Hi from a flower shop owner! Flowers are sooo much more expensive than that, but I would be much happier receiving handmade flower buns. It would be your thought and time spent that meant much. Maybe I could convince guys to make the buns and give flowers too. Any lady getting that much would be smitten indeed!

Wow - what an incredible coincidence. I just made Flower Buns for the first time ever this past Wed night, just 2 days before Mike released this video. And if that's not strange enough, the video I watched on making buns went for a solid white look, while I decided to experiment with my buns I made 2 batches of bun dough, the first I added just a tiny bit of green food color, and (yup) green onions and salt (based on an idea from Mike's pancake video). To the second dough I added a hint of orange food coloring and (you wont believe) chopped Chinese sausage, mainly chosen to use up my last 2 sausages, and to have something to blend nicely with the orange dough. This literally and figuratively gave the buns a very interesting "twist", when I staced an orange piece with a green piece on the bottom. I felt those colors look natural (i.e. carrot and spinach) and really play up the flower theme, but I guess any color combination will work. I really don't have any baking experience, so Mike is right, that making these buns is pretty easy. I think the main things are to be careful not to add too much liquid, and to be patient and give the dough time to expand. I noticed my Green layer, the first one I kneaded, wasn't quite as airy as my second dough, as I think I should have waited just a bit longer before the rolling process. Anyway my family was amazed by the taste and the look of these buns. Like Mike said, it really makes you look like a pro, and just not that hard to do. I am ready to try again, and I think Mike's twisting instructions will help me do a better job on my next batch. Oh...one last thing that Mike also got right. The only thing I thought could make these flower buns tastier would be (yes) some cheese, so I melted some string cheese over the top as I ate them - if only I'd know, i'd have put the cheese in the dough like this recipe.

To answer your question, it will depend if we are talking about real roses or... let's say, chocolate ones. Because I like my chocolate, and then again I can dry the roses to make rose water/tea with real ones. BUT! I do agree I would love it if my boyfriend gave me flower buns, although I'll be honest it'd be awesome if he made them OR if we made them together. Those look delicious. I'll make sure to make some once I have access to a bamboo steamer.

You mention the rolled out dough looking like a pizza... I reckon you could cut some tomato and capsicum (bell pepper) into a 2mm dice, then do the same with some pepperoni. Use a thick tomato sauce to lightly cover your dough, top with the tomato, capsicum, pepperoni and some cheese. Steam and eat.

wow, hua juan has been my favorite since I was like 7. Esepcially hua juan with green onions (LOTS OF GREEN ONIONS) in them. We have very, very similar tastes! btw as a tip: if you don't want to get oil on your hands, pour it all in one spot on the dough, then you take a corner of the dough, and dip it in the oil, and use that to rub the oil all over the dough. hope that made sense.
