@Paepercuts4 жыл бұрын

This is one of the most helpful tutorials for basing I have seen. It's very impressive! I dont know if its your style, but I feel like it could be a bit quicker. You explain what you are doing while showing footage of doing it and then linger on the shot for a while. This is helpful if the current step is tricky or not very clear, but if you are just doing something simple that added 5-10 seconds feels like I'm just waiting for you to get to the next bit. I appreciate that you are showing a more realistic idea of how long a process might take, but you could explain what you are doing, and then once you are done explaining maybe play the following footage sped up? 15:57 to 16:08 for example is just watching you gently poke away. We can see the important action pretty well and its simple so you could speed that footage up. When you add all the little pockets of time up from the video you could probably get 2 or 3 minutes of footage that could be sped up letting you improve flow and pacing without loosing the important detail.

Love your work man! Very inspiring. I made some of the matt medium solution..mine had quite a runny sediment at the bottom but yours looked a lot harder? Used exactly the same products in the recipe except I used bottled water? Not sure if that matters? Also, I am struggling to get kopi cones..they look very useful. Tried the exact Dutch product gardening website you seem to get a lot from. Can you point me in the right direction for these cones please? I'm in the UK... don't know if they do international shipping?..thanks for any help you can offer 👍
@Paepercuts6 жыл бұрын
Hi and thank you. If the solution is still runny that means it's not yet fully separated. I'd leave it untouched for at least a week, don't even lift it up to check that may cause it to mix again. As for the water that is o.k, i always recommend distilled water because in some countries tap water is not fully clean. For the Cones here is a link, it is in Belgium but i believe they will ship to the U.K. www.bloemschikmateriaal.be/en/decoration-material/natural-materials/wood-twigs-and-bark/cabstick--pepe-cone-150-gr-30-p-bleached Good luck and have fun, cheers.

Beautiful work, thanks so much for making this video! Why did you choose an oil wash for this specifically on the wood as opposed to regular acrylic wash? I usually use oil wash for metallics or anything like panel lines where capillary action is important, but rarely organic things like trees, so I was just curious.
@Paepercuts6 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I find oils work really well on natural wood. The colours from oils are more earthy, whereas acrylic washes tend to be a bit harsh and vibrant. I often apply 2-3 tones and remove some from the raised area with a sponge just like with panel lining ( outlines the cracks and texture of the bark ). The white spirit is slow drying and flows more even than acrylic medium and water will, downside is that they will leave a slight gloss that has to be varnished after, but i'd do that anyway. Cheers!

Hello papercuts my fellow neighbor. I discovered yoir channel a few days ago. And my oh my im stunned. The stuff you make is nothing but spectacular. The attention to detail is out of this worlds. I hope i can achieve such nice dioramas one day. And for that i have a question. Can you reccomend an airbrush set for me? I planning on getting one to help me produce better dioramas and miniatures. Realy would appreciate if you could reply. Hearthly greetings from germany.
@Paepercuts7 жыл бұрын
Hello my friend thank you i'm glad you like my work. The airbrush setup i use and highly recommend is: - Harder & Steenbeck Infinity CR Plus: www.airbrush-services-almere.nl/shopasa/contents/en-uk/d144.html#p2053 Excellent airbrush, especially if you plan on doing close up work on miniatures. You can get a 0,15 needle / nozzle for your mini's, and a 0,2 or 0,4 for larger work such as terrain and priming ( you always need a matching nozzle size for each needle size ) It's also German made so you'll have good access to spare parts and accessories which is handy. - Hansa HTC 20A Compressor: www.airbrush-services-almere.nl/shopasa/contents/en-uk/d41.html#p534 This one is a joy to work with, good capacity and it's so silent i thought it was broke when i got it ;-) - Also get a woven linen air hose with easy click mechanism (steeknippel) trust me, you don't want to use a plastic hose. No. 7 on this page: www.airbrush-services-almere.nl/shopasa/contents/en-uk/d34_01.html I've linked you from a very good airbrush store in The Netherlands to give you an idea. It's an investment, but i find with airbrushing quality is everything ( i started with the worst compressor in existence from China, when i put it on it started moving over the floor and was really loud haha ) Both the airbrush and the compressor come with 2 years warranty. I'd recommend buying a setup at a store that specializes in airbrushes, so you can ask them for advice and also go back if any problems arise. Hope that helped all the best!
@davidbarthel56647 жыл бұрын
Paepercuts you couldnt be a nicer person if you tried :-) i never expected such a detailed response. Also im suprised how cheap airbrushes of a good quality are. I work in a (lackiererei is the german word) paint shop is that the correct word? So im used to see price at around 800-1000€ for a spray gun ^^ anyway thank you for the great advice and taking the time for a reply. I wish you all the best in the world. Sicerly david

Before i forgett is it hard to get used to double action? I have not touched an airbrush since my apperenticeship. And that was 20 years ago
@Paepercuts7 жыл бұрын
It's really easy. All you need is a good responsive trigger on your airbrush, which the Infinity has. Some airbrush stores will let you try them out on a piece of paper so you can get a good feel for it. With your working experience i'm sure you'll pick it up in minutes. Good luck and have fun!

Thanks! Succes!

You can find them on Ebay look for '' 1/24 or 1/35 scale model White Flowers '' or check the RealityInScale website they sell them aswell. It's a Dutch website but maybe they ship to Italy. Good luck!

Really thank you, found em on ebay, can you pls explain how to give different color to them? just a wash of the needed color as u said? or maybe they need some other threatment?

Easiest is to lightly airbrush them if you have one. I show how to do it in my California Desert Base video around minute 18. You can also hold them upside down and dip them in a diluted wash/ ink and dry them with a hairdryer after to speed it up. They are preserved when you buy them, but note that if you leave them white they will -slightly- yellow but mine only did so after 3-4 years and i still use them. Good luck and have fun with them!

@Paepercuts7 жыл бұрын
Thanks!
@Ninovanderhaar7 жыл бұрын

Why do you use the various types of sand, tile glue etc. with great care if you then cover everything with the mixture of sawdust, soil and liquitex? Wouldn't it be enough to spread the dough on a pvc glue base?
@Paepercuts4 жыл бұрын
Technically you could do it without. I like to add more layers to make sure i cover everything, aswell as the mixture having a good grip on a rough surface like the sand will provide. Cheers.
@TheTechSultan4 жыл бұрын
Hi, Liked your video. have a question, isn't better to keep the ground mixture without coloring? won't that give the scenery more realistic view since most the materials you used is based on organic substances we find in Nature. or is it necessary to prime and color it? Thanks and stay safe.

You can let it stay in it's natural colors, however some natural products will discolor/ yellow ( earth, leaves etc. ) slightly over time just like in a real forest, especially when exposed to direct sunlight. In order to 'capture' a certain look like a dark/damp forest, you can paint it and it will retain that look how you like it. I'd encourage you to experience a little, make a few test samples and see what grabs your interest the most. Cheers and take cares!

Question do you plan on doing other kinds of scenery other then nature? Like maybe a battle field from WW1, WW2, a city or a maybe ruins either from a battle or some that might belong in a Fallout game/post apocalypse?
@Paepercuts7 жыл бұрын
Hi, well i kind of came from doing WW2 scale models/ figures/ dio's to doing more fantasy work. I'll look into it for future videos!

Cool and it can still be used in fantasy since, you mostly use either fantasy or 40k miniatures in your videos. I could imagine a diorama of a battlefield either WW1, WW2 or go even further back to previous wars or forward to other wars, could still be userble as either diorama or gaming bases. lest say that i want to make my gaming bases so that my Dark Eldar are fighting in a city, against an imperial army. Well those guys would still have alot of tanks, planes granades and other things to throw at them. So the city would basically be in ruins, with lots of rubles, ricochet marks and other such things. Or the battle could be during the the great crusade where the Iron Warriors where trying to take a planet, they basically fortified themselves like they did in WW1 before going after the target.

What does the pigment wash do differently than say an oil or acrylic wash? Any recommendations for a substitute? :)
@Paepercuts4 жыл бұрын
Hi, pigment washes dry very matt, almost dusty looking. So when making dry earth or desert sand for example it'll give a more natural earthy/ sandy look. You can use cheap pastel chalks and grind them into powder, and dilute that with water to get a very similar effect. Good luck and have fun!
