Learn how to make a guitar pick from a rock.
Here's a video where I show the exact same tumbling method that I used to on these picks:
• Tumbling Shaped Rocks ...
My Lot-O recipe for tumbling shaped rocks, cabochons, or any other flat rocks:
Stage one: 2 days with 2 TABLEspoons of either 120/220 or straight 220 silicon carbide.
Stage two: 3 days with 1/2 TEAspoon 500 grit aluminum oxide and 1 TABLEspoon of borax
Stage three: 2 days with 1/2 TEAspoon aluminum oxide polish and 1 TABLEspoon of borax
Between each stage rinse and then burnish (wash) for about an hour with 1/4 cup water and 1 tablespoon borax.

Hey there, great video. I play guitar but also just got into polishing rocks. The thinner you can make the bottom of the pick which hits the strings the better. Very cool idea. I want to make some of these now. I have agates that would make great pics,and they dont wear down like plastic ones probably.

I am interested in making picks out of agate slices that I can buy online. But I am limited in tools. Do you think that this could be done using just a bandsaw, dremel, and a basic bench mounted grinder?
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks 5 жыл бұрын
Ryan do you have a lapidary band saw or one for wood? A wood saw won’t work. You’d need something with a diamond blade and water to cool it. Same with the grinder. You can use silicon carbide wheels on a grinder, but they don’t work nearly as well as diamond wheels. Then you still have to keep the wheels wet without electrocuting yourself. A lot of people use tile saws to cut rocks and even use the edge to grind and shape them. I think a tile saw would be the minimum tool I would attempt this with. You’d still need a vibratory tumbler to polish them up.

Actually I have played guitar pretty seriously for 53 years and a properly formed agate plectrum is the ideal material. Forget flex in a plectrum. You make a hard pick soft with technique that gives to the resistance, but you ever make a soft hard no matter what you do. It also looks like you using the Jim Dunlop 3 mm Big Stubby as a model. Again perfect, especially if you can devise a way to put the textured grip dimple in as well because the will become slippery at certain times; humans leak 🙂in several different ways. If you get the dimple neatly textured and the contours perfect I’d pay good money for a few of these of and extremely hard agate. If Im a not playing classically ie: plectrum or chicken picking, I use a 3 mm Big stubby rhat doesn’t give or flex an iota and can chop put the long train running rhythm no problens at all with a solid pick in fact it is better to develop the ability for the reasons stayed above. The only thing wrong with the big stubbys is THEY WEAR and Im forever with the wet and dry bring them true again because picking scrapple from the apple and ornithology is pretty up tempo music that wont tolerate nicks from string wear. How much? Im a serious player so want them just like a 3mm Jim Dunlop big stubby but am happy to pay if you make them well and fee of cracks in very hard moss agate. Id buy a few. You might also ponder making thumb pick that loop around the thumb which I also use for jazz in a Joe Pass vein with a lot of extended lines so I can finger pick using the thumb pick nearly as I yse my naked thumb but then can use it also like a normal plectrum I cant drop 🙂. So in conclusion, an agate plectrum is the ideal tool for guys that know if well made. And as usual, anything not well made is not worth jack ...... Most of yours look pretty good but some looked a little bumby which could of been the light. You will sell good ones though and for a good price, especially if you can get the grip dimple which doesnt need to take a polish. Also a tumbler polish is a random operation. You have no control what wears once shes going and it wont always be optimal. You need a wand like opal dressers use with birch adhesive to hold one face
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks 3 жыл бұрын
I just found your comment in my spam folder. I'm sorry for not responding sooner. I have not figured out how to make the grip grippy yet. I don't really specialize in making guitar picks, they're just one of many things I make. They're not perfect, just pretty good. I don't sell them for a lot of money because I can make them fairly quickly by my method. Could you describe the texture they need to have to not be slippery? Is it just not polished, or do you need a little indentation for your thumb and finger? I could more easily make the surface a little rough than I could make an indentation. I think I'd just tumble them in a coarse grit and then polish the edges on my cab machine. It would be very difficult to get the untumbled area to be a very precise circle.

Buying that equipment would cost way more than it would be worth just to make a few picks for yourself. If you're also interested in working with rocks as a hobby and making picks would just be an added bonus, that's a different story. At the time I made this video, everything I used was purchased second hand, except for the Lot-O tumbler. I have since upgraded my cab machine, compliments of Kingsley North who sent me one for free in return for me doing a review of it. It's a great machine, by the way. I probably paid around $1000 for what you see me use in the video. If you were to buy new equipment, it would be several thousand dollars. I think a real lapidary slab saw would be pretty important to cut very thin slabs and have the slabs even. It would be hard to cut thin slabs like that on something like a tile saw or even a lapidary trim saw. The problem would be getting the two cuts parallel. That's easy in a saw with a vice that is powered. You put the rock in the vice, turn on the saw, come back in about 20 minutes, and turn a little crank, moving the rock over for the next cut. You could probably cut the shape of the pick on a tile saw, but I haven't actually used one before. I know they're popular for cutting rocks. You could probably find one of those used pretty easily. My cab machine costs between $1300 and $1900 depending on whether you get upgraded wheels or not. You wouldn't need the better wheels for making picks. An alternative would be to get a flat lap, which is much cheaper and would probably work fine for these. The Lot-O tumbler costs a little over $200. I have links to Kingsley North and the Rock Shed in the description of all my videos if you want to do some shopping. That's where I buy all of my lapidary stuff.

Would petoskey stone make a good pick or would it be too soft to use?

I think that would break right away if you tried to use it. It would make a nice necklace though.

@@MichiganRocks Bummer. I live in Michigan as well, just a few miles south of Saginaw and I play many stringed instruments, one of them being a mandolin. It would be cool just to have a petoskey guitar pick magnet to go on the fridge. How much would that cost?

Thanks for the tip (hee hee). I'm not a guitar player as I said in the video, so it's helpful to hear from someone who knows about these things. I do worry that the rock will chip if it gets too thin. You're talking about more point, rather than thinner, though, right?

@@MichiganRocks I have one stone pick made of Jasper (I think) a gift from my girlfriend. It is 4mm thick and has a point akin to a Jazz3 pick, the taper from the flat side to the point starts 5mm back from the point...I love that pick but then I do have a bit of a fetish when it comes to guitar picks. I have made my own out of coins but the tips wear down too quick...I would suggest grinding an absolute point on the pick and whatever rounding that occurs with the tumbler would be enough. Have you a shop where I could perhaps purchase one or two of your picks? they are very nice and a lot of work I see..

I do not have an online store. Currently I have some guitar picks a Christian book and gift store in Alpena, MI called Olivet. They have a Facebook page, but I don’t know if they do any sales through it. Thanks again for the suggestions.

freedom dove nope, my wife is not interested and my son is in college. Making postings, packing things up, and running them to the post office all take time. I hardly have time to work on rocks as it is. KZbin videos take a lot of time to make, at least for me. Maybe I’ll get faster some day, but that day is not here yet.

Sorry to make you cringe. There's no danger from the saw blade. Diamond blades have no teeth, just very fine diamonds. They grind through the rock rather than cutting like a wood saw. I can touch that blade with no problem at all. Take a look at the video in this link. I touch the blade while it's running to show that there's no danger. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mnuaoqWfhKtjqJY
