🕊Perfect dumpling and as the oldest of 6 children, I made them just like this, without CofC Soup, to feed our family of 8. Nourished us well. Same with beans & cornbread. I was cooking and sewing before I began school! Now at 72, I continue to love these tasty basic “survival” meals! 🥰🕊🙏🏻

As the oldest of 5, I share similar memories. Growing up on a farm, when Mama fried a chicken, she made both dumplings and gravy along with biscuits for sopping. She used the same recipe for biscuits. Just saved some of the dough to roll out for her dumplings. I'm sure wishing I could sit at her table for supper tonight. Thanks for bringing back good memories.

@@roseschrader4917 Hi Rose! My 1914 Mom from Ark- she used flour water salt and rolled on cornstarch. May I ask for your c&d recipe? I was adopted and b1966, didn't get a chance to write her recipe down. All I recall is a whole bodied chicken boiled up, taken off the bone. Get the broth boiling to drop the "sinker" dumplings into. She did use a drop of egg shade food coloring to finish up. This is all I can remember. ~Alaskan Eskimo nurse 💚

My grandmother made chicken and dumplings that were so good, you couldn't push away from table until you were in pain. The problem was that she had no recipe, she did everything by eye, from memory. My mother and my sister tried for years to duplicate her dumplings but were never successful. I saw my mother's notes on making dumplings that she made from watching grandmother make them. I started making them per my mother's notes. Chicken and dumplings are comfort food and I knew my grandmother didn't use low-fat, low calorie, health conscience anything. I made my dumplings with a mind's eye toward the dumplings as "comfort food" and my mother and sister began asking me how to make my dumplings. "Mom, they are from your recipe." I would tell her. It turns out that they didn't exactly follow their own notes. My mother didn't like dark meat chicken so she only used white meat. My sister would extract ALL of the fat from the broth. They made so many changes that their dumplings didn't taste like grandmother's dumplings. Well, imagine that, change nearly every aspect of a recipe and the end product doesn't taste the same. Of course they know more about cooking than I will ever hope to know so I can't tell them anything.

Susan, strange (funny) how recipes differed from region to region. I'm from NC. Here, chicken pot pie is much different from chicken & dumplings. Always vegetables in chicken pot pie, baked in a crust. Chicken and dumplings was just chicken broth, seasonings and dumplings -- maybe some chicken meat, if all of it wasn't fried. Love it any way it's cooked.

They turn out more fluffy, but that is up to the cook and what the family likes best. I am sheltering at home now, cooking for two and relying on what is on hand and delivery from local markets as it becomes available ( 9-10 days after ordering). Luckily we are somewhat well stocked with organic beans and rice and love hoppin' john!
