By adding calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)2, hydrated lime to rice soup mixture the Chinese made rice mortar to build the Great Wall. It has stood for hundreds of years, and the same method of making the brick and mortar are still used today for repairs. It is also the glue used in Magemono, without the addition of the lime.

Thank you very much for this, Andrew! I studied hyogu (paper backing) while I lived in Japan and even though we always bought this (in buckets), my teacher always said I could make my own if I couldn't find it here in the States. The biggest problem with that was, he never gave me a recipe so I'm winging it! Thanks so much for the help!

Back home when were small this is how we put posters at school or other places. We cook our rice bit extra and use our hand to grind it (haha). We used when our books are torn too.....another thing we used all purpose flour.

The rice glue is just as new to me as using my hot glue ..I once worked for a history program doing things with the kids ..I was directed to use all things used in the year 1700 or earlier ..these ideas would have come in handy back then.Thanks again for sharing...

I never even thought about making glue until a reader on the DIYBookbinding.com website asked a question about it. I started doing a bit of research and decided to try it out. My next glue project is casein glue. ~ Andrew

When I was a kid I watched a traditional Japanese wood working video. The process started out cooking with rice as you did. But instead of making allot of it, they just made the sticky rice as much as they needed, made a tiny ball, put it on a board, then with a special rice spoon smashed up the rice as is and then made the past. Now it helped me understand that I've seen others use additives like vinegar and such in it. I would guard against this, not sure how it would effect book binding. I am not sure why they put vinegar in it. However, I later found that I could use rice powder, and just cook and then mix until the right consistency.

vinegar (and sometimes salt, and sometimes even hydrogen peroxide?) can be added to prevent it moulding and make it last longer

Making your glue doesn't sound crazy. It sounds like fun! I love classic Japanese wood blockprints whichh will probably get incorporated somehow into my book binding. Using a traditional material ads to my experience.

I hope this works on a very old, and one of my favorite Bibles. I have a soy milk Maker and it makes rice paste. The Bible has string in the binding also. I bet my husband and God can work miracles on it.

If you are in an Asian market, you can buy glutinous rice flour (aka: sweet rice flour or sticky rice flour). Follow directions from @2:58.

Do you put uncooked rice with water in the nutribullet, or did you combine water with cooked rice?
@DIYBookbinding6 жыл бұрын
I put uncooked rice into the Nutribullet and ground it up before cooking. It handles the rice just fine and the resulting slurry cooks quickly on the stove. ~Andrew

can you use this glue to make twine lamp shades??
@DIYBookbinding6 жыл бұрын
I would think this glue would work well for twine lamp shades. During my research, one of the applications I discovered was gluing leather onto the handles of knives which seems like a similar application. One primary consideration is that the glue is not waterproof when dry. If exposed to sufficient moisture, it can re-activate and become workable again. It's easy and cheap to make, so I recommend giving it a test. If it works well, let me know! ~Andrew

How good does this compare to other glue you could use for book binding, because i was thinking of making this instead of buying glue since I would have everything for it at home am in a bit of a bind (hehe get it?) Cause I wanted to finish the book I'm making for a friend as a birthday present this by this month and can virtually not spend another single cent on anything but necessities for I am but a poor student.

It would do nothing..your stomach acid breaks in down into simply rice’s main contribution..carbs via starches. The texture or stickiness may be tough to eat but will not harm you...
