The last track I worked on I wanted to get a kick similar to hardcore/early hardstyle kicks but with that hard techno feel, something like MadDog - Verzerung. I can’t stress enough how good DS Kick is for those initial samples, I used one to get the thump and punch of the kick and a second one which is a copy with a lot of decay and attack to get that bass that kinda hits after the kick but is still a part of it. Process them individually with EQ, and on group use a lot of distortion and saturation, I use multiple Saturn 2’s with different settings, I recommend resampling before this phase, both layers. Then it’s EQ’ing, massive amounts of sat/distortion again, filtering, limiting, resampling… and a little bit of compression, maybe around 10-30%, when you hear it, back off. Again just resample it, at this point I have a pretty fat strong kick, but it lacks mids and highs, while lows are super good, now comes paralell processing, split in 3 bands, I use EQ3, and distort the hell out of mids, which also include the highs but filtered a bit, separate processing for highs to add the electric buzz sound and play with volume, here I don’t touch the lows. The resulting kick is smacking really good, at this point you can EQ some more to get rid of nasty frequencies, and slight shaping of the click punch. Again, a tiny bit of compression to glue it together. After this you can resample and get a full 1/4 sample of kick and bass, which I sequence in audio for better control when doing 1/8 kicks with fades, stretching them, playing syncopated patterns etc… Final thing I made is a rack for “live FX” for my kick, which are 2-3 different high pass filters or eq’s, low boost, and an saturn2 instance to change the timbre. Kinda long post but I hope it helps someone, it takes a lot of time and practice, experimentation with different stuff to figure out a way to make what you want

*I love layering kicks but getting the combination to sound right is quite challenging. Great tutorial!*

I know right? such a fun stage of sound design, layering is so fun. Do you want to know my secret to glue the layers? ... Tons of fucking distortion xD I use Trash2

Phazeing is not a problem is you gonna go mono anyways. Smush them together with a softclipper. Never had any problems. Take it up right and you can layer almost everything.
