I use plastic poster board - about $2 for a 22" x 28" sheet at Michaels. I cut it down into 12" widths and then cut it on "Stencil Film - 0.4 mm" (pressure 341). It's nice and sturdy. I don't use spray adhesive: either I hold the stencil down by hand or I use a low-tack tape like painter's tape. For a stencil you'll want to tile (say you're looking to create an overall effect on a wall), remember to add a couple of tiny circles in the corners to use as registration marks so everything lines up correctly.

I read somewhere that I could use my laminator to make craft plastic! Just tried it and it worked PERFECT and didn’t need to do more than one pass with my normal blade! I just passed a clear laminate sheet through the laminator to seal it and cut it as normal on the card stock setting. Such a great trick!!!!!

Thanks for sharing that. I’ve made a few stencils over the years with dies. I use 0.4mm Mylar. It’s the same thing that proprietary stencils are made of. It’s easy to use and very durable. 🌼 I don’t use adhesive either, I use the Wendy Vecchi Stay-tion. The magnets hold the stencil and paper down fast.

Great Tutorial... I used the same plastic stencil sheets (0.007) and used the same settings. however it did not cut all the way through for me. I had to force my Maker to cut twice. I initially just edited the 'transparency' material and later I ended up creating my custom material which I named Stencil 0.007 and used the same pressure as the Transparency but activated the multiple cuts option. I tried 4 times first (overkill) then down to 3 and 2 was good. Just throwing this out there in case anyone has the same issue as I did.

Thank you so for getting me through making a stencil. It makes big projects easier. I have one question though. When there letters with a centerpiece, i.e., O D A, how do you keep the inside within the stencil. I'm holding down the center of O, making a mess. The middle of the A is so small and the D is almost as difficult. Really appreciate your help. Genevieve
@MakersGonnaLearn4 жыл бұрын
Hello! So, this can be a tricky process! The best thing to do in our opinion is just to hold it down with the back of a paintbrush or something while you're stenciling.
@webwarren3 жыл бұрын
Stencil fonts usually have breaks in the cross bar of the A, or part of the O, D, P, R, Q, B to prevent "the inside" from slipping or falling out. There are two ways to fill in these breaks: one, to manually add them in once you've lifted the stenci; two, to make two almost-identical stencils with letter the breaks in different places. Use the first stencil to paint, marker, color, etc. your substrate. Lift the stencil and let everything dry. Then place the second stencil over the now-dry project, exposing the breaks in those letters, and color everything in (essentially, adding a second coat to most of the letters).

Do you spray the adhesive each time before use? And do you have you have to clean the adhesive off between uses?
@MakersGonnaLearn4 жыл бұрын
It's all personal preference. If you don't think it's very sticky, spray it again :) And you can clean the adhesive off between uses, or leave it on and just cover it with plastic wrap or some other type of protector sheet.
