Reusable shopping bags are the green way to go. This tote bag is perfect for groceries or other shopping. The ones you buy from the grocery store tend to be pretty ugly and not that durable. By making your own, you can choose the fabric and they’re stronger than the store bought bags.
If you want to be able to machine wash your bags, cotton or cotton blends are good choices. I’ve also made a bag with outdoor fabric and an oilcloth lining. These materials shouldn’t be machine washed, but the outdoor fabric is water and stain resistant and the oilcloth is waterproof and easily wipes clean.

I like the bag, I'll give it a go. Just one query, is the stabiliser the fabric we call "iron on interfacing" in the UK?

Thank you for this tutorial- I’ve made two bags since yesterday for an upcoming bag ban in my state (both paper and plastic), and I used one today at Costco. The cart loader loved the bag- it was the perfect size! Came home and made the second one.I think I may make a few more sets for family members’ Christmas gifts.

Three years in and your excellent video made my day! I've been working hot and heavy on multiple quilting projects for friends and family the last few months. This bag is easy to make and the instructions are quite clear. It might be better to clarify 'wide' and 'long' measurements especially for people using directional fabric. The bag doesn't stand up on it's own when empty, unfortunately.

I made one of these a few years ago using canvas exterior and Ottercloth™️ interior. Now that VA charges for plastic bags I decided to make more. I finished one today and I think the next one I will cut one long piece for the interior so there’s no bottom seam in case something leaks. I have enough of the two fabrics to make some smaller ones as well. I love this tutorial and refer to it when I need to make a bag.

I made this bag. While making it I realized the video did not say whether the 20 inch side or 21 inch side is your top/bottom or sides. So when I added my stabilizer I had 3 1/2 inches on each side instead of four. I sewed with 21 from top to bottom and 20 inches wide.

Thank you very much for this wonderful tutorial. I am now making my third bag. I am making them to donate to our city’s Outreach for Ukraine project so they would have somewhere to put the supplies that we are also gathering for them. Because I had two yards, I was able to make three. I’d like to make more with a 1 yard cut of fabric and utilize it as much as possible. Could you please tell me what you recommend? I was hoping to cut it in half so that would leave me with 18 inches. I could make them wider, but they won’t be as tall because of the 18 inches. The other measurement is 42 inches, so the yard is 36 x 42. Also, what would you recommend for the boxed corners and the stabilizer size? I would appreciate your information. So would 18“ x 21“ be OK with the same stabilizer size and the same box corners? It would be a little less tall, but I think that would be OK. I would just prefer your professional opinion before I proceed. Thank you again!
@onlinefabricstore
@onlinefabricstore 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I'd keep all the other measurements the same, so with the 18" cut fabric height, the finished bag would be 13x13x7, which I think is still a great size. I like that the front and back would be square. I'm happy to hear that the bags are being using for such a good cause! So thank YOU and good luck!

I make them for Mpls Climate Change - we are Boomerang Bag Volunteers and they are donated to our grocery stores so that people who forget to bring their own reusable bag can have one. Mpls now charges $0.5 for bags. I would suggest serging, zigzagging, or using an overlock stitch on the sewn side seams and at the top before folding it over to make them sturdier and last through washings. Reinforce the seams both on the lining and the outerfabric.

Nice bag and great instruction. Next time consider showing a visual of the measurements (L x H x W) within the video . Although it is verbally noted, having a visual of the calculations is helpful for those of us who are visual learners (like me) and also for those who do not speak English.

Can you clarify what measure is “bottom” and which is “side” please. Wasn’t clear if the 20 inches or 21 inches is the “bottom”

Hi Melinda, Each 20 x 21 inch piece makes up half of the bag including the sides and bottom. There's a seam that runs down the middle of the narrower sides and bottom. You make gussets to form the corners. The finished size of this bag is 15″ tall, 13″ wide, and 7″ deep. I hope that helps! We also have written directions and photos which may be helpful in addition to the video: www.onlinefabricstore.net/makersmill/how-to-make-reusable-shopping-bags/

OnlineFabricStore.net thank you for responding so quickly. Didn’t exactly answer my question… But I did figure it out. Very first step is to put your pieces together and sew the “bottom” . My issue is that this is not a square it’s a rectangle. Which side is the bottom? I Realized that is the side that is 21 inches, not the side that is 20 inches long. Anyhow I just completed the bag and it is absolutely beautiful! I love it. Thank you so much.!
