How to make Skottle Popcorn | Base Camp Basics

You may be stuck at home but that doesn't mean you have to put the camping gear away. Get ready for your next camping or overlanding trip with some Basecamp Basics. This time around we cover a simple camp cooking project that even the kids can help with - Skottle popcorn! Your may think popcorn is easy to make but there are a few tricks when using the Skottle so you don't burn your popcorn and so none of your little campers get burned either.
Never heard of a Skottle before? With origins in South Africa and popularized in the 1940's and 50's, the Skottle is a simple, but highly durable grill that is beloved by overlanders and outdoor enthusiasts all over the world. It resembles a flattened wok with three legs but it's simplicity of use and ease of clean up makes it a camp favorite out on the trail. It's also designed for use with an inexpensive Coleman style single burner and a gas bottle that provides the flame.

I gotta silly question? How do you pick it up to serve it? Ladle? Spatula? Your iron callused heat proof hands?

The skottle will heat up quick, but also cools down pretty quick as well. So a lot of the time I just eat it right off the skottle. However you an use a spoon or spatula to dish it out into bowls.
