Love your videos Billy. In South Africa, the rule I was taught was the less, "jewelry" the cheaper and the better the rig. For anything that is possibly going to bite us off (like sharks), we would make the bottom part of that first rig with a 120lb or 150lb 7 strand coated wire. The wire and heavy mono sections are joined with two sets of figure 8 knots that are pulled up against each other. Again this makes the rig cheaper vs it all being from wire and improves free movement in the water.

What a lot of people do in South Africa, for the big sharks run wire all the way through and just use mono for the lead line. They call it an MFG, this stands for full metal jacket. Follow the link to this video. It's probably what you need! 49 strand wire is the best you can use, it's very easy to work with. But if you can't get that seven strand will do! Most people will use 200 lb wire, for the MFG.

Gave this rig a go a couple of weeks ago, bass fishing over a bit of local mixed ground. The full strength 70lb rig length to an octopus style hook with a dingle dangle on it, a 15lb lead line (i use 0.38mm 24lb Asso mono mainline) really helped when getting the lead snagged a couple of times. Great rig with an inbuilt rotten-bottom, pulled for a break losing only the lead. What was mostly impressive though was the fact it flew so straight and stable through the air with a mackerel head and guts bait on it hooked through the lips👍👌👍 1 bass at just over 4lb, a thornback at 7lb and few schoolies. I was well chuffed

@@Billyfishing_watch Gave the up and over rig a go, as i like to fish with baits close to the bottom, and use fixed up and over rigs with 3ft (ish) snoods quite a lot. But it was the South African style rig i used in the end, as the spot i fished is mixed ground with big thick mud ledges and can always lose a few rigs. Made them with 15lb lead link and use 24lb Asso mainline so that was the weak link. Both work brilliantly though, especially with chunkier baits.

Perfect 👌 I was thinking of something like this to try and catch a Tope from the shore in my village where no one has, we used to get loads just offshore as kids so don't see why not. I didn't like the idea of standard paternoster type rig, rather have it straight and flat like up+over. I'll go hook to bite trace to a big ass swivel in place of ring, then snood👍

@@Billyfishing_watch I think so too, I'll make a scaled down prototype and test on rays because even half a joey won't stay on the clip for me with my standard u+o and I need at least that to stop the whiting horde violating my baits. Now I just need a tip to prevent the seals stealing all my mackerel off the hooks before I get them in, hooked around 20 macks this morning, landed 6.5 swearing at them with hand gestures had no effect, not even in Welsh 😡

Boy...you kids on that side of the pond use a lot of "Bling" on your lines. Those rigs would work here in Virginia but never where I grew up. Way to many snags, rocks, misc. "eat your gear" features on the bottom. But....I get a kick out of watching your vids One of these days I'll try fishing a few of those rigs down here. Another great video Billy very informative. About the South African rig the only thing that I would change to make it a one true piece line would be by adding Carolina keepers, instead of the 2 knots above and below the pulley rig which makes it a weaker line. Carolina Keepers are plastic pieces with a slit cut through the middle which used to keep beads and swivels from sliding around. If you get a chance look them up. We here in the West coast of California use Dropper loops or Reverse Drooper Loops. Thanks again for sharing something interesting and new to me.

Again just awesome conntent..South african fishing has changed my angling from low mount fixed spool the dingle dangles to using circular hooks..They are are quite far ahead of other continents when it comes to surfcasting with their inovations..do you mainly use the up and over rig and do you also always use the snell for joining hook length to circular hooks even wire for Toope an dshark?? What Lbs mono are you using to tie wire to mono.. I have having the issue of 90lb afw 49 strand wire cutting through 100lbs Rovex 10x mono as I am tightening the knot. I have tried tying using the knot you have mentioned and back to back figure of 8 knots. I am wondering if that size mono is too light and low in diameter for 90-150lb wire.

It's the line, the knot is fine. Rovex is rubbish!

@@craigwheaton2506 you don't need to be the best caster in the world. All you need to do is get the lead off the ground. Then these novelty items they sell in tackle shops, become useless! I will link a video for you, there are some simple explanations on how to get that sinker in the air, so you don't have to waste more of your hard earned money. The reason the baits uncilp, is because of the rig, and the casting style.
