@hulabiker21Ай бұрын
In a penny stove it’s a filler hole, but a penny stove is a sealed container, this has a screw lid, so you don’t need the hole to fill it. Maybe it’s a safety thing to ensure there’s a release mechanism if too much pressure builds up inside.
@FlintStrykerАй бұрын
@@hulabiker21 That would make sense. A safety valve of sorts in case the heat caused the internal pressure to rise too high. Maybe it has nothing to do with flame regulation. I have a Trangia. It is naturally vented at the bottom of the fuel well. Thank you!!
@wes326Ай бұрын
Allows the stove to pressurize so the vapors come out the holes?
@tballa8750Ай бұрын
It serves three functions. Firstly it is a hole that can be used to fill the stove with alcohol for fuel. It is faster than letting it cool so you can open it. Secondly, it acts as a simple way to light the stove by putting enough fuel in the divot to cause the rest of the fuel to boil. Thirdly, it acts as a pressure relief point. The bearing rests on the large hole and keeps pressure in the stove. Once the pressure builds it pushes the ball up just enough to keep the stove from exploding but still keep the jets pressurized.

Nice portable mini "stove"! And quite versatile too. Just watch out for any leaks/spills with alcohol, if you're using this kind of combustible. It could be (more) dangerous if there's no cotton filling on the inside.

@LastBushSurvival a good stuffing to add that will help make the stove burn more efficient would be brass or stainless wool. The coarse stuff like you see in a stainless scouring pad. Doesn't take up much room, adds heaps of thermal mass and helps spread out the fuel.

That’s a nice take on the penny store design. The pot stand looks a bit short for burner efficiency - what did you find? It’s limited to 3cm height to fit in the stove. Is the gap wide enough (does your pot bottom soot black )? Being an alcohol stove one still needs a windshield as part of the setup - you could bake one from foil. Other designs swap the pot stand for a windshield with integrated pot holders - eg xboil. I reckon this stove would work even better in an xboil wind shield.
@LastBushSurvivalАй бұрын
Thanks for the great feedback! I’m glad you liked the take on the penny stove design. As for the pot stand, I found that 3cm works well for burner efficiency without sacrificing portability. With the alcohol I used, the gap seems to be just the right size, and it didn’t cause any soot buildup on the pot bottom. I totally agree about the windshield, I’ll definitely try a foil windshield in the future, sounds like a great idea for improving the stove’s performance even more. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Since there are mini jerry cans, you could get one to carry the alcohol
@LastBushSurvivalАй бұрын
That’s true! I’ve been experimenting, and you can store the alcohol directly inside the stove. Here’s how: take another lid without holes (it fits perfectly on the bottom of the tin) and use it to seal the tin with the alcohol inside. The lid with the holes can then be placed on the bottom of the tin for storage. When you’re ready to use it, simply swap the lids. However, this method isn’t very practical if you’re storing the pot holder and steel ball inside the tin, as they would end up sitting in the alcohol.
@-joe90Ай бұрын
@LastBushSurvival Of course you can transport fuel in a container similar to that of the stove or any other type, I suggested the mini jerry can for a matter of fun and aesthetics of the miniature, greetings

It has multiple purposes, to cover the fill hole so the fuel pressure rises inside the can to push it out the side jets more, and if pressure rises too much, it'll vent out the hole under the ball by "burping". (It keeps it from getting over pressured and throwing flammable liquids everywhere). Shiny surface is not needed but it makes it look nicer.

My first alcohol stove was this basic design, except in Ti and pretty much fancy legs etc…. I sound it a pain in the butt, because it takes quite a long time for a flame that’s totally on top of the chamber to get hit enough for it to bloom, and during that time it blew out very easily. So if you make something like this, amd don’t plan on using it solely indoors, get yourself some integrated pot stand/wind break

I love the size and would definitely like one for budget camping, the issue I see here is that the bearing ball would be so noisy placed in a backpack. Maybe wrapping it in some cloth would help, since you can use the cloth as a potholder for hot things, like a stowing away the searing hot bearing ball, or the metal handle of the camping mug. Also silences the ball when stored.

There is a lot of slight-of-hand in these videos. I am going to make this one, although I suspect it will not actually work (just like the other one doesn't). Trickery in this video notice so far: When he test fits the stand peice in the container, that's nto either half of the actual container. OK, just noticed, the tins he's using are not the same ones in the link he provides, so it's the same tin he's using not the tin he says to order. When he wraps the aluminum can around the stand peices to for a joint, he's doing something to make it stay there that he's not showing us. Notice how he wraps the aluminum and tghen the video cuts, and then he let's go? He provide a link to 7mm bearings, which he initially uses and then switches to a smaller bearing in the video. Why provide the link to something you don't use? After I make this I'll post back here what I found. I am not optomistic. OK, I made it and tested it. The result were... OK. It technically works. It boiled a cup very similar or maybe identical to the one in the video in about 8 minutes, but... The stand is the weak point. It can barely support the cup with the water in it and the flames make the metal wire in the stand glow and get even weaker. My cup fell just as it started boiling because the stand failed. I do like the size and for boiling a single cup of water it works. Best of all it seems like it would fit in a US milspec canteen pouch pocket. I don't know if it could boil a 1 Qt canteen cup I am certain the stand could not support a canteen cup full of water.
