does not have to be perfectly based on acetone, so you might see some impurities and additives building up into the PCB

You can use Ammoniumpersulphate instead of ferrochloride. Used to make pcbs like this until five years ago, but then I discovered JLCPCB have made like 15 boards by now! I often need vias and smd ICs nowadays so professional pcbs are a must.

Etching Marker suggestion for India - Use Kores Smoothline Permanent markers (thick tip), it is very etch-resistant. Don't use - Flair CD Marker, Artline CD Marker (worst of all, water-soluble).

Better still, will acetone work better? Also a quick soak of blank PCB in vinegar will clean copper. Then wipe with acetone and finally isopropyl alcohol, or methylated spirits will do. Then do your processes. Ammonium persulphate solution (at at least 70 dec C) is nicer to use than ferric chloride, and can be stored and reused multiple times. Use (an old!) electric frying pan with a ceramic dish in it. I made a rocking platform and a 2-3 minute etch, in a clear solution is much easier.

For anyone still wondering about this question, the board is an fr4 glassfiber based board that isn’t conductive with a very thin layer of copper on top of it, this process works by covering the parts of copper that you want to be come traces with ink or toner and etching the rest with chemicals.
