I started making dice about 3 months ago and realized rather quickly you absolutely need a pressure pot for casting clear dice. So I spent the $137 and was super excited however I then instantly found out you need to remove air from the molds aswell. So out of desperation to save $120 I threw a new set of molds in the pressure pot and it thankfully worked. Been doing it ever since and haven't had a single problem. Would definitely recommend as it's way easier than a vacuum chamber and much faster.

In regards to the point about not needing a vacuum chamber: If you cure Sorta-Clear silicone in a pressure pot, you will actually be able to see that some bubbles form and expand over time. I made a few molds out of the softer Sorta-Clear (18 I think) and over the course of a few days, bubbles started slowly expanding inside of the mold. I didn't have the same problem with harder silicone, like Sorta-Clear 37, but it could be an issue with the MoldStar silicone since it's also pretty soft. It seems like any inclusions in the like hair, dust, etc trap air and end up becoming bubbles that expand after the silicone is removed from pressure. I think the best tactic is actually to vacuum de-gas first to get the bulk of the air out, then pressurize. My biggest mistake was including pieces of already cured silicone. When I pour MoldStar molds, I always use cut up pieces of unusable molds, since the silicone bonds so well to itself, and it allows me to reuse silicone and reduce waste. This is fine in the vacuum, but in the pressure pot, it creates a TON of bubbles. I always do my MoldStar molds in the vacuum for this reason.
@Rybonator4 жыл бұрын
That's really good to know! I have been wondering about cutting up some of my old molds to save on some silicone. I'll be sure to keep this in mind. Thank you VGLauren :) You rock!
@VGlauren4 жыл бұрын
@@Rybonator It seems to work great with MoldStar, I have a box of cut up molds that I use whenever I pour it, and haven't had a problem with it. I think it might depend on the silicone - adding cured silicone doesn't seem to work as well with Sorta Clear series silicone, partly because it's nearly impossible to vacuum de-gas, which means it goes into the pressure pot with a lot more air trapped in it.
@daniellewis1914 жыл бұрын
My vacuum chamber kit shipped yesterday, and today you release this video
@Rybonator4 жыл бұрын
Honestly it's not a bad thing still. I prefer to use the vacuum method over pressure still, as it is a GUARANTEE that it works, and no bubbles will reform later. If you use a soft silicone, there is a chance that re-expanding bubbles could ruin your molds eventually (though it's a super small chance.) A vacuum ensures you have perfect molds every time :)

A pretty cheap alternative to a vacuum chamber I've found, for small projects at least: wide mouthed mason jar with the two-part lid, a vacuum bag (space bag), and a tiny electric vacuum that comes with some vacuum bag sets. (I got all of this for about $20.) Replace the lid plate with the vacuum bag seal bit that attaches to the vacuum, and run the little vacuum for 5-10 minutes. I was kind of afraid of burning the tiny motor out, but I haven't done it yet. 😅 I'm still pretty new to all this stuff, but this has worked pretty well for me. I've been using the molds I made this way in a pressure pot, and they have been working great.

Hey I got a suggestion: I make art out of resin and measuring is a PAIN IN THE BUTT, so what I do is I pour the two resin parts into separate glass pump-action soap/lotion dispensers. That way, for some of my molds I'm like "Okay, this one takes 5 pumps of each. This mold takes 7 pumps." Saves me a lot of time and you don't have to deal with measuring or sticky resin cups for when some of it inevitably spills over the side.
@Rybonator4 жыл бұрын
That is an awesome suggestion! I only worry about having air in the pump and getting my measurements off :(
@samu3lk50004 жыл бұрын
@@Rybonator I haven't had any problems with it yet and I've been doing it a couple months. Each time I fill the pump, about the first pump and a half is wasted to make sure there's no air inside, but otherwise it's pretty consistent. Also, in my experience, you don't have to be TOO accurate. If you're in the ballpark, it'll usually still work fine.

For applying silicone to your cast-forming die, I'd just get a gloved finger, dip it in the silicone, and dab each face. Faster than a paint brush, I think. Also I'm wondering if the bubbles in the silicone are actually microscopic, or if they're being forced to DISSOLVE into the liquid. Because if they were just very small but still present, wouldn't they re-expand when pressure was released and deform the silicone?
@Rybonator4 жыл бұрын
It could possibly be the explanation that you mention, I have heard of them becoming soluble in resin, but not in silicone. (though it still could be the case.) My general though process was that after the silicone cures, there is simply enough resistance from the cures silicone to prevent the bubbles from re-expanding. I'd love to do some additional testing/reading on the subject!

So I cast two 10-sided dice. Happy with the results except for one half of one of the dice which had significant pitting, the side opposite the sprue. Unfortunately when I cast the mold I did not have my tray system and I had a slight mishap when tightening the lid which resulted in one mold tipping over. i quickly righted it and had enough leftover to fill it back up from halfway. I am guessing that affected the mold and that is what caused the pitting in the casting but wanted to check and find out your thoughts.
@Rybonator4 жыл бұрын
Hmm that is odd, normally the pitting occurs on the side near the sprue, or the upper most portion. Try painting the silicone on with a bursh or toothpick before fully pouring and pressurizing and see if this fixes your issue.

@Rybonator4 жыл бұрын
They will probably be bubbly, but if you make opaque dice, you may never notice it! Check out my 24k gold dice or my glow dice, neither were made with a pressure pot :)

I have been seeing people around the Internet doing frosted dice. Maybe that would be an interesting thing to test. They are sanding them and then making molds after sanding
@Rybonator4 жыл бұрын
You totally can do that! Or you can spray your dice with a matte varnish when they are done to get the same effect, and protect them as well :)

You can do all of this without a pressure pot or vacuum :) Those just help to remove bubbles

my same pressure pot won't hold pressure between 30 and 40psi, do I have something not tight enough, or does it naturally loose air? Also, do you keep it in for the entire cure time? I did, but I had to keep pressuring my pot up since it didn't hold. It lost between 5 and 10 psi over an hour, until I would (every hour) put more air in.

I have been experimenting with 3d printed mold molds I have had great success and use less than a quarter as much silicone ( although I'm using composimold because its reusable)

I printed some of those as well to try out and was hoping for a resin savings. Haven't tried it yet on a master, but thanks for posting the info.

@@Rybonator i have had had pretty good success even without a pressure pot the stuff is pretty awesome, it has its limits I trying to recast a wizkid mini that had a staff and the heat melted the staff before it set and I ended up with a derpy staff in the mold and original and its clear enough to see where your cutting but not clear enough to do uv resins I assume ( haven't tested that) I would love to see what you could do with it with your setup amazon has 3 pounds of it for 39$ ( it's more than you would think it's about the size of a soccer ball ) it comes in like muffin tin shapes I think it's like the overpour from factory. Well I hope you get some and make some videos I learned a lot from your channel and I think more people would prefer a reusable ( recastable) solution instead of 2 part silicone which gets pricey fast www.amazon.com/ComposiMold-Used-3lbs-Reusable-Making/dp/B01NBMEKWA/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=composimold&qid=1581707509&sr=8-4

When you hot glued the die, does the glue come off the original die so it can be used again? Or is the die ruined now?

Do you have to use a vacuum chamber or pressure pot to be able to make the moulds?

If you have a vacuum-chamber: USE IT! Is is vastly better for the livetime and quality of the mold to first degas the silicon. And same thing for the resin. The pressure-pot works on resin cause the air can go into solution and the resin once cured is strong enough to hold it there. But for silicon that is not the case. Not only can it hold far less gas dissolved, but many if not most mold-making silicons can not hold the gas dissolved under normal atmospheric pressure. So over time random bubbles form throughout the mold and that can also happen close to the surface of the object you want to cast, creating indentations or even rupturing. But having a chamber is by no means a must, only when you really wanna make sure you get crystal clear castings and the best molds you could possibly get.

I'm having a hard time getting the corner of the die squared after cutting off the sprue, any recommendations? I think I'm going to recast my moldswith a small dowel on a face instead of a dice on the corner but I am concerned that the hole left will be too small.
@paullafleche50694 жыл бұрын
I use a Dremel with a cutting bit, and leave the spures on when taking the dice out of the molds.
@Rybonator4 жыл бұрын
A pressure pot really helps with the holes being too small, as it will mostly allow the resin to pull down into the mold, so you should have no real worries :)
@WCA14214 жыл бұрын
@@Rybonator it's really the holes being too big that's the problem, I end up having to whittle the corner where the sprue is down a lot to match up with other sides.

Hi i was wondering how long do you need to leave your resin in the pressure pot? Is it just up until around 40psi or do you leave it in the pot for the entire cure time (the cure time on my resin is 3 days)? Also have the same question for if i was to use a pressure pot for silicone? Thanks *(goblin emoji that doesnt exist)*
@Delzak4 жыл бұрын
So the pressure pot delivers the exact same results as a vacuum pot would? Or is it that there are some negative side effects from pressure setting the silicone but they are so minimal that it is negligible?
@Rybonator4 жыл бұрын
^ Essentially what you said. I have heard from some people that their molds come out warped when curing silicone in a pressure pot, but my imagining is that they used too high of a pressure, and it may have even warped the dice they were using under the pressure, but I can't be certain.
@Delzak4 жыл бұрын
@@Rybonator So for someone starting out, just go with the pressure pot and experiment before dishing out the extra money for a vacuum chamber. Thanks for the insight :)

What brands of dice are legal to use for molds? I’ve been using Chessex is that not fine? Haven’t sold anything but I might in future.
@Rybonator4 жыл бұрын
Honestly I'm not sure. Chessex is a big name, but I don't know if they have patents or not. The ideal way to go about things is to design your own dice/pay someone and have them 3d printed before selling for 100% certainty.

Love your channel rybonator! Question. At exactly 30 psi my emergency valve release begins to release air and I cannot seem to find a way to stop it from doing this. I've gotten it to about 28 and essentially had to duct tape it in place so it doesn't release air in an effort to keep the pot pressurized. Any advice?

@Rybonator4 жыл бұрын
So your 100% clear bet is to get a set 3d printed/design for yourself. If not, I would reach out to specific manufacturer's to see if they have a patent on their designs for which dice you intend to replicate. CHANCES ARE (don't quote me), any dice you can get from Alibaba or something similar are not branded.

If you vacuumed the silicone, then put it in the pressure pot you might get some super smooth molds. But as it is, I don't think you would see a super big difference. Maybe it would be noticeable with clear dice?

Hey, thanks for all the great content. I'm struggling to get my mold to fill completely. I usually end up with a bubble right at the top near the screw. Is there a trick to make sure the molds fill up all the way?
@Rybonator4 жыл бұрын
So I warm my resin up in a hot water bath (sink water) for about 20 minutes before mixing and pouring, it helps seep into the molds more easily. You can also try taking a pipette and suctioning the top of the molds where the air normally sits and seeing if there is air there or not before moving on to pressure casting! Hope this helps :)
