One thing I discovered is you can sprinkle a little baking soda onto the super glue and it instantly hardens the super glue and the result is like a super hard plastic you can grind or sand to a final desired shape if you want. You can paint over this too. I have used this technique for fixing cracked plastic parts. The only thing is you have to make layers of this because the powdered baking soda only penetrates about 1/16 inch deep into the uncured glue. If you need thick repair you have to do it in layers. Not a big deal because it hardens instantly. There is nothing better than catching fish on gear you have made by yourself. Nice work Victor. I have used a similar technique for fishing smallies on the Kankakee river. I have added split shots to add weight to weighted keeper hooks because each trip to the river needs different weight baits depending on the river current that day and as it changes throughout the day.

Hello i_fish, I really appreciate the video. I have been making jigs like this for about a year using the "Killer Jig" hooks and split shots. I would like to try the other brand (owner) also. I don't use the super glue (I'm cheap) and I have found that the powder coat holds them together just fine, I've never lost a head. Like you, however I lose many jigs to brush piles and tree limbs. Your video was my inspiration to start making my own jig heads. It's very therapeutic for me and has a great calming effect.Thanks again. God Bless.

Hey bud, hope all is well with you... So I'm sure you've noticed the gap of the #6, 9318 owner & the 1/64 trout magnet jig head are the same, yes? The owner is a bit longer but not really so much if it's poured in a 1/32 shad dart (trout magnet) head. I pour all my own stuff now and the shad dart is an awesome profile for me. I do still buy a few JDM jig heads but I promise if you start pouring your own you'll be really happy and it's cheap...✌💯🎣

Excellent. I might try this for bass fishing. My only concern is the weight balanced enough for proper tracking during a horizontal retrieve? I fear it would run sideways. I know they would be fine for vertical fishing.
@ifishcatfish
@ifishcatfish 4 жыл бұрын
yeah, i won't pretend to know how they track : ) I wouldn't use them for bass swimbaits. For jigging though.. don't matter vertical jigging or just pitching to the bank - i don't think tracking matters since u jerk and pause anyway. Definitely works for crappie jigging, i promise u that, but don't know about sophisticated swim action, i bet they would track funny

How do your soft plastic baits stay on without the small barb of lead coming off of the split shot? most jig heads and a small bump or barb that holds the bait on the jig head. do you have any issues with that?
@ifishcatfish

everyone does that differently. Some people hate the barbs. I crazy glue my trout magnets because i can catch 100 fish with one of them. But i don't use anything for swimbaits because i change them often.

This video is awesome! I always wanted to know how you make the jig heads. I think they look like gem stones. Very beautiful! This is the content why I am subscribed to your channel. I like best that you care about the fish and avoid unnecessary large barbed hooks. Until now I only made bigger jigs for pike and zander by casting the lead around the hook in a homemade silicone mold. I might show this process of mold making and lead casting in a video at some day. Now I also want to make jig hooks like yours. I usually do not loose any lures so I will never need 100 pcs but I still want to make my own with your method because they seem to be perfect. You said you do not bake them. What would baking be? Could you explain the process in a few sentences? I have no experience in powder coating but I am very interested. Have a nice day.

There is a word on the street that after you are done you literally put them in the oven for 30 mins in 250 degrees, or some bullsh like that. Sounds ridiculous to me. I ain't never putting jigs in the oven. I go through 100 in a month, in the heat of crappie season. Maybe more. I think i have had days where i lost 30. Crappie lives only around trees. I also make a weedless version of this jig, which will be another video, but the weedless jigs have poor hook up ratio and i dislike them. 100 jigs is nothing. I am sure your friends would gladly split with you

What size hooks for what weights of heads do you prefer? I prefer slightly bigger hooks than usually a premade jig is. 1/8 - #2 1/16 - #4 1/32 - #6 1/64 -#8 1/80 -#10 These seem to be typical. I'd like the #2 hook to be on as far as the 1/16 and #4 to be in as far as 1/64... I don't know how it affects the weight of the jig. To me the small hooks on the 64 & 80 oz are just asking for small sunfish and if your lucky, some Bluegill and Redear of a good size.

I have #6 and #8 matzuo sickle jig hooks. What's a good size split shot to start with using this technique? I currently have some water gremlin 735 #3/0 and 735 #BB. I have no idea what the weights of them are. The only scale I have is one used for reloading ammo that measures in grains. I can tell you that one of the #3/0 is 3.5 grains of that helps? U never know on any given day where the lowest price will be. I use both hooks, yes, the owner is too expansive to use around snags. Don't have link for splitshots but im sure u can find yourself. I'm going to have a go at jig fishing for crappie this year. I know very little about it. I bought 6/0 and 4/0 sickle hooks. I don't know what size split shot I should use with them though. What do you suggest?
@ifishcatfish
@ifishcatfish 4 жыл бұрын
i hope this is typo - 6/0 is way too big a hook for crappie. You need to make different sizes and see which one works for u. In general, the lighter the better, as it allows the lure to sink slowly. But light jig heads are difficult to throw. So you have to find your own sweet spot based on where u fish, what gear u use and other factors.
@traviswhitworth6506

@@ifishcatfish ok, so I meant #6 😬. I did buy some 4/0 when I meant to buy #4. I'm guessing the 4/0 will be too big as well. Newb mistake. So maybe start with 1/16 weight on the #6? Is there a range of weights you would suggest I make to experiment with?
@ifishcatfish
@ifishcatfish 4 жыл бұрын
if you make them yourself, you can make as many as you want. Make 5 of each and see how it goes. 1/16 is too heavy for me, unless i fish in over 20 feet of water, but again, that will depend on your conditions.

One thing I learned is dipping in white first will make the any color brighter, but requires 2 dips.
@ifishcatfish
@ifishcatfish 4 жыл бұрын
it looks like that but most colors have some white in them already.. You can add the white directly to your other color and dip only once if u prefer that color. Double dip makes the head too big. For bass jigs it doesn't matter, but if u want to make tiny jigs for trout magnet u cant make them too big..

@@ifishcatfish ok just trying to help. I dip 1/16 oz twice, but never tried smaller. You can dip the same color 5 times without white and it will never be as bright as the one with 2 dips and white first.

don't know about 'bright'... but i know it will be different if u prime it with white first.. I was just saying that if u don't want to do two coats u can mix the white with the coler u like..

im lazy too. I only make them in weights and sized that I don't have. If i already have a good JDM jig, i will use the JDM even if its more expensive. But sometimes i need a hook/weight combination that i dont have, and i will quickly make like a dozen of them..

my jigs are already expensive because i use good hooks. If i make profit, they will be ridiculously expensive. And i am so damn busy even without something like this.. U should buy the components and make u some. I am kind of smart but not handy. If i can do this anyone can do it.

Don't add the superglue. Instead clamp it then use a soldering iron to melt the lead sealing it

CORRECT! I have done some lead melting when i was in my 20s.. i was doing carp sinkers then.. I hated the whole experience real bad. Not for me. This method here is not gona work with a half ounce split shot obviously, so for bass jig heads you will still need molds. But I am happy i at least found a way to make my own for crappie fishing without warming, and getting the led liquid, then picking the garbage, then not pouring it right, when u open the mold u see it didn't fill the whole shape.. But for bass fishing there is plenty of quality jig heads on the market already, and no need to deal with this anyway

DO YOU KNOW WHY THEY DONT PAINT JIG HEADS IN JAPAN? BECAUSE THEY KNOW ITS NOT NECESSARY. THE FISH DONT CARE. MOST FISHING EQUIPMENT AND COLORS ARE MUCH MORE TO ATTRACT "US" THE CONSUMER THAN THE FISH. YOU PROVED IT YOURSELF WHEN YOU SAID "I LOVE THE COLORS OF MY JIGS." LOL
@ifishcatfish
@ifishcatfish 2 жыл бұрын
First of all, turn off caps. Second, nowhere in the video did i say u will catch more fish. So i don't know what you are upset about. Third, I have many painted jigs from Japan. Daiwa Gekkabijin jigs are mostly painted. Shimano Soare jigs are mostly painted. Decoy makes painted jigs. Cultiva makes painted jigs. I have a whole playlist with JDM jigs - go check some videos. I am still not saying that painted jigs catch more fish! But I enjoy when the lure and the jig head match, and other people enjoy it too, and what you need to learn is people fish for the pleasure, not for the fish, and if they enjoy painted jig heads, there isnothing wrong with painting them. And there are definitely PLENLY of painted japanese jig heads.
