I'm 78 years old and remember my grandmother making this for us. She called it "poor man's candy." I like it as much now as I did then. 😊

My grandmother and I used to make potato candy, although we varied the recipe, often adding coconut and ground pecans or walnuts. We also enrobed them in dark chocolate.

This is exactly what my mother made but she took the recipe with her to the grave in 1977. I spent years trying to figure out how she made the dough as she never let us watch that part, just the rolling and cutting. Think she figured we wouldn't eat it if we saw it was mashed potatoes! I saw a recipe for potato candy but instead of rolling flat and using peanut butter it called for rolling into balls then dipping in chocolate. I thought this had to be it and after my brother tasted it (more like cleaned the plate) he said "you found Mom's recipe! What is it?" I just smiled and said it was a secret. A few years ago I made it for a contest at the family reunion and won the prize for best dessert. Except for my aunts, everyone else thought I was kidding when I admitted it was mashed potatoes.

Thank you!! This (from what I can remember) is just like what my Grandma used to make. All these other recipes that I'm finding with corn syrup, egg whites tons of regular sugar, etc... etc.. just aren't right. I remember there being just a few ingredients and potato was one of 'em! Pretty sure you hit this on the head and now I have to pick up some peanut butter at the store and make some! :)

You won me over when you said you can’t never have too much peanut butter I am now subscribing 😂 Peanut butter is my air, my go to treat or snack is a teaspoon of plain peanut butter, my meal when nothing else sounds good is peanut butter sandwich. My family makes this candy and was looking for the recipe and I came across this video so thank you.

My Grandmother only boiled, dried the potatoes, add confectioner's sugar and then rolled it out and spread it with creamy JIF peanut butter. I'll always like hers best. I've tasted your type, and it's good but I think the milk and vanilla make the potato taste different and it becomes too smooth and I like to taste the potato alone with the peanut butter. Merry Christmas thanks for keeping old time recipes alive!

Mom also didn't need to chill roll. She buttered plate then chilled plated candy and had pretty swirls, just fine. Pure sugar. I'm guessing my Greats dropped use of the potato. Didn't call it potato roll, obviously and I was in my 30s at least before found out recipe traveled to other areas besides PA Dutch.

I think using powdered milk would work better since you're using sugar as the drying medium and maybe cocoa powder too with the liquid milk. I might start with Splenda then switch to the powdered sugar which is needed to preserve these. Maybe even adding honey, powdered milk and cocoa powder with the potato and vanilla for the base.

I just watched another potato candy video. The guy said to use just one whole potato, but right before mashing the potato, it looked like he had two potatoes. He wound up using 6 cups of powdered sugar, and he added milk. He had a lot of candy, but enough pb for just three candy rolls. It was funny, because his mom then made a couple of comments about the candy. I'd like to try this, but, man, would it be SWEET.

The dough looked a little bit dry and crumbly. Can you use less sugar to make it a little smoother? I know this was posted three years ago but can you tell me where I can buy a jar of peanut butter, a box of confectioners sugar and a potato for one dollar? I will shop there all the time.
@itsmeagain14365 жыл бұрын
Any grocery store should have the products. It's icing sugar or powdered sugar and any type of peanut butter. I have used chocolate peanut butter, Nutella, or honey roasted peanut butter. It all works great. Skip the milk. You don't need it.

Oh also I think but not sure but I think it would cost more that a dollar bc powdered sugar doesn't come cheap it itself is about three or four dollars if u don't have it already in the house which I don't bc I don't do a whole lot of baking and cooking. I don't mean sound ugly or rude just trying to help it might help someone if they are expecting everything will just cost a dollar in total or if u meant a dollar a piece then that's not true peanut butter is about two dollars powdered sugar is about three or four vanilla extract is about five the salt and potato might be the cheapest of them they might be a dollar or less plz don't get offended just trying to help😄
