Brilliant, you use salt to conduct the heat across the rice instead of oil, and it flavours it a bit too! Nice move :)

I had no parboiled rice so used normal rice. Can confirm that it works!

Yes it works without a drop of oil..I used to do this process when I was in England 20 years back, with American rice. Try it

Was yours cooked on a gas range? I made some last night on my apartment electric stove, and it resulted in overcooked parboiled rice which barely increased from its original size.

Cast iron would work, but sometimes when the pan is hot, it may release oil from edges and salt will start to stick in that places , always make sure pan is completely dry.

Hi, I tried it with rose matta rice and it almost puffed well, i think i need to heat the salt little more.. but Is it normal for the salt to change color to brown as mine got changed?

Thank you for trying out, yes salt will change to brown color after using for long time. You can use that salt for baking on stove, but not for cooking.

No, it won't taste salty. Salt is used here basically to maintain/balance the heat/temperature and to cook the rice evenly...

I would have sworn that the Salt would melt with that intense heat..... Wow....seems to work very well, and the Puffed Rice gets a dose of Salt as well. Nice

Peanuts, chestnuts, quail eggs etc are often roasted in salt for equal heat distribution.

It says parboiled rice on the package. Look for that kind of rice. It's sold in supermarkets.

My rice didn't puff, it just browned. Was my heat not high enough? Does the rice have to be parboiled? In your video it just looks like raw, dry rice.

I read some other comments where you answered you can reuse the salt but only on the stove top and baking but not cooking, does that mean you can mix it into things like cake mix but can't use it to season food?

Those who doesn't have oven to bake things at home, at that time this salt is reused for baking on stove top, but NOT for seasoning intake foods.

It's parboiled raw rice. It's not preboiled rice and we don't cook before making puffed rice.

If you mix spices to raw rice,then it won't absorb any spice, after making puffed rice you candy add you flavors.

Thanks for trying out, i suggest you to use parboiled rice instead of normal rice, to get nice puffed rice.

As it is shown at home, it is prepared with salt, but it won't absorb any. Other alternative is sand ( outsiders prepare in that way )
