Plantain Karam Podi Fry is a flavorful South Indian dish made with raw bananas (plantains) and spiced with a special karam podi (spicy powder). Here’s a simple recipe to make it at home.
Ingredients:
• 2 raw plantains (peeled and sliced into thin rounds)
• 2 tbsp oil (preferably gingelly or peanut oil)
• ½ tsp mustard seeds
• ½ tsp cumin seeds
• 1 sprig curry leaves
• ¼ tsp turmeric powder
• Salt to taste
For Karam Podi (Spicy Powder):
• 2 tbsp dry red chilies
• 1 tbsp coriander seeds
• 1 tbsp chana dal (split chickpeas)
• 1 tbsp urad dal (black gram dal)
• 1 tsp sesame seeds
• ½ tsp cumin seeds
• ½ tsp black peppercorns
• 1 pinch hing (asafoetida)
• Salt to taste
Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare Karam Podi
1. Dry roast red chilies, coriander seeds, chana dal, urad dal, sesame seeds, cumin seeds, black peppercorns, and hing in a pan until golden and aromatic.
2. Allow to cool and grind into a coarse powder with salt. Set aside.
Step 2: Fry the Plantains
1. Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Let them splutter.
2. Add curry leaves and sauté for a few seconds.
3. Add sliced plantains, turmeric, and salt. Toss well.
4. Cover and cook on low-medium heat, stirring occasionally until the plantains turn golden and crispy.
5. Once cooked, sprinkle 1-2 tbsp of karam podi and mix well.
6. Cook for another 2 minutes on low heat, allowing the flavors to blend.
Serving Suggestion:
Serve hot as a side dish with rice and sambar, rasam, or curd rice. Enjoy the spicy, crispy goodness!
