@stout8529 Жыл бұрын
I guess if your playground is just blender, it might be a game changer. Otherwise it doesn’t offer anything special, unfortunately. As a professional character modeller and grooming artist i’m always looking out for new grooming tools cause the task is pretty complex. It doesn’t bring anything new to the table, tbh. Tools like xgen, ornatrix, yeti has been doing same stuff for 10 years by now… and then some.
@stout8529 Жыл бұрын
@@xanzuls something tells me that you are not familiar with neither xgen or the other tools I mentioned. Ofc you can display all the hair with full resolution in the viewport and groom interactively. Ofc there are many different ways to sim groom. Not gonna discuss this any further. Just learn how to use the tool and you’ll get it. All the tools I mentioned are quite fast, actually. Never experienced any serious lag or anything. Cumbersome is maybe your tool handling skills. The speed is one thing Blender tries to offer, but this is actually a disadvantage. Pro level grooming is very… very difficult task. One might even say it might be one of the most difficult task on the character/creature pipeline due to the complex nature of different hair and fur types, hairstyles and so on. Pretty much all animals have hugely different types of fur and one specimen can have about 10 different types and layers. Not a drag and drop task if you want to nail it. High level grooming requires a wide range of tool capabilities and techniques. Xgen might be THE most powerful in that regard. At least what is available to the public. If you are counting out Xgens SeEexp, you are missing at least half of the thing. And it tells me that the level you are working on is not the highest. In VFX the standard is damn high, Blender tools just won’t cut. And that separates the best from the rest. You just have to put in some serious manhours, otherwise the outcome is nothing special. And that’s what bothers me regarding Blender. It doesn’t take it seriously, just a toy to impress novices. Novices buy tiny addons and impose themselves as a cgi wizards. Yet, the work is just a lousy hackathon in strong majority of the cases. In games, the standard is not that high as in VFX. But there are more capable methods for UE grooming as well. We’ll see, where Blender can end up, but at the moment it’s not on the cutting edge yet, I’m afraid.

The video only demonstrates a small part of the model and it runs smoothly, but I want to know if it can also run smoothly when used to create a complete effect. Has it been improved in Blender 3.5? In previous versions, when the number of hairs was increased, it ran very slowly, and adjusting each parameter would make me wait. The old hair system had an advantage in speed.
@PabloVazquez Жыл бұрын
It's been improved greatly and continues to be improved in every release, thanks to more parts being done in generic/procedural ways and added multi-threading to more nodes. That being said, it can get slow in any system, at the end of the video Simon shows how to use a mask modifier in the mesh to preview a small part but in full detail.

thank you Simon, that's great, is there a way to use this kind of workflow for lower poly hair to use in game engines? Essentially, it would be great to have a similar hair creation workflow but optimized for game use.

Is there a possibility that Blender might be able to get the Hair Curve system to have a Geometry function like Bezier or Path Curves without having to rely on the tedious Geometry nodes? In other words, to be able to extrude from Hair Curves as one would a Bezier or Path curve using the Object Data Properties instead of Geometry nodes, while still retaining the grooming functionality of the Hair Curves system? I think that if there were any one node or node system that would make this truly effective, it would be to be able to align the extruded Hair Curves to the mesh to which the Empty was applied.
