It is amazing how useful a procedural shader can be! especially when you have a mesh too high res to uv unwrap.
In this tutorial, I will show you how to create a procedural dirt shader in cycles. No unwrapping needed!
Finish this scene with Part 2: • How to make Procedural...

Don't follow the audio, as the author does not mention a lot of things he does. Just follow visually. On slow motion at half speed. Also on 7:00 .. he starts to use "Ctrl+Shift+Click" very actively, make sure you have Node Wrangler add-on added in your blender, for this to work. This is a advanced tutorial, and beginners can get stuck at parts. Just follow visually, and you would get close to what the author has produced here. I thank the author for his efforts, but I suggest he sync 'what he is saying' to 'what he is doing', so it is easier for others to follow.

I don't think this is a tutorial for beginners who need to follow a video click-by-click... It's rather for intermediate users who already know the interface and workflow and just need a guidance for this specific subject.

Ok when I CTRL SHIFT CLICK it just plugs them all into a damn "viewer" node... his plug into each other... i dont get it

Wow I never would have thought to turn on slow-mo, a good way to combat the new trend of fast-talking Toots

Also, just pause on where he selects the colors on color ramp, the exact shades are important to get right. Just notice the RGB values and enter them manually on your side, so as your colors are perfectly identical. Believe me, I had to do this tutorial twice, because of the colors didn't match, and my final look was off by quite a bit. Also, the sun placement can't be identical, so you have to adjust it as soon as you add it (when author does, but doesn't adjust), so that you get some nice shadows. Don't worry about all the extra noise at that stage, because when you add the dirt texture finally towards the middle of this video, the extra noise will get adjusted. Also, at 14:55 , notice how he has inverted the bump node, don't forget that.

Here, I remade the dirt material .. every color and every value as 100% matching as shown in the video above. Took me 3 hours, save your time. And you are welcome. drive.google.com/open?id=1W9IPjk1iV5o1Jyy7tTC_AiONFKpCn6PI This is my blend file at the end of this part 1, the lighting is not perfect, but the dirt shader is exactly the same, you can check.

That's just gorgeous, but I would've preferred if it was non-destructive (in terms of geometry)!

Thank you. it just saved me hundreds of hours of hand painting things. I hope you will make more videos in the future they are extremely helpful. Is it possible to paint with these "materials" shader setups?

Just one question, are you keeping the shading flat on purpose or did you forget to apply the shading smootn?

Yeah this is very fast paced...I wish you would explain more what all those nodes did. No one would know how to use them really except to just copy which ones you used. Why am I using them to begin with...all the options and menus on mine are not set up like your it seems.

The "pointiness" node at 12:00 will not work yet in Eevee, as I was trying to adapt it using realtime rendering, it seemed important to precise it if any of you try :)

So I've started this in 2.79b, and displacement is now a vector - how would I get the noise texture to work correctly with this new vector displacement?
@MrMargaretScratcher

EDIT - use the Vector -> Displacement node and plug the colorRamp output into the 'Height'

I got to the part where you multiplied the two colorRamps together. My Multiply node does have a factor to set. Also my texture just turned to gray, looks great for something like basalt (sorry if I'm showing my ignorance of geology), but why isn't it brown? How do I make it brown?
