Can you tell me what would happen if you didn’t copper tape the first level and you just put the flower in the glass and taped with one big tape what would happen do you know can you share?
@crystalrae10243 жыл бұрын
Love the design and method. Clicked on this because I have been finding four-leaf clovers and wanted to use them in my designs. For the copper patina, I use rubbing alcohol to get any lingering residue off the solder after I use the steel wool. Also using a wax polish and buffing it with a cotton rag has helped me in the past brighten up the copper.

Great tips!! I'm pretty sure I used alcohol the one time I had big success with it, will definitely start doing that again!

Hi, great video. How do you avoid condensation building up on the glass when you use the soldering iron? Thanks
@glassypatterns428911 ай бұрын
Hi! When I do this method I only use paste flux. Liquid and gel causes leakage and condensation. Also, when you burnish your foil it needs to be done really well. I use a kitchen scraper. 👍

love this tutorial! for the stained glass piece, what kind/thickness is the glass you sandwich the flower between? I really want to try this, but I can’t find glass thin enough so that it won’t stick out compared to the other glass in the panel
@sapmadar2 жыл бұрын
I wanted to know the same thing! the thickness of the glass..
@glassypatterns42892 жыл бұрын
Hi! Even with the thinnest glass, it will still be thicker than the rest of the stained glass. But you can only tell if you look at the back of the piece. I use framing glass, but have noticed that it varies in thickness. Since I get it free from a framing shop, I end up with a variety of glass that’s all different.
@beachbumberry Жыл бұрын
What glass thickness did you use for the soldered to stained glass? Very helpful video!

Your my first Thumbs up & Subscribe! No lie. lol . I recently started pressing flowers and thought I'd try doing my own floating glass frame. Your vid has an uber amount of great info!!! My question (and prob will have many more) is there a recommended glass thickness to use? Thanks
@glassypatterns42893 жыл бұрын
Oh my gosh, that means so much to me, thank you!! ❤️ For glass, I use framing glass (what you use in picture frames) from a local framing shop. It’s very thin, but I don’t know the official thickness of it. The important thing is to not get the the kind with an anti-reflective coating.

P.S. they will give you their glass scraps for free.

Quick question! When you did the stained glass drop with the flower why did you foil the pieces that held the flower individually, then foiled them with the wider tape? Can you just use the wider tape or does the smaller tape allow for a bigger gap? If so, how does that effect the rest of the pieces? Are they all still the same level?
@glassypatterns42892 жыл бұрын
I wanted the inside to be silver instead of copper and I did not have quarter-inch silver tape. I talk about it more in the video. :)

Thanks for this video and also the free glass tip! I’m really new at this and am taking a course now. Want to purchase a soldering iron and looked at the one you recommended, however, there was a comment that there’s a wattage problem when used in the US because it’s made in Japan. What do you think? Are there others that you have tried and could recommend? Thx

I have watched this video three times in hopes that I'm not missing the answer I'm looking for... and I don't think it's in the video, so here it goes: When you're setting flowers in one section of a multiple piece project, the thickness level is different on that flower segment, correct? Is there a way you ensure that it's level with the rest of the glass? Or do you have a preference in how to solder that piece with the rest (ie raised side outward facing?). I designed a little decorative stained glass frame for flowers, but I'm a bit confused if I need to establish the clear glass over the whole piece or if it would work just to layer the floral segment. (My design currently has regular stained glass as the backing as opposed to entirely clear layers.) Thanks in advance, and thank you SO MUCH for this video. It's so helpful, and was able to use the links you offered for supplies to get myself started. x

Nice job!! The one part I was hoping you'd go over is how you cleaned it after soldering to get all the Flux off. I've tried plated pieces before (butterflies & feathers) the one thing that seems to always happen is, Flux or water gets in between the glass and ruins the piece. I use paste Flux and very little. Do you just dry clean it or clean it with soapy water? Just wondering. Also, I've heard if you wax your piece PRIOR to using the copper patina, it will come out much shinier. Thank you for posting this video. I really appreciate all your details! :)
@glassypatterns42893 жыл бұрын
Great tip on the wax! I'll have to try that. For cleaning, make sure that you reeeeally scrape that foil onto the glass and make sure the glass is clean so that it has a good stick. Sometimes I even warm the glass up on a heating pad because that makes the foil stick better. I've never had a problem with moisture getting into the pieces and I wash with soap and water and then use flux remover for the final clean. :)

Are your flowers already dried? Or do you put them in freshly cut? Wouldn't they deteriorate or something if there's still moisture?

They are dried already. If you put them in fresh they’ll turn brown and they would be flat enough.

Great video, thanks for the info. New to soldering---wanting to focus on pressed flower art/jewelry. As I've watched a lot of videos on the stained glass process/soldering techniques I see some people mention putting the pieces in a pickle solution. Is this step not necessary when you have a spray flux remover like you have? Also, is a flux remover and a finishing polish different? Wanting to shine as much as possible but just wanting to make sure I don't duplicate steps if they are the same product.

Yes it's corkboard! I like it because it's cheap and the pins go into it easily. However, you have to store it flat or it'll get a little warped.
