I just made a set of shoes for my dog and, oh my gosh, you're right, they are the best boots ever! He actually wears them, comfortably, and they look soooo gooood!!! One tip that might come in handy when making them, I put wax paper over the rubberized piece when sewing them onto the fleece, and that helps the presser foot to glide over the material and the paper just tears off when done. Thank you again for this pattern. They are absolutely adorable!

I like the wax paper idea! I wax my bobbin thread with bee's wax as I fill it, for heavy or tacky stuff.

This is a life saver. I have made or purchased at least 20 different boots for my little 8 lb dogs. We live in SE Wisconsin and the snow and ice and cold and salt are brutal on their feet. Without boots, they can only be outside 2 minutes. The boots always fall off. My husband found your videos out of desperation for the pups. I made 4 sets today and they worked wonderfully. Nearly the same thing I have made for years but a tighter fit and putting the Velcro between the pads made all the difference. They literally went for a jog today twice and the boots were warm and dry when they got home and all still on the dogs! A miracle. I used polar fleece and tanned deer hide and 1/2 I. Velcro. I made the first set using 2 pieces like you did but made the second set with one long strip of polar fleece and one piece of hide positioned so there was a toe and a bottom. Added Velcro, folded in half and sewed up each side - seamless toe with less bulk. Thank you so much - especially for the fitting and positioning!! I wish I could add pictures of the process I used.

I made these boots for my Min Pin. He recently had surgery on his front paws and I used the boots to keep him from licking his bandages and to give him a break from wearing his “cone of shame”. They worked like a charm and his vet was really impressed with them too! Thanks for a great tutorial.

Put some painter’s tape on the bottom of your presser foot to prevent it from sticking to the rubberized fabric. You can also use a Teflon presser foot.

I've made many sets of your old boots and the nails did come through. Thanks for the upgraded toes. A friend gave me some of that rubberized stuff and was wondering how I could sew it. Thanks for that. I sew on an old treadle sewing machine so I was really impressed by the reverse thing. Wow how nice. Again, thanks for the video!

Hi! I live in Arizona so snow is not an issue, however, the heat is treacherous to a dogs feet. Imagine what it can do when you can literally fry an egg on the asphalt during our hottest months! Because of our climate we also have a far greater number of homeless people, many of whom have dogs and I want to cry when I see them walking with no protection on their feet. So I make a ton of these boots and keep a supply in my car and when I see a dog barefoot, I give them a full set. The problem I had with using anything rubberized is that they tended to get sticky due to such high temperatures, so I use leather instead. It lasts a long time and almost takes on the shape of their feet after they've worn them awhile. Kind of like our most comfortable old pair of shoes. And because I give them away, I don't purchase new leather. Instead, I go to the Goodwill on their half price days and buy men's leather coats for next to nothing and you can get a lot of soles and reinforced toes out of one coat!

Is this cool or what?!!! And how nice that you're sharing. FYI, look into getting a teflon foot for your machine. If one isnt availble for your machine try putting a small piece of scotch tape on the underside of your foot. This will help the material glide as opposed to the " drag" you're experiencing. Thanks again! Love it!!

Thank you for sharing this! I live in Albuquerque and the heat is really hard on dogs' feet. Dog owners who are living on the street have an especially hard time protecting their dogs' feet. Have you tried a walking foot for your sewing machine? It will help keep all layers (including rubberized) of fabric together while you sew. It’s like an extra set of feed dogs making sure all layers go through your machine at the same time. Cheap on Amazon, but you would have to make sure it will fit your make and model. Thank you for this tutorial!

Hi, I love these and have managed to order the Toughtek and wrap around velcro in the UK, I want to make a longer version of these. My son has two beautiful Vizlas and Cooper has had to have stitches in one of his front paws, poor wee boy. He has the blue vetwrap on but it isn't waterproof and you'll know how difficult it is to keep this clean and dry. Could I just make the length longer while keeping the width the same. I know it's probably obvious but this will be my first time making these. They look amazing and thank you for your wonderful videos.

Has anyone here tried this and could you tell me if they are good for everday use? I have a service dog and she has to have boots for the summer because of the pavement and for walks. I'm going to be making alot of gear tonight (vests,collars, leashes, guide handles, pullstraps, ect.) I really need boots but don't want to spend a fortune to find out that they dont fit or they slip off. Edit: I made them and I absolutely love them they are perfect and I suggest them to anyone who wants to make them

I can't remember which video you made reference to your sewing machine being old but let me tell you, I've been sewing for over 50 yrs and I used that machine in Home-ec classes at school. They are a real treasure and a wonderful machine! I've noticed they are wanted by so many sewists when they search for a good quality machine, so you are fortunate to own one already. I'm making your boots today for our Maltese 'Biscuit' and am so excited to have found you and your videos. I've bought and tried other resources of making the boots, but of course they didn't work for one reason or another. Since I found you, I've told every pet owner I know about your wonderful videos, so please keep making them.

I found your original video a few years ago and have been making boots for my Westie boy ever since. They have saved both of us a great deal of pain and frustration. A suggestion for you ... you might try using a walking foot on your sewing machine. It will draw both pieces of fabric through at the same time. Thanks for sharing your new discovery. The synthetic suede only lasts us one season, as our walks are primarily on pavement. I appreciate your ideas!

I have 2 tiny chihuahuas. One is 2 lbs the other is 4 lbs. So for the 4 lb chi, I guess the fabric should be 1 x 1 1/2? what about my 4 lb chi?1/2 x 3/4? Also, I thought I would use snuggle flannel because I made abut 20 rag quilts for Christmas and have lots of left over fabric. Does the type of fabric matter? I'm sure cotton wouldn't work unless maybe you are dressing your dog up just for show and in warmer weather. LOL

PS: Thank you so much for this. I think I missed how you measure the material to get the perfect fit in case the measurements you have given are off a little.. or do you just keep cutting the fabric down?
@PetPrepper
@PetPrepper 2 жыл бұрын
First of all sorry for the late reply. Second, check out the description box below the video. There are links to my other boot making and care/fitting videos that should help. I did state that if I can't see your dog in person, the measurements are approximate. A 50lb Boxer is going to have way bigger feet than a 50lb Greyhound, so yes my measurements are off a bit over the internet, this is why I only sell them in person. Cut and sew them bigger than you think they need to be and you can always sew them smaller, this should work out fine. Thank you

Thank you so much for the pattern and technique. I was struggling with snow balls. I have a Giant Schnauzer and we like to go cross-country skiing. When the snow if wet and fluffy her legs accumulate about 3 pounds of snow each. It is super heavy for her, and she stops to bite them off. I don't want to shave her legs in winter. So a made a TALL pair. I added 2 more velcro tabs- strategically placed so her joints could move. They fit perfect, and we went out briefly in the snow. I have to make the other 3 now, and give them a good test run. But I think it will work. I used ribbing material- and thing pig skin leather. For the price I paid I could have bought nice nylon ones on the internet, but they weren't as tall, didn't like the colour, and weren't a custom fit. Thanks so much. I have watched all you videos about 5 times each , and as a result, I think I did it!!

Wonder if using hot glue (really thin bead) would help? Also, when you stitch the long part of the bootie first & have a few stitches in, wouldn't the machine not make the heavier materal slide out of place. Oh and stitching the Velcro, an X would make it even stronger.

I have to order all of the fabric since moving over here to Norway. How much fabric would I need for 2 sets of boots for my little Alaskan Husky and Belgian Sheepdog. Both I think are medium sized on the smaller size of medium but not small.
@PetPrepper
@PetPrepper 8 жыл бұрын
Oh boy you are making me do math lol. I would order at least 1 1/4 yard of the fleece, as average bolts come in 60" width. I don't know if you can get the one wrap velcro in small amounts, but you will need 72" at 3/4 wide. For the Toughtek, I think the smallest piece you can get it is 19x36 on etsy for around $10.50. You could always send me a private message and I could work with you on sending you just what you need. I am sure the shipping would be outrageous, but you wouldn't be wasting money on wasted material.

also when I made these I cut up the blue waterproof gloves you find at home depot. they have the same texture. we use them in the scuba diving dry suit world about $5 pair. I like your fabric choice better.
@PetPrepper
@PetPrepper 8 жыл бұрын
That is a great idea for folks who are just making one set. How did the glove fabric hold up to the stitching? Some of the rubber fabrics I have tried seemed to be weakened by the stitching and wouldn't hold up.
@greglevitz3141

seems to hold up pretty good. I have an industrial machine so I used better thread. your directions were spot on. I like your idea of elastic Velcro.
@greglevitz3141

Marta just go to home depot for the blue gloves. I believe Atlas make them. it's a bit tricky to do because of the small piece you end with. I did a web search for toughtek. you can buy small quantities of it. I think that material is even better than the blue gloves. most likely you will need to make a sets of boots. as far as completely waterproof. I tried it and looked stiff. also it might get hot in there. the directions were perfect. I would just add the Velcro that stretches.
@PetPrepper
@PetPrepper 8 жыл бұрын
Anything you stitch is not going to be completely waterproof unless you seal the stitching. Also dogs cant sweat like humans, they only sweat out of their paw pads, so make sure their feet are able to breathe.

Now those I can get piles of from Princess Auto here they have black ones too. They should work great. I think for sewing I will try just using tissue paper over the material to make the pressure foot slide better.

Ducttape206 It should help you on rubberised surface it also works on faux leather or suede as well as helping if you use very fine materials like tulle etc plus the fact it pulls off easy but don't use duct tape or electrical tape as they have a different type of adhesive

Thank you. Going to try to make these as soon as I can gather up the materials (or similar materials.) My pup has a hard time with the cold in winter (especially times like now when it's averaging about -15c during the day. Walk half a block and she's whining her feet hurt, even though she's a large dog! I haven't really wanted to spend money on boots for her because. . .well, they're EXPENSIVE and the likelihood of one (or more) getting tossed off and lost in the snow is too great. Making them is far far better. I can just make replacements. :D

First I want to tell you that I love your boots! I have 5 dogs and my mom has 1 dog, but when i first found your video I had 6 dogs and my mom had 3 dogs.. All 9 dogs have worn your boots. All of my personal dogs can go out in the cold but after a 5 minutes in the extreme cold their feet start to freeze up. My mom's 17 lb dog however is lucky to last a minute or two in the extreme cold before he is on his hind legs begging to be picked up. When he is wearing your old version of the boots he actually stays outside way long and can do all of his business. With out these boots he would be going potty in the house and he is not pee pad trained! So thank you for being so wonderful and willing to share your amazing pattern with all of us!! I was also wondering if you can tell me where you by Toughtek at in bulk? I need to make boots for at least 6 dogs and i'd like to have two pairs of boots for each dog so the other pair has time to dry. I know you suggested Etsy but is that the cheapest place to go?

Love these boots. My Maggie has a booboo between her toes & I have to keep it covered with white socks to heal. My socks just aren't good enough, couldn't figure out how to keep them on. Searched KZbin and found you! I didn't have everything I needed but made do with what I had. Took an old pair of white crew socks of mine, had scraps from a leather skirt and voila, have a boot for Maggie to wear and stay dry when she goes out to go potty in the snow. I was trying to secure them above the elbow, just like you said NOT TO DO! Works so much better the way you instructed. However, you didn't mention how to fit onto the hind legs and that's where Maggie's sore is. Any tips for that? You didn't mention the dimension for the toe guard on the better best version. Looks like I could wing it so not concerned, but I'm sure there are novices out there that would love to know. Great Job PetPrepper

So....the boots are great but I just want ask you one question. Are you sewing the waterproof fabric on the RIGHT side of the pink fabric? I get a bit confused about right side and wrong side (front and back) of fabric. Sorry that I'm a bit thick 😜

Do not be sorry. Some fleece has a rough side and a smooth side. It matters to me because I am making them for customers, but there is so very little difference that they most likely would never know if I used the wrong side. If you don't care, your dog won't care, you are doing just fine

Well I've made one set with fleece and a waterproof fabric I purchased from Spotlight here in Australia. They turned out beautifully. Purple and black, my favourite colours. Then I used fleece again but replaced the waterproof fabric with some left over cotton material I had stored away. It's very hot and humid here so she wore them outside today and walked pretty darn well for her first try!! Thank you for answering quickly and I really believe you do make 'the world's very best doggy boots' 💜👍🌺

Did you find the videos? They work on my end and I have asked other people to try and they said they worked. What size boots are you making? Every reinforced toe and bottom are different with the different sizes. Try half of the bottom and 1/4 for the toe, that is about what I do

ok, No I have tried to copy and paste on my laptop and also on my phone. It says the video is not available. I am making the 12-20 lbs. for my medium dog. I went ahead and did half (for the reinforce toe part) of the paw cover (the bottom). It seemed to work well. I will still try to get the video. I am not sure what is going on. could you maybe re-post the link here for me? Thanks

@PetPrepper A "walking foot" is a sewing machine attachment you can get at JoAnn's. It helps to ensure that thick/slippery layers do not shift when they are sewn together. (So you wouldn't need to pre-glue your fabrics together.) The previous commenter was just trying to be helpful.
