I find that if you can remove a frame and reduce the number of bees by 30-50%, this relieves the pressure on a hive to swarm. So 2-3 frames for queen rearing is ideal. This also works for other boxes. Swarming pressure can be relieved with 30-50% reduction. And splits are the result.

What are the dimensions of the wood pieces that make up your new mating nucs? Would be great to have that info - each piece (length, width, height and how to assemble them)

I've found painting the advantech is a must. I'm in FL but even in GA I imagine you'll have the same issues. UV just breaks down the outside of it. I have boxes I painted looking brand new 3 yrs later. Great Idea. I'll be making some

i might try some 3 frame nucs this season. you are so rite about wax moth. they make a mess quick. i will be cutting up all the 10 frame boxes this week to make 5 frame nucs and now some 2 frames. great idea 💡!
@williwonka51067 жыл бұрын
Freeze your unused frames. It kills any pests and can be thawed to use later to give a hive a head-start. Freezing works for honey too. Save it for later when you need it.

This is a great idea... I had terrible trouble with my mini's. I'm going to make a bunch of these and give them a try. Should be much easier to manage. Thanks for sharing!

Barnyard Bees I was thinking the same thing. We have really bad winds here. The screw is a good idea. I'm excited to give these a try. I think they will work a whole lot better and be much more convenient.

A whole lot easier to use just a jar top cover.

Revolutionary. Using equipment everyone has. I can make adapters using frames with insulation to narrow down a 5 frame nuc… 👍👍👍👍😜🍾🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝

Then I can grow it out and put it in a 10 frame or 8 frame.

I like this idea.. I'm interested seeing how they work out.. what I did this last year was, I took regular deeps and using a router made grooves inside so I could fit 3 dividers creating 4, two frame nucs. For the entrances I made one hole per slot on seperate sides of the box. I liked it bec it's totally interchangeable with all my 10 frame deeps. There are a few kinks I need to work out this year. Feeding is a problem with my set up. I'm only running between 20 and 80 colonies so it's not as difficult to manage as someone with many more such as yourself.
@stuckinbabylon1868 жыл бұрын
Barnyard Bees I didn't have much of a drift problem and the boxes worked pretty well except feeding is a problem I need to work out. I painted each side a different color. I still get a bit worried to work the hives bec of them being so close. It wouldn't be very hard for a queen to walk rt over the dividers and into the colony Nextdoor when the lid is off but as long as I worked and only had one open at a time it was better and not much a worry. There are pluses and minuses to both. All n all It was pretty successful set up I may try your like yours to see how I'd like it.

Your on to something here..I hate screwing with those small frames..Think ill build some too. Thanks for the video.. Wonder if we take a 5 frame nuc and put a divider in it to narrow it down to a two frame..then move the spacer over and add a frame if it gets crowded..
@davidcassity65937 жыл бұрын
I've watched this several times. It's the best idea I've seen in beekeeping as far as supplying queens to increase my apiary. I'm building similar with room for 3 frames. I have only hobby time for bees. So there is time I can't get into hives regularly, that extra frame I may or not use.

Really helpful. I'm can easily convert one of my five frame nuc size swarm traps.
@jaysergent63835 жыл бұрын
That will work yes. I like to take a 10 fame box and divide it into 4 equal sections and put an entrance on each side. When I put the dividers in its a perfect fit for 4 2frame mating nucs. This has worked really well for me.

I'm going to try a variation of your idea. I'm devising a 5 frame into 2 2 frame nucs. I'll be adding queen cells, 1 drawn frame, and one empty. I am planning to shake all the bees into a tub so I get a good mix of ages and put them in the nuc with a measuring cup. How many cups of bees will I needs to staff the nuc? I was thinking 2, but I'm not at all sure.

When do they start making queen cells? And do they only make them in the lower box ?
@jaysergent63835 жыл бұрын
The bees don't actually build cells in this box. The most common way to use these is to introduce a capped queen cell. However, they will build cells from a frame of eggs if for some reason they lose their queen or you move her.
@jaysergent63835 жыл бұрын
And yes they only build in the lower box as the top box is feeder only

Many of the large scale breeders use artificial insemination but that's really expensive to get into. I'm not sure how it works but bastin honey farm.com has a complete setup that you could look at.
