Fabulous. This video is how I was taught to cook Sapusui, when I was in my mid 20s, (I am 70yrs this Sept); by the mother of a Samoan boyfriend. I am Palangi, and have been making Sapusui since the 1970s! Many Samoan friends & family have praised my chop sui, & tell them how I was taught to cook this by an expert. Loved this video & the Samoan garlic & ginger crusher. LOL.

Samoan mother's. How grateful I am for having a Samoan mother. Their strong love for their kids, husband and family shows in their food. Rich, fulfilling and an endless supply like a buffet 😅. Their dedication to their kids is pure love. I look back at what my mom has done for me and just thank the almighty father in heaven he chose her to be my queen to worship. I cannot comprehend another being in her place. Forever thankful for my samoan mom and all Samoan mom's.

It's a Samoan dish that basically you can add just about anything. You can use chicken, beef, or pork, which ever meat you want. I've tasted one with pisupo in it, and it's tastes great. Some like vegetables in their sapasui, which is also very tasty. There is no right or wrong way to make sapasui, there are many variations of this dish. But they're all very good. Thank you Aunty for sharing, wish I had smell-a-vision!!!

@sillau9

@@tesstickle6035 no,sapasui is not an Asian dish..it was influenced by Chinese when they came to Samoa,and Samoans made their own version of chop suey..so it's actually not an Asian dish..Sapasui is a Samoan dish that was Chinese influenced..not the same thing my my guy 🤦🏻‍♀️.
@ltmg9832
@ltmg9832 2 жыл бұрын
@@sillau9 ‘Influenced’: Meaning it’s a take from an original Asian dish. A spin off in which we now consider this as a staple of one of our Islander dishes to date. It’s not like we had a widespread of plantations of vermicelli, garlic and ginger being made and grown in the ancient times that happen to magically appear. If that was the case: then it wouldn’t be just be Samoa, this would mean all of the islands across the Pacific and we would’ve had a plethora of other dishes out of these ingredients and far more relatable dishes. But we don’t. It wouldn’t have, because of the adaptation and climate in our Pacific islands and they’re not traditional Polynesian crops. Those were brought on our shores by the Chinese and then continued to grow and distribute throughout the island. So it’s in the recent past century, that this was introduced because of the Chinese in Samoa and in other neighbouring island countries. Sapasui wasn’t just the only spin-off dishes influenced from them and carried on, however they are more popular in other island nations than in Samoa. So yeah…if it wasn’t for the Chinese coming to our shores. We wouldn’t have Sapasui as an island dish today.

Faafetai lava mo lenei recipe! I have read a few comments pointing out the lack of vegies. I grew up on Tongan Sapasui. Never had one without any vegetables in it but maybe that's where the two differ? A lot of cultures have some sort of variation of rice noodle stir fry. My mother would've seared the meat with matchstick carrots and celery. I remember always trying to get as many carrots as I could before getting smacked. 🤭 This looks good too! Best thing I love about Sapasui is how every aunty's Sapasui is different and good. Then I tried the Korean kind. Chap chae. Bigger noodles. Served cold. AWE Man! Never met a Sapasui I didn't like!

I was looking for some chopped up veggies as well. It's okay both ways, I've had them both styles (Tongan and Samoan) and prefer mine with veggies, it adds layers of flavor and doesn't compromise the sapasui flavor at all. To each their own and while her noodles are thicker than what I'm used to having, everyone makes it a little different. 🤤

I cook my chop suey with Brisket.. my favourite... i slow cook the brisket... before i start to slow cook the brisket, i prep onions, garlic, ginger thyme or basil and brown sugar.. but what i do is cut the brisket up with fat on into small pieces. Heat up pot on a low to medium heat.. add oil... meat, thyme or basil and brown sugar for 35 mins I add onions, garlic and ginger etc...

Thank you so much. Mine turned out really nice. Never as good as my Samoan Aunty. But it wasn't too bad. Thanks to you 💚

I'm Māori but my sister married a Samoan so since I was about 11 years old ive been eating Sapasui and only recently decided to learn how to cook it, Im almost there, I use 2 different types of Soy sauce, ginger, garlic, onion, mixed veg, chicken and beef, I also over season the meat with chicken & beef stock powder, garlic & ginger salt, but I needed to get the consistency and texture right and that dark brown colour which Im.prettt sure I'll get right after watching this.
