How To Get Respect Without Being A Bully - Jordan Peterson
goo.gl/DLouoh
Jordan Peterson recently expertly handled a debate during an interview with BBC's Channel 4 news (The video was called: Jordan Peterson debate on the gender pay gap, campus protests and postmodernism). And JBP did it without being a bull or being aggressive. So how do we get respect without being a bully? Well, we often think that getting respect and being aggressive go hand in hand. Because unfortunately, it’s often the bully that gets the most respect in the schoolyard and even in the workplace. But Jordan Peterson is an exemplar of a different way to generate massive amount of respect. So in this video we’re going to explore 3 main things he does that force people to respect you WITHOUT being a bully.
Now, we focused a lot on respect in this video but that's actually just one out of four emotions that are going to create an amazing first impression on anyone cross-culturally. Now, if you're curious with the other three emotions that you want to create in that person are to make an amazing first impression, I made a video on that that breaks down what those four emotions are so that you can start using them today to consistently make killer first impressions.
0:30 Jordan Peterson calls it "pacing your reality"
4:50 Jordan Peterson tells stories effectively
6:54 Jordan Peterson uses archetypal stories

Manipulating people like this isn't always the best strategy. Usually it's something very clear like: I heard what you said (restate it), however, here's what I need, here's how you can benefit, you do a, b, c very well, it's been 5 minutes, hope [insert childs or spouse name] is doing well... oh... gotta run.

I met Jordan Peterson. It was brief, unexpected and unrehearsed. It was in the middle of the week in the middle of the day in a common area of TGH. I was in a very elevated state of anxiety at the time. My condition would be obvious to someone like him, but for me, from the moment we shook hands I felt the immediate change in my demeaner. An immediate calming down, foot off the gas, take a moment to breath type of change. The type of antidote a guy like Jordan Peterson is very good at administering. It felt real and it felt sincere. Like he took the weight from my shoulders and carried it away. Apparently it was noticeable 'cause when I went back upstairs to my son's room I had quite the glow on. I was asked "why so happy all of a sudden?". I met Jordan Peterson.

Just to be clear, not everyone has something important to teach you. But act that way. People try to pin JP down on that one all the time. It's just a concession that you don't know everything.

Well, everyone has something, positive, negative, as examples that one can learn from. Every person, no matter their intelligence or education or life's circumstances was made as an individual.... with no one on earth being 100% identical. Every person has value.... maybe some contribute to mankind more than others, but there is a takeaway, large or miniscule from everyone. Hard to remember that sometimes for me as I let other things become more important than people sometimes. I need to be cognizant of that always. Have a good one, friends.

Unless you just like beating people over the head with your unaddressed self-righteousness which is unhealthy to you and annoying to others). It may have something to do with people identify too much with their opinions. With the demise of many social institutions in many people’s lives. - religion, the local community, ethnic identification even their family - people form their sense of self around their opinions and become very emotional in defending them. Little realising that they’re going to at least modify their opinions throughout their lives through experience and learning if they are a person open to change. There is nothing sadder than someone in their 50s and 60s with the same opinions as they had in their 20s.

@Charismaoncommand
@Charismaoncommand 6 жыл бұрын
That "down time" you spend thinking in a debate likely seems much longer to you (in your own head) than to anyone else. So don't force yourself to answer immediately - you're better off with a 5 second pause that lets you collect yourself than immediately jumping into a rambling response. If you've ever watched Elliott Hulse speak on camera (we have a video on him) he does an excellent job of allowing these breaks. If done right, without filler words, this time you take to collect your thoughts actually captures more attention because of the pregnant pause

Embrace the speed of your thought processes. Generally speaking, taking time actually makes for a more well-rounded response that shows you grappled with the topic, and not just saying the first thing off the top. If you pace your delivery (pausing to give people time to digest your words) as well as your thought process, you come across as someone who is knowledgeable as opposed to slow. Because you own the pauses, people will naturally listen more closely and take what you're saying on board. Chances are you're not as slow to respond as you think anyway - just look at the number of commas I used typing this lol

I GET ANNOYED WHEN PEOPLE WANT TO POINT TO SOMETHING THEY HEARD OR SAW IN A MOVIE AS A REFERENCE ..MAYBE I DIDN'T SEE THAT MOVIE ! OR IF I MIGHT HAVE, JUST NEVER GAVE IT ANY REAL THOUGHT OR ATTENTION !! I WOULD RATHER READ A GOOD BOOK WELL WRITTEN ..AND GET MY INFORMATION, INSPIRATION , IDEAS , THOUGHTS ON " THINGS " FROM THAT AS APPOSED TO A "MOVIE" !? I THINK OF MOVIES AS MORE OF , IT WAS ENTERTAINING ,FUNNY, SCARY , SAD , INTERESTING, STRANGE , DIFFERENT, BORING , BAD , POORLY MADE , ON VERY RARE OCCASIONS WOULD I REMEMBER ANYTHING FROM A MOVIE AS IMPORTANT , UNLESS IT WOULD BE A DOCUMENTARY ..A TEACHING MOVIE , HISTORICAL , "IF" AND ONLY "IF" IT WAS ACCURATE !! I JUST DO NOT HOLD MOVIES IN HIGH ESTEEM ! AND I HATE TO WATCH A MOVIE MORE THEN ONCE .. MY RECALL IS VERY GOOD ! SO I DON'T WANT TO SIT THROUGH IT AGAIN !!! We are herd animals and relationships are one of the basic "life blood" for humans. That's why we care. And.... that said, the comment about the ages 20, 40, then 70 of how we react to others caring about us is totally accurate! I am the oldest I've ever been (obviously, still alive.... grin) and caring about other's perception of me and respect they give me is down to this in my life..... "Sure I'd prefer people to respect and like me as opposed to not.... but .... if not.... some will, some won't.... and life goes on." Blessings everyone. Have a good one.

I'm commenting before watching the video, which is wrong but here we go: If you don't respect yourself, like true respect from the bottom of your heart, then nobody will. Maybe some will pretend they do, but that's all, no true respect. Here is the thing: love yourself, then you will respect yourself and others as a consequence. Then, you won't need others to show love or respect to you anymore. Another key point: respectable individuals will respect you. Assholes will disrespect you, no matter what. Peace.

TLDR: Pacing your listener's reality is tiring, especially if you have to talk to a lot of people who disagree with you the same way. It's been nearly a year since this video came out. Relative to the older clips seen in this video, what I observe in Jordan's recent conversations is that he hasn't been doing as good a job at point 1 here, pacing his questioner's reality. I think this is to be expected; he's become used to hearing the same story from the people who disagree with him, and is fatigued from pacing it in the same way every time, and so it's become his habit to spout off the phrase "corrupt patriarchal tyranny" and "marxist post-modernist" as shorthand. Even if he means a specific thing every time he uses that kind of shorthand, it can start to be seen as just a standard talking point and thus lose all its intended explanatory force. It takes a lot of effort to keep pacing your listener's reality.
@alma8508
@alma8508 5 жыл бұрын
Yes very true I noticed that also, especially in interviews where he's not given enough time to explain his point, or when the interviewer is particularly and consistently hostile and biased in their views, which gives Peterson no option but to resort to the common shorthand terms that you mentioned.

Thanks for the breakdown! Learned some great things. To address the first point: Peterson is an avid thinker and I'm not sure if he's consciously doing the "That's a good point" technique. I rather believe that to arrive at a conclusion he really believes in, he has this internal dialogue with himself, where he plays both sides of the argument. That also ties into the "you"s and hypotheticals that he uses, as these are his habits of discussing with himself. It's like a constant training for your brain to switch from perspective to perspective in an argument, which is now ingrained into him. That's how he's able to say "That's a good point" with conviction as it is something he has seriously considered before judging.

Han Jou, Well, it's not difficult when you know what you know. But things I heard from Peterson so far (capitalism as a good efficient system, veganism as cult, and he being "a believer") are wrong, I can't believe people change their mind to *that* kind of thinking/ideas/interpretations... He is a good speaker, maybe born maybe learnt, but he is wrong (on the subjects I heard him talk).

If the person when done talking suddenly wants to do something else, he or she is either a narcissist or has ADHD disorder. In that case you won't be able to talk rationally to them. Interesting.... cause I don't think I've ever seen Peterson do 1 or 2, in fact I've only even seen him admit the POSSIBILITY that he MIGHT HAVE been wrong about something once, and within days he was back to making that same argument as if that never happened.... and 3? Well, I would argue that's only respectable if the movement you're leading is respectable. Hell, Adolf Hitler "lead by example in a difficult situation." When the people looking to him as a leader are incels and domestic terrorists, I'm gonna go ahead and say that's not worthy of respect.
