This brings back memories of me briefly growing up in NL, my mom allowed me to get the stroopwafel crumble at the Sunday market, but without the syrup.

Hi, I'm from Indonesia and I work as a tour guide in Central Kalimantan and one of my guest brought a can of stroopwafel as a gift and I fell in love to it in a first bite. It is so delicious and I just can't get enough of it. I'm very curious how to make it myself turns out it's so hard to find the iron and the syrup here in Indonesia, but your video is homey yet lovely. You describe it very well and very easy to understand. I love they way you managed your video, it's so calming, crystal clear to watch, and I can't get bored watching it. I hope one day I can make the stroopwafel by myself. Thank you.

We never heated them up on top of our tea cup, we ate it while drinking the tea. And you are right, in the last 10 years they have become popular (and expensive) in the U.S. Thank you so much for sharing your videos, I am a very visual learner, so these help me so much and bring back so many memories.

I first heard of these in Groningen where a friend that lives there bought me a bag to take home. He said they were very Dutch and that the way to eat them was to place them on top of your cup of coffee to warm the insides before eating. I think he was originally from Arnhem but I can't remember for sure.

Toine, thank you very much for the effort you put into creating this recipe and making a video. I found your channel while looking for a stroopwafel iron on Amazon. Someone recommended your channel in a review of the iron you use. I had such a good time making these and listening to some Dutch tunes. I've watched a bunch of your other videos and they are all great. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ For anyone who may be interested, this recipe can be made vegan with a few really easy changes. -Replace egg with a flax egg: Mix together 7g golden flaxmeal + 32 mL water. Allow to gel for 10 minutes. -Use Earth Balance in place of butter 1:1. -Use soymilk in place of dairy milk.

My wife, daughter and I moved to Haarlem for a year in 2017. Though I sometimes wish we didn't move back to the states, making and enjoying some of my favorite Dutch treats every fall and winter since returning has helped the Netherlands feel a little closer. I hope to be back someday, but for now we will rely on oliebollen, krentenbollen, and now stroopwafels using your recipe. Fantastically thorough and concise tutorial. Heel erg bedankt!

I made them and they taste so good! Stroopwafels are awesome. Ever since we had hot stroopwafels in Amsterdam I've been trying out different recipes. This is a keeper! I live in Sweden and work with 2 dutch guys, the first time they brought stroopwafels to work and introduced me to them, I put one on top of my mug as soon as they had poured up my coffee, and they said "oh, so you've had these before?" because they said that that's what dutch people usually do. one of them are from the north part and the other the south part. so probably not a local thing.

Good day to you! Being an American and not well traveled, I'd never heard of these before today. A generous neighbor gave us many oranges from their orchard. I want to do something to show appreciation for her generosity and her husband said she loves Dutch food, as she's Dutch & Stroopwafels were here favorite. I would love to be able to make this for her as a thank you so I searched online for recipes. Your video was so informative and easy - hee he - to follow. I appreciate how you show us the actual mixing process. I hope I can succeed at making them for her. My town was founded by Dutch folks, hence, I have many Dutch neighbors and our community is very generous. I'm going to reach out to the town to see if anyone has a Palmer waffle maker they wouldn't mind loaning me. I really hope to do these right. Thank you again for sharing and I will let you know how they come out. :)

Thank you for the recipe, i love these. Living in sweden i'm lucky there are shops that sell them in 10 packs (i have to stop myself buying them as much as i'd like to). Looking forward to trying to make my own though. Funny about the warming up, i never knew that that was a thing at all, until i flew with KLM in october (they fly from my home town) and decided to buy some with my coffee on the flight and then reading the package of the waffles, it said to put them on top of your warm drink to warm them up. so i tried, was okay, didn't make much difference. i suppose a tiny little cup of airline coffee wasn't warm enough :P but it's funny to hear this wasn't a thing in the netherlands in the past, and now it's printed instructions on the stroopwafel package (in dutch and english).

Few questions: - Make sure they are completely cooled off before storing them in an airtight container. - Store them in a cool, dry place. - Make sure the syrup isn't too thin when putting it on the waffle. - Make sure you add enough syrup when putting it on the waffle.

We used all natural almond extract, no artificial flavors. But yes, when I have time, I make it without extract, and let it sit in the fridge for several days.

@@ToinesKitchen it could be that the Dutch almond extract has a bitter almond in the batch. Something that is supposed to be mandatory in making almondspijs and I just do not like it.

Funny that you mention that putting a stroopwafel on your cup of coffee is foreign to you. At home we've always done it. We also wrapped amandelstaaf in aluminium foil and place it on top of our wood furnace in the living room. That stuff is the best when it's hot

I think that putting the stroopwafel on top of a tea or coffee mug is new. I asked my almos 90 year old mom and she never saw this in NL before. I suspect that the 2 large Dutch industrial manufacturers have used this idea to open into new markets. Here in Spain they are called “tapatés” which translates into tea covers. They have become incredibly popular now everywhere and I think it’s just a great marketing job by distinguishing this cookie from all the others.

Thanks for the video. I'm moving to the Netherlands when I retire from my job in 3 1/2 years. I want to learn everything I can about the Dutch culture including cooking Dutch food. I just received my Palmer Belgian cookie iron and I want to begin using it this weekend. Also I mill all my own flour. What is a good alternative flour to all purpose flour?

If your making them at scale - do you have to spread the syrup immediately individually after cutting them in half or can you do it all at once when they’re all cut open and spread syrup for the whole yield.

Hi Toine, I'm from Denmark and I have some problems finding the brown sugar. I have tried to use Danish brown farin sugar but it wasn't good. Do you know if the light brown muscovado sugar can be used instead of brown sugar?

Have you ever made them using cake or pastry flour, to simulate the Zeeuwse flour? I don't know about warming up the stroopwafel, some do, some don't. Our family did, on a hot cup of something or on the gas heater stove.

The heating over a cup of coffee is probably geographical feature. My friend who spent quite some time in Groningen told me already 20 years ago that this is the right way to do it. When I was in Nijmegen, can't say quite the same area, this was also seen as traditional. So, I don't know. :) As to the iron, every time I was in the Netherlands I just could not find a normal, gas-heated double-sided waffle maker, with which you don't even have to cut - just snap it open really quickly and the waffle splits from the steam inside - just seal them with the syrup, as the legend has it the original scenario was, and then scrape off when they cooled down a bit.. Saw these used once in a Christmas Market in Prague, prepared by the Dutch guy from Driebergen (?), smiled and joked all the way through but refused to sell one at the end, and he had like five :))

It helps to split them. Some people make them without yeast, and then just stack two waffles on top of each other with syrup in between.
