Hello My Friend. How are you? I'm happy to report after 2 trays of the saddest biscuits ever.I tried a third tray I followed your video to everything you said ,and every move you made. I stopped the video if I missed a step ,and rewind the video. I placed the biscuits in the oven,and set the timer on the stove. Suddenly a Bing! I opened the oven door,and I knew this was it. I took them out ,and waited,for them to cool down. The look.The smell was amazing. As I lifted them ,and put them in a rubber container except,for one. I pulled the biscuits apart,and put butter on it. I can not tell you how good that biscuit was. I was ,so proud of myself. I know mom was in the kitchen too. I'm,so grateful to you. Thank you.

I love a biscuit with a bit of honey butter, delicious. I'm almost 60 years old and I've just started on my journey to make biscuits and make them well, I'm definitely going to try this recipe. My husbands mom comes from Arkansas, though she grew up in California she made biscuits his whole life, then he married me and I crack open a tube of Pillsbury biscuits, yeah they're definitely not the same. Hoping I'll be able to make something that looks as good as yours. Thanks for sharing your recipe.

That is awesome! What a great project for you to tackle! Your husband will be so happy once you master biscuit-making. Please be patient with yourself! Even those of us who were born and raised in the south seldom get biscuit-making right at first. It takes some trial and error to get the hang of how the dough is supposed to look and feel, how hot the oven needs to be, the best place to bake the biscuits in your particular oven, and how long to bake them for. It might sound strange, but there also really is a difference in the kind of flour you use! I hate that Daily Bread flour isn't available all over the place unless you order online, but I know there are plenty of decent flours for making biscuits. I just don't know from experience with those other flours which ones I would recommend. Again, it will just be trial and error, so hang in there and you will get it and they will be your OWN delicious biscuit recipe!

My husband grew up in the country in the middle of the state of Kansas and his school lunches consisted of a biscuit unless they had chili or sloppy joes. He hated the biscuits and he was made to clean his plate so he put the biscuit in his pocket and many times his mother washed them. I like the flaky biscuits that Pillsbury sells.

I hope they turn out great for you! If they aren't perfect the first time, don't get discouraged. It can take a time or two to just get a feel for the dough and the right temperature for your oven. I usually bake mine at 475.

This reminds me of my grandma... I stayed with her during the summers when I was out for summer break. Some of the earliest memories were of her cooking biscuits and Karo syrup. She is no longer with us. Miss her so much. Made me cry. I never learned how to make them. So this was lost to me. My aunts biscuits weren't like my grandma's. This is exactly how I remember her making them. Except with lard. She used it a lot. Thank you for teaching me. Now I will have to buy the flour and other stuff to make them. Thank you!

I love seeing this! A lot of folks have said seeing this biscuit video reminded them of their mothers or grandmothers. I hope you do make these and that you let me know how they turn out. If they aren't just right the first time, don't give up! It can take making them a few times to get a feel for the dough consistency and the heat of your oven. Also, some self-rising flours may be more to your liking than others!

These biscuits look delicious. My mother taught me how to make biscuits when I was a little girl. I always used self rising flour and lard or butter and milk or buttermilk. I would always roll my dough a little thicker than cut out the biscuits. They always came out great. If we had biscuits left over we would eat them cold. They were eventually gone. I will try the parchment paper.thank you.

I make my biscuits using self rising flour and butter flavored Crisco and buttermilk. I pat them out and I like smaller biscuits I have a tomato paste can that I cut both ends out and cut my biscuits out with it and bake them at 450° oven in a spayed glass pie dish and place my biscuits touching then they stand up straight and tall. I don't like real crunchy bottoms I like them on the soft side and love them with butter and honey. I live alone so I make them once or twice a week and store the leftovers in a zip lock bag and warm some up for my breakfast every day untill they are gone.

Do you not end up with too much flour and dry biscuits if you scoop the flour, since it packs down the flour? I spoon the flour into the measuring cup and then level it off at the top. Also, I learned that cutting biscuits with a glass and twisting tends to compress the dough and can make for more dry, less fluffy biscuits. Not trying to be critical or judgy or anything. I just want people to know this in case, like me, they have dry biscuits and can't figure out why. I absolutely learned some good info from your video and it really helps me improve my cooking when I can pick up tips and ideas from others. Things tend to stick with me better if I understand the hows and whys, so your tip about baking biscuits at a higher temperature rather than a longer amount of time is extremely helpful. It makes sense because ovens get hotter and dryer the longer they're on, hence so does the food you're baking in the oven. That's kinda basically what baking is. Cooking with heated air. I’ve never had an issue with dry biscuits or biscuits that are too dense. But then again, I’m not really packing the flour in there. I’m just lightly grabbing a scoop of it and flattening it as I bring it out of the canister. I don’t use a glass for cutting biscuits. I either use my biscuit cutters, or I use my hands to shape them.

I looked at the Women’s Weekly basic scone recipes and it had only 15g butter (about a tablespoon I think) versus 8 tablespoons in a stick. I would prefer this recipe.

Love this simple recipe! Tried it, they actually rose!! Lol. I'm lactose intolerant used non dairy butter and milk. Only thing I'd tweak is add a pinch of salt - presume butter had less salt than ordinary. Apart from that they came out yummy. Had with lime marmalade ;). Thanks again from London, UK x

Self-rising flour in the USA already has salt so I’ve never added salt to biscuits. Also, I use salted butter, although a lot of folks use unsalted. I never even buy unsalted butter for anything. I don’t mind a tiny bit more salt at all! 😁 I’m so glad you enjoyed this recipe and found a way to make it your own! ❤️

I was raised in the country and biscuits were always on the table. Your recipe sounds great! I have eaten a lot of different types of biscuits and must say I have yet to eat a bad one except some I made with all purpose flour. I forgot to add baking powder.

Thank you so much sweetie! I’m a 72 yr old lady who started cooking at age of 8 standing on a orange crate to reach the counter and the stove and cabinets! My momma worked and I watched my 3 siblings and after watching momma many times decided I would try to help her cook! My 1st biscuits were hard as rocks and what they called cat heads ! But I kept trying and I’d cook beans and biscuits or cornbread and I’d try different things until I got it right ! By the age of 9 I was pretty good and could put together a full meal for our family and it helped my momma out a lot also! I learned cooking in cast iron and still love it today ! I have cast iron from my momma, my great aunt and several pieces I’ve bought myself over the years! Sweetie your page does a giant service to home cooks of all ages from the young to us older folks who know how to cook but always enjoy learning different ways to make our beloved foods like biscuits and home canned jam and jelly! I know so many young women weren’t raised with the opportunities that I’ve had, coming from a more traditional family where all the women are good cooks and have always taken a lot of pride in making delicious food for their families. These days so many young women were raised by mothers who had to be busy working outside the home and did a lot of convenience foods, or perhaps their families have moved around the country and missed out on being near grandma to hang out with her in her kitchen. They have lost touch with traditional recipes and cooking styles so they are just having to figure things out on their own. I’m happy to share whatever I know that might help them.

Nice!!! All I’ll also say is when it rains it pours! From yesterday this is my fourth biscuit making video. 98% of the videos I saw said use self riding flour! You mentioned something’s that no body else said; do not knead and use middle of the oven and why! I think I’ll try your recipe! Thank you!

Your biscuitslook great. My papa use to make biscuits every Sunday. Well he made them Saturday night. Let them rise all night and baked them Sunday. They were huge about twice the roundness of your. And about 4 or 5 inches high. I have been looking for a great recipe. For quick biscuits. I chose yours. They are great. Your rule was his rule. Don't knead and don't over work. Thank you

@@OldTimeKnowledge I typically use White Lily. And I learned from a lady that made 600 biscuits a day that would sell out before the breakfast period was over. She taught me never knead the dough! I've thought of cake flour but my husband couldn't stand biscuits growing up until he met this big city/small town country girl and now his favorite meal is biscuits and gravy

I was so happy to see someone make biscuits with regular milk. I never use buttermilk. We only have skim milk in the refrigerator and I don't care for the "add vinegar" trick. So, I use what I have. I have white lily self rising flour (which I sift) and crisco shortening for my biscuit ingredients. I sometimes add a spoonful of sugar to help the biscuits get a little more golden color. Your advice to get a "hot" oven is also a great tip. It helps make the steam to puff the biscuits fluffy inside, too. We have our biscuits with butter and honey, split for various breakfast sandwiches, and for sausage gravy, of course!

I make mine with heavy cream and self rising flour. I press out the dough then fold it over on itself several times. You are right..no kneading. I place them touching in the pan and they turn out lovely. I have been cooking at 350 so thanks for the tip on cooking them at a hotter temp. Yours are beautiful

I hope they turn out great for you! If they aren't perfect the first time, don't get discouraged! Sometimes you just need to get a feel for the dough and how the heat of your oven is baking the biscuits.

You make your biscuits like I do, I use a large fork and parchment paper I also use a little more than 1/4 stick of butter to my two cups of flour. I do use all purpose flour though because I must watch my salt. Even so I will use self rising if that's all I have at the time. I love ❤ your biscuit bowl and wish I could have tasted your bread! Thank you for the recipe. I made three batches this morning. Very easy recipe however, my biscuits didn’t rise as much as yours did. I don’t know why…I didn’t mess with the dough a bunch at all and used cold butter I’m just not sure why they didn’t rise as much. Taste is there so we enjoyed them! Are used gold medal self rising flour because that is what was available.

Hmm… it may be the flour. Did you only get about six or seven (or at most 8) biscuits out of this? If you got more than that then it may just be that you pressed your dough out more to make more biscuits. Also, the baking powder might not have been as active in that batch of flour. Of course it might also be the wheat that they use for that particular brand of flour. The fact that you got good tasting biscuits is really the most important thing!

Thank you for a great video! Very nice demonstration of making biscuits. I haven't tried self-rising flour, but I'm going to look for the Daily Bread brand. i prefer sweet milk biscuits, and most of the recipes I see on You Tube use buttermilk. I like them too, but my mother always made sweet milk biscuits, and they are my favorite.

Absolutely! I use regular milk in this video. 🙂 Regular milk is what folks in my grandparents generation used to refer to as “sweet milk” whereas the alternative was buttermilk or clabber.

Here in Scotland we add sugar and call them Scones, made the same way for hundreds of years and yes, the secret is to handle the dough as little as possible and put them into a HOT oven. Love your vids. , new subscriber.

@@OldTimeKnowledge, I have already watched as well as downloaded. The gravy video, I may try, but I make my grandmother's recipe, and it's totally the best I have ever had. She used bacon grease and 1 can of Milnot before adding in her milk to the desired thickness, seasoned to taste with salt and pepper. The best creamy gravy in the world!

It takes a little bit of getting a feel for the dough, the heat of the oven, and the color of the tops of the biscuits to know where you might want to adjust. P.S...I LOVE peach 🍑 jan in my biscuits, too! In fact we’ve nearly finished a jar of peach jam from St John’s Monastery in Goldendale Washington (from a recent trip). In my opinion, there’s nothing better on a biscuit than some Irish butter & peach jam.

My mom use to make biscuits all the time they never came out right they were small little crunchy biscuits she use to say one day I will make a good biscuit but I lost her at 18 years old I'm going to try this you really reminded me of her I subscribed can't wait for your next video

I know you did this 3years ago, but just came across my feed, I've never tried with just 3 ingredients. Ive done yeast biscuits called in our house angel biscuits, buttermilk biscuits and baking powder biscuits. They're all good, I'm gonna try this one though really like the simplicity of it. when I make biscuits at home everyone likes to butter them, put hard boiled eggs on them, then put country gravy on top with crumbled bacon. We do sausage gravy also.

Those biscuits look fantastic… I have been experimenting with biscuits, when using self rising flour butter and whole milk, they turned out great, except when making breakfast biscuits, with bacon, or ham and eggs, they had a tendency to crumble and fall apart, so I started adding 2 egg whites whipped into the milk, with 3 cups of flour… that solved the crumbling problem without effecting the taste of biscuits…. Oh, and I use a cast iron skillet, it makes a difference.

I’ve never tried using egg whites in biscuits before but I might try that sometime. Normally if I know I’m going to be putting meats inside of biscuits I just knead the dough a little bit. Do you know how in this video I talk about not kneading? I found that if I work the dough a little more it results in biscuits that aren’t as fluffy, but they do tend to hold together better. I certainly wouldn’t object to putting egg whites in biscuits though and if they result in being fluffy AND holding together, then that sounds great to me!

It's an old hand-carved tupelo bread bowl. They're traditional here in eastern North Carolina, but it's hard to find them these days. This one was a gift years ago from my Mama. :)

I have yet to try these with jam or cream, but I have had a version of these that uses cinnamon and brown sugar. I think it's so interesting how our Southern American version of biscuits is basically the same thing as British and Australian scones.

I love the bread bowl! Around here, most people like White Lily flour for biscuits and cakes. I've never seen Daily Bread in the stores. I love fluffy biscuits and cakelike cornbread, but my Dad insisted on thin biscuits and unsweetened cornbread (he ruled the roost). We had one or the other every day and I had to make them. He would take cane syrup and margarine and stir it together to go on his biscuits. My husband and I like strawberry or blueberry preserves best on them.

The mill that produces Daily Bread flour was originally founded in 1736 about 20 or so miles from where my family is from (going back centuries), grinding corn meal - a big staple product in these parts. In time, they also provided wheat flour. Once self-rising flour became a thing in the mid-1800s, they started offering that and it has remained a popular brand around here even though they have moved to the western part of the state. The bread bowls are also something that is a traditional art here in eastern North Carolina, although sadly, I don't know anyone who makes them anymore. I bought a bowl like this from Lehmans Amish catalog years ago. They probably still make them, they're made from tupelo (spelling?) wood found in the Mississippi River.

Hello I have a great easy recipe and it's 3 cups of flour 1 cup of cream and 1 cup of lemonade for a sweet biscuit or mineral water for a plain biscuit mix all together cut and bake works every time. A chef gave me the recipe Cheers

You are most welcome! ❤️ I really don't make biscuits with buttermilk very often. This is how my mama's side of the family has always made them so that is what I've almost aways done. My grandmother's on my dad's side of the family have always used buttermilk, though, so I do make them that way every once in a while. The taste is just every so slightly different. 🙂

You can make buttermilk yourself. Pour some milk in a glass. Put a tablespoon of vinegar in the milk. Let it set. It will turn into Buttermilk.

I can relate because I used to do this too! 😄 Back in the day, I always used to wonder why my biscuits never seemed to bake up right, and they would be too crunchy on the outside when they were done. I just didn’t have the oven hot enough! One of my aunt’s is the one who told me what I was likely doing wrong, and sure enough, that was it!

I haven't made biscuits in more than 20 years, I think I might give it another try. My mother in law use to make the best biscuits. I like mine with Watermelon preserves which I make every year.

My husband doesn't like canned biscuits. And I'm proud to say that I actually make mine this same way! His favorite way to enjoy them is in a Sausage and gravy breakfast casserole!

Oh wow! Sausage and gravy breakfast casserole sounds great! How does that work? I know how to make biscuits and gravy. Do you just make the biscuits and then cover them in gravy and bake them in the oven? I am intrigued!!!

You are most welcome! 🙏 Traditional biscuits are a very simple recipe. And if you make them and they don’t turn out quite right the first time, then try again! It takes practice for most of us to get them just right because everyone has their favorite texture or use for biscuits. 🙂

These look very do-able. My husband and I moved to Australia a few years ago and no one here understands what a biscuit is! That's what they call cookies here. Regardless of who I've asked, they have no idea what a biscuit is so they definitely don't know how to make them. Thank goodness I can use your recipe to make them!

In Australia we would call these ‘scones’ we serve them with jam and cream on both top and bottom, a bit like an open sandwich

Lucy Roark : Only called biscuits jnUSA. The rest of the world calls them SCONES, as we do in South Africa.
