This only work with a power supply that don't have short circuit protection, and has it's short circuit current limited to some value, for example, I have one of 250ma that keeps 650ma on short circuit, graphite has a characteristic of reduce the Ohmic resistance with the heat, how more hot, less resistance and more current, it creates a short circuit, I have a modified microwave oven transformer, so I have 2v, 3v, 5v, 6v, 7v, 9v and 12v on high current with a short circuit current of 200A, so I can say, graphite gets a so high current even on 5V or even 3V it can get 10, 15 or more amperes and pencil graphite rod gets incandescent, so the only way of using this and this work is controlling the current, this can be done with a transistor on 5V to create a USB soldering iron, use a current limiter circuit set to 2A, use a TIP 41C with a good heatsink.

keep in mind who ever is making it you need a minimum 12v 2amp powersupply or else it wont work properly and if your using 24v 5amp power supply then add a push button or else the lead of the pencil gets red hot and breaks/melts
