I’m loving your videos! You’re a very good instructor. Some thing that I started doing lately is sewing an additional seam on the part of the triangle that I cut off, then cut between the seams, and I have a small block. At the moment I’m making Lori Holts Twinkle Twinkle Scrappy Star quilt, so I’m planning to use those to make into pinwheel blocks to incorporate in the borders. Not sure how yet but I will work something out.

Really like your videos. They are easy to follow. What kind of cutting mat do you use. I'm looking f for a new one.

I think it’s one of those Quilters Select cutting mats. I use a Martelli cutting mat that I recommend very highly, I’ve used it for 2+ years, and I’m still not seeing any cutting lines on it. It has a purple side and a yellow side that makes it easy to see, depending on the color of ur rulers, templates or fabrics. Martelli products are an investment, I know, but they have such good products that last & you’re not having to replace them every few months. Good luck on your sewing journey 😊.

My current cutting mat is from Riley Blake Designs- designed by Christopher Thompson. They come in a variety of sizes and are reversible too- one side is black and one side is white.

Great tips in this video; thanks! I like to use a 3 pound hand weight at the top of my ruler that keeps it from slipping. Also, some quilters will go ahead and sew a second seam a 1/2 inch from the first one then when they cut away the "waste", they already have a smaller 1/2 square triangle ready to go for another project! Thanks again for a very good tutorial!
@jessica_dayon

Yes, some quilter like to do that. I personally don't because I don't want to make the HSTs unless I have a specific project in mind. I prefer to have the scraps so that I can use them for anything in the future.

Hi Jessica! Great tutorial! I really need to practice using your method!! You are doing fabulously as a self-taught quilter. What are you making with your flying geese?? Thanks for sharing!

I have the same question as pbar above. Why reduce your pressure to 0 - what benefit have you noticed? Great tutorial and love the trimming (lining up) technique.
@jessica_dayon
@jessica_dayon Жыл бұрын
I feel like less pressure makes it go through so nicely. It’s similar to my old machine and so I’m really comfortable using it. Of course you can experiment it and make the decision that’s best for you.

I love your videos Jessica. Thanks for all the good info. I will try the presser foot pressure reduction. That would probably help prevent that little bit of stretching when attaching a long border onto something pieced. Even when I pin a lot, which is always, it still ends up slightly longer. What quilt is behind you?? The one under the star quilt. Was that a sew along?
@jessica_dayon
@jessica_dayon Жыл бұрын
Yes, I find that reducing the pressure helps the pieces just glide under the foot. The one behind me, under the star quilt, is called Happy Go Lucky and it is in my book- Precut Parade. We didn't do a sew along for that one (but we did do one for the star quilt above it).

When I use this method I sew another line 1/2” into the scrap so that when I cut it off it’s already a HSQ. 🎉

Are your black,lines on your extend table made by a Sharpie? Are the lines underneath the clear table and if so, how did you get them to be so accurate ?
@jessica_dayon
@jessica_dayon Жыл бұрын
They are sharpie. I usually just draw them on the top but they fade as I sew. This time, I did them on the top and bottom. The top will fade but I think the bottom will stay nicely. I use a ruler when I draw them.

I'm curious. I have never heard of reducing the pressure on your presser foot to "O". Why did you consider this and what benefit does it provide?

I haven’t adjusted my presser foot on my Bernini while piecing. Can you explain how this helps?
@jessica_dayon

I like the way the fabric glides under the foot when I’m piecing when the pressure is 0. You can try it out to see if it’s for you or not.

This video is just a general instruction on how to do stitch and flip flying geese. You can google 'stitch and flip flying geese size chart' and come up with a lot of results to tell you sizes for the flying geese size you are looking to make.
