I am at an age where I appreciate a handmade gift over a store bought one. During the Great Depression parents often collected toys their children had, which needed repairing, and they'd repair them. Mom's would make little dresses for dolls. It's time to get back to that.

I love making handmade presents. As do my friends. Although I think I bit of slightly more than I could chew with the patchwork bags I have made for birthday presents this year! Being hexagons they were stitched by hand. Finished the last one today, although I still have the pincushion and needlecase to finish. Then a set for me, but that will be a 2024 project! 😆

At first i was a bit disappointed that this had to be sewed but i soon got over that watching you, plus i have a sewing machine so i figured once you got the hang of this you could fly through with the sewing. I'm from the UK and what i call REAL crafting has only taken off in the last 10 years so there's not a lot of video's to watch. I really appreciated too that you took the time to explain so well, believe me not everybody does. As it's a bit too close to Christmas for me to start these now i'm thinking of starting them after the holidays and making a ton of them all ready and waiting to gift to someone, i just hope they turn out as well as yours. Thank you so much for sharing with us and Happy Holidays to you. Shirley from the UK.🎄

I have a few small squares of fabric that I had made matching dresses for my sisters, Mom and Aunt (Mom's sister) for Easter. While it is bunnies and so forth, us 3 girls are the only girls, is having all boys for cousins. When we all came out we either got playfully teased and We drove our oldest brother crazy because there where 5 of us all with the same dress on and where "threatened" to never do that again! Lol. So the fabric has a lot of memories and the bigger scraps where ruined from our "finished" basement flooding a whopping over 2 feet! It will be bittersweet because My Aunt (I only had 2, and my other Aunt I have only seen a couple times in my life, with a occasional bday card when she remembers, she older. So this Aunt we where VERY close with) this Aunt, Aunt B, she Died very suddenly from covid-19 in early March. She was found incoherent by her hisband's caregiver, rushed to the hospital and died the next morning. We didn't know it was in our state yet. She actually would have been the first known to die from it in our state, but her test was lost, but it was confirmed from symptoms, and the fact that my grown cousin that had rushed to her side, got it a week later. The state 2 days later went to lockdown and my parents are too high risk, so we didn't get to go to her memorial in July. Dear Auntie B was the one that got me into sewing, teaching me how to sew my first button, and she sewed us when we where little our very own little house on the prarie dresses, matching bonnets and color cordanating pinafore. This pattern reminds me alot of her and a style she would have made for a quilt. And probably would have made this ornament. Sorry for getting all sappy, but this sure gave me a rush of memories and feelings. Whoever reads this, please stay safe and well and talk to your loved ones today, because they may not be hear tomorrow. If you aren't taking this covid-19 seriously, I lost my Aunt to this and what they go through is totally awful and heart wrenching. It is horrible to loose a loved one that way. I have 2 brothers that had it in CA in January (they thought they had the worst cold ever, later a friend that they actually gave it to tested positive with antibodies) my Cousin's girlfriend's daughter had it without knowing and the same cousin got it. Who insedendly has a doctorate in nurse Andsthaist, and ended up working in the in a big hospital's Covid-19 ward (says you just can't realize what this does to a person unless you see it in person, making it worse when you know what it permanently does to them) it made him so sick he almost went to the ER himself, saying her had never been so sick in his life, but he didn't go because he knew how over worked they where and didn't want to burden them. Thankfully he got better and heal 100%. Also have 2 different family members that work in big hospitals (one is head of something) and they have both told us as well that this is huge and to stay home. It is no joke folks and knowing your loved one probably died alone is heartbreaking beyond words. Don't take chances. You only have 1 life.

We are so sorry for your loss. We will keep her in our prayers. COVID-19 has affected many people around the world. It is a crazy time that we are living through right now. A couple of suggestions: I use a crochet hook to help me turn corners. Also, you could put a button on both sides of the ornament. You can hide final knot on button by wrapping the thread UNDER the button (around the threads) several times, make a loop, and go through the loop. To start, you will have to come up from the back and the angle the threaded need down the button hole towards the side so you don't go through to the back.

When I add or replace buttons, especially on heavier fabrics, I then bring the final thread to the front, underneath the button, then wind the thread around itself right underneath the button, then knot it right underneath and trim the tail. Then, you don't have a lump showing anywhere at the back because it's trimmed underneath the button at the front. If you look at jackets, especially at higher end ones, that's often how it's done if the buttons are affixed by hand.

My mum's tip for sewing buttons on anything is to use double strand thread, knot thread then thread button onto needle from back to the front, then through another hole back to the back of button & slip needle between the 2 strands of thread. Makes it so easy to get started & it also hides the knot. Hope that makes sense.

This is Marilyn my husband Chris died last month and I intend to make blue ornaments for his children and grandchildren from his ties so I will make this ornament double sided rather than plain on the back. My tip is to use ladder stitch to close the opening as it makes a much neater finish. This is one of the styles I intend to try. Thank you.

You might want to fidget a little with the ornament but you could just make the knot under the button. That is how I was taught.

I love this! You stated in the beginning that we can buy the pattern but at timestamp 2:17, you said there is also a free downloaded pattern available. I can't find it anywhere! I've taken notes of your tutorial which you present so well but I would really like the precise instructions in written form.
