Man, Bjorn is ecstatic at the end there =)

Bjorn Lomborg is a first rate charlatan. Do a bit of research on him. He's a paid shill for industry and he has a well-worn schtick as the "skeptical environmentalist". There's a ton of people way more credible than this guy. He's just good at self-promoting a contrarian message. It's regrettable Jordan Peterson has fallen for this guy. He's a total fraud.

@@Cspacecat what he says is actually a flip side of coin. He agrees that climate change is an issue but what he says is that when you have got way many problems to solve then you have to go to economist to decide priorities. A virologist thinks virus as big issue and needed to be treated first but an environmentalist thinks environment as bigger issue so then you decide on basis of return and investment basis, and also you really need to think of long term plans. Invest more on things which benefit you for long term.

@@Cspacecat With an organization of 300+ economists and researchers working on this project....how is it that you can lay the criticism on Lomborg himself? You think all those people are just Lomborg's puppets? As far as data is concerned....of course not all data is equally valid or useful. Some decisions have to be made as to what to include. Also, as he said....there are bound to be errors in the analysis because they're trying to come up with some conclusions based on the information that is available and, as more is learned or becomes known, they will have to update their analysis and, as is usual in economics, assumptions are part of the equation. So, of course, the conclusions are questionable. I'm sure there are a lot of questions about it but....that doesn't mean the process has no value. It's easy to sit back and criticize. Much harder to prove that you have something better to offer. What have you got?

@@Cspacecat "With 8.8 million scientists and 7.5 million engineers in the world, 300+ is a rather minuscule number." Yes indeed. But it's safe to say that most of those scientists and engineers are working on local problems defined by their employers. They're not investigating the global, or even national, question of how to create the most good for the least amount of money, unlike the 300+ people who are working on this project. "This kind of blows up Lomborg's ideas." Which idea does this blow up? You mean like this one? ...at the 1:09:52 mark where he says that they did a world climate consensus with 27 of the world's top climate economists and determined that "The *by far* best investment to tackle global warming is to invest in green R&D"...as opposed to increasing taxes on non-renewable energy, which mostly hurts the poor, or just telling people they have to use less energy. And then he told the whole whale oil story. Or...did you not actually watch the entire presentation? That sounds like he'd very much support your idea regarding Quaise etc. Agreed...no one group is going to have all of the information and they need to constantly re-evaluate their priority list based on the latest available information. Lomborg even admitted at 1:24:10 that "this is the best we know now....it's probably not entirely true but it's better than anything else we have right now." To that point...looking at the Quaise website...it appears the company only launched in 2020 whereas this presentation is from 2018. So....again.....seems like you need to give Lomborg and their organization some more credit. I watched a news story not long about about another company who is revisiting a geothermal exploration project in the mountains not far from Whistler, BC. Would be great to see some positive and practical developments come from geothermal. That said....it's not the entire story. Generating electricity is one thing. How you distribute it, capture it and turn it into devices and products we can use is another thing. We need some much better solutions on the battery side of the equation that help avoid the nasty environmental effects from all of that mineral mining etc. People are working on that as well....so hopefully we'll see some progress in that area before long.

@FalconPunch827 I've been trying to figure that out myself because it's such a new thing to learn. But I would say from the internships I did, the most skills needed in this space are mostly related to data and statistical analysis. So start with database software like openLCA, be familiar with SQL or Oracle then try to build useful models for say, energy generation vs demand in a certain area. Personally, I chose to go even further to study Bitcoin mining and blockchain technology that will hopefully enable us to build decentralized marketplaces for renewable energy.

@@Bamskki Fascinating. I don't understand this sustainability philosophy. What exactly are we running out of?
@Bamskki
@Bamskki 5 жыл бұрын
@@Frank22164 Mostly running out energy since we have a finite amount of highly efficient energy resources which are fossil fuels. Even if you want to go solar you're going to have to use a huge amount of fossil fuels to build the infrastructure needed to make solar panels and sell them like extracting silicon, transportation, factories, and you can go infinitely far beyond that and say we need to spend energy for the datacenters and banks to run businesses and marketplaces. An example of a sustainability study is the Life-Cycle Assessment which is a case study to compare two options of say, a typical 500ml beer bottle. The packaging could be made of aluminium or of PET (PolyEthylene Terephthalate). Both options do not look the same, but have the same function: contain and protect the precious beverage. So then you have to use huge sets of data to analyze their environmental impact. If you want to go deeper into the philosophy of sustainability you have to be familiar with the second law of thermodynamics which states that entropy (chaos) is always increasing and we are running out of order that has been built up by the sun for millions of years and we need to find a way to preserve it and extract more of it out of the sun in an efficient way.

I don’t normally comment on videos, but I feel that it is important for me to share my thoughts. It is hard for me to comprehend, let alone put in words how much respect I have for dr Peterson, I’m not even sure the words exist. He is an inspiration to me personally, and I hope he inspires many others. He is one of those rare people that is truly selfless, with sincerely altruistic ambitions. I believe he says his goal is something like “to help as many people as possible in as short a time as possible” and I hope and believe he is and will continue to be successful in his mission. Interactions like this one, are a great example of his character, he has met a man with similar goals to his own and wants nothing more than to help him achieve those goals. He also has an uncanny ability to condense complicated ideas into concepts that anyone can follow. He has not only taught me how I could be a better person, but inspires me to be one. Maybe if I keep on paying attention to him, one day I will be the kind of person that might inspire someone else in a similar way. Thank you dr Peterson. Thank you for all that you do.

Jordan was absolutely right when he said that this is not boring, and this is incredibly exciting! I feel like I was listening to a secret conversation where the world's brightest are talking about the biggest and brightest and most important ideas. This kind of conversation has been bubbling inside me and around in my thoughts, and to finally hear it spoken is incredibly motivating for someone like me. I finally feel like, "Yeah this is where we find out how to fix the most important problems! This is where we find out how to do the most good!" This kind of conversation has been trickling slightly above and beneath my conscious thought, and I am really glad to not only have found a conversation like this but to be introduced to someone who can provide more information on the topics discussed. JP has done us a wonderful service here to provide us with such a conversation, and the conversation is so good and so important that I feel like I should pay for it. And I would wholeheartedly pay for it if I had to, but the fact that it is just a free video that JP provides on his page that has showed up in my feed is nothing short of miraculous because I guess it must be the product of living in a western society that makes me think that something as wonderful as this should come with a price tag. But it does not, and that is f'ing miraculous. God bless you, JP!

The intellectual activity is great. And the more informed people are, the better guided our societal decisions will be.
@winniethedung
@winniethedung 5 жыл бұрын
@@GrubKiller436 Yeah this is the first time I have seen a discussion like this where two obviously well educated people are talking about the big problems facing our countrie(s)/planet/society, and it really hit me at my core because I love to philosophize about things like this and not only think about what the actual problems are that need addressing but how to best address them. I am lacking in educational background but during the past 10 years when when I could have been in a University, I have been finding out who I really am as a person, and thanks to teachers, mentors, monks, and shaman, I have arrived at the person I am today. And that is not to say I will not arrive again at another stage in my life or once a year for the rest of my life because the growing and learning process never really ends. And also thanks to people like Jordan Peterson; Joe Rogan Podcasts; the psychedelic community, Rick Doblin and MAPS (Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies); Gabor Mate; Alan Watts; Terence Mckenna and there are a lot of good people alive and dead out there that help develop my philosophical and intellectual ideas. Of course now that I have a good part of myself figured out, I should be able to sift through a lot of the bs in the universities and ask the kind of questions that will help me learn the most, and get the most out of the university experience when the time comes for me to enroll. Like JP says, you have to aim at something. My aim is at psychedelic therapy which combines the two things I am most passionate about. Marijuana is making good progress through the states here in the US, MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for treatment-resistant PTSD is on its way to becoming a legal treatment in (estimated) 2021. Psilocybin, the main psychoactive ingredient in magic mushrooms, has just recently had some promising progress as a treatment for depression I think, and might be available as a treatment in the US sometime around 2021. Of course it is hard to predict when these things become legal and usually with a lot of things in life, our estimated dates that we think things will happen usually end up happening later than we would like, so those dates are just rough estimates but the best we have for now. So to bring this back to the video we are commenting on, my resources are going toward mental health, and this is based on my own passion and intuitive approach to life. And I am less educated than JP and his fellow speaker so I find it hard to debate why exactly my passion is so important, and why exactly is passion so important? I like the speaker's and what seems like his own intuitive approach, method of figuring out what is important. And I trust an intuitive approach if your heart is in the right place, but obviously an intuitive approach by our US president, DT, will be way different than my own or JP's or the speaker's. In conclusion, I really like listening to JP and other great people and speakers because they help me think aloud what I think on the inside but can not articulate correctly. So I could speak about why it feels good to do the things that I do but JP could give an amazing conversation/speech/essay about why it is not only important but essential in moving humanity forward and living better as a humanity and make it make sense and have a debate that really makes a lot of sense. JP has admittedly said that he meticulously attacks his arguments and words and looks for holes and the best possible words to fit what he is trying to say, and that is so beautiful to someone like me who holds a lot of the same sentiments but can not articulate it so beautifully and tactfully as he can. I am less about arguing and debate and more about speaking truth to people that connects with them on a deep level to get them to change a negative behavior or thought pattern. So I know I will get better at arguing and debate as I start on my path through a university and such but right now, just like I am in this comment reply, I am throwing my ideas out there, readily to be scrutinized and argued about and see if they gain traction or momentum. So anything good or bad you or anyone else has to say is always welcome, and I spoke a lot about myself and how I feel so feel completely free to speak about how you feel in the current moment or in general. God bless JP because people like him just like the people I mentioned in an earlier paragraph are heroes of mine and a lot of people here, and when they succeed we succeed, so we have to look out for our heroes and make sure they stay healthy and are always learning and are in a good place even if it involves lots of struggle and hardships. I worry about things like JP getting enough sleep and such, but idk, I just want the people I look up to to stay sharp and do their best because JP and others are succeeding for the rest of us and allowing us to follow in their footsteps. So God bless JP, and God bless you, T'was an old username and I'll change it soon. , for allowing me to get this out and say what I needed to say. Thanks!

Thank you Jordan and Bjorn. I am a co-founder of an ngo in the Pacific and I have raised a considerable amount of Development/Aid funds in my time. My impression of both donors and recipient institutions is that there's an unwillingness to delve into the cost effectiveness of interventions because of the identity built around those interventions. This is not only organisational identity but the identity of those who find purpose leading and working in them. Similarly, funders are swept up in the stories that make for good 'optics' rather than those that can do the most good. As a leader I have personally had to really assess what it is we are trying to achieve and whether that which has defined us until this point, is really serving the ultimate purpose of doing the most good. I bear witness to a system that fails to build local capacity and instead instills a donor mentality that stifles development. These conversations are important and I hope many listen. Jordan I hope to discuss them quickly with you in Canberra at the meet and greet.

THIS IS HONESTLY SUCH A GODLY INTERVIEW. Holy hell, that really was eye opening and exciting to listen to. Bjorn and his team are fucking amazing. Makes me wish I had taken political science over Ba.CS. But Jesus Christ, if there were a god. Bjorn and his team would be doing his god damn work. I applaud this fucking message, I always felt that Climate Change political hysteria was so mad and out there. Wish they'd follow along the wills of this particular academic research. Rather than the usual political bull-jive. (Saying that, yes ignorance is probably the biggest factor as to why it's not used. Never really knew this perspective fully, but always contemplated the ideal of raising those out of extreme poverty to be one of societies biggest front-line issues, I always thought that raising those 'stuck at 0' would raise the bandwidth of potential intelligence across humanity necessitated by the eventual economic progression brought about by that growth in economic productivity individually like how Bjorn talked about. It truly makes me marvel at the idea of 3rd World Countries being lifted towards eventual 1st World status and how truly good that would be. In the last 3 decades China and India are true exemplars of such growth, raising hundreds of millions from starvation to quintessentially having food, the essential (imo) diet of choice. I end this interview feeling rather excited / wanting to push this message forward. Will show to some of my friends, who are 1000000% pro-Climate Change. As a peripheral problem, this leads me to half-jokingly wonder about how this rise in prosperity would bring on the new-age crisis of the West/East existential problems and especially as to how would it look like in the moment the trend shifts from the theological ethos to the 'rationale' logos (or to the extent as to how dissimilar it will be with the West) and more so on what the West will look like. Will we be shrouded by tyranny or will we shed our scaled eyes. Makes my fantasies run wild... I'll get back to coding. Future is exciting but scary.

Being an Infection Preventionist in a large hospital, I can tell you that Pareto distribution charts are widely used and great tools for deciding what problems to solve first when finite resources (e.g. time, money, manpower etc.,) are limited. Additionally, since taking a graduate level economics class, all of the theories and ideas Bjorn Lomborg is espousing (as far as the macro ideas of discovering greatest bang for the buck) are pretty much par for the course. So as a general and non-inflammatory statement meant only for the purposes of discussion, I find that most individuals extremely concerned with solving climate change at all costs tend to lean more to the left. I used to be far left. That being said, it is amazing how many values/ideas they cling to that are completely contradictory to their other beliefs. Since we were on the topic of economics, I'll use this example. The support of Obama by the left is extreme. Obama and other democrats are huge proponents of the globalization of trade [Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP)] . The point behind globalizing trade is to bring competition into the free market. This competition forces domestic companies to produce better goods more efficiently. This means reduced costs to the consumer on domestic goods. This helps contain the Consumer Price Index (CPI) which is utilized a a measurement for inflation. So where does the contradiction occur? well, Also, Obama and other democrats constantly push for greatly increased minimum wage. Mostly what I read suggests they want it around $10.00 - $15.00/hr. When you increase minimum wage, the business has to increase costs to the consumer or face going out of business which in turn increases a nation's CPI. Democrats need to decide whether they want to increase minimum wage or decrease inflation through global competition. As far as I can tell, you cannot do both, especially unnaturally and in a significantly short period of time. This piques my interest as to whether politicians like Obama are extreme idiots, or are they intentionally trying to create a system, for ideological purposes, that completely destroys the free market capitalism of America for the purposes of being able to institute a totalitarian government that utilizes socialism to fuel their agenda of control.

1:21:32 It is such a wholesome wonderful moment. How Lomborg gets excited about that what he has been doing isn’t boring. On the other hand it shows some kind of disconnect between him and the actual solutions that he is proposing. Because if you believe that, his work could have an impact on the world, why would you believe it is boring? So I am seeing Lomborg disconnected from putting his work into reality rather than just theorizing. Good thing that he connected to the good ol’ pragmatic, strong Dr. Peterson terminated to translate good theories into reality.

All humans are valuable in what sense exactly. I bring this up because when you try to measure the cost-benefit of allowing more migration (which is in the chart), you ought to understand that not all humans are productive enough to the point where they are "valuable" to the country they migrate to.
@GrubKiller436

Even the dumbest person can do something. But I'm not sure if it's particularly about economic effect or intellectual prowess or whatever. Maybe they are valuable just because they are living beings. And if we are responsible for them, we could try to help them. But I think most people have at least one thing they're good/effective at. Okay, but whether or not we should tighten or loosen our borders for migration is sort of a slightly different discussion. So it's like, *yes* some people do have value if they were to be in our country. But it's a slightly different thing to say that they should automatically be allowed here. Additionally, the people who are not productive... we still should occasionally attempt to help them if they are, and I say this loosely, 'our responsibility.'

This is a normal engineering approach for economic justification, and not something new other than applying it to world problem prioritization. In one phase of my career as a chemical engineer, we were expected to identify all competing potential investments, and generate an expected rate of return on investment (i.e. IRR with probabilities) in order to rank capital expenditures from a limited pool of funds. And where data is soft, a qualitative approach is still valid as long as probabilities/confidence is adjusted properly. I loved this video and am actually astonished this is a unique approach globally! I would have loved to be the one to throw my engineering thinking into a lot of Jordan's videos.

Dr Lomborg did a really great work. However some of the points should be discussed according to me : 1) taking money as the ultimate metric of good. It would be great to have, in addition of the objectives ranked by financial value, a ranking of lives saved and a ranking of a metric of well-being if there are some, all of that using the same rigorous method as for the ranking by money. I think the three aspects are complementary. For example, one of the top priorities of the money ranking is decreasing tariffs, which would not save anyone : so according to your aim, the best investments won't be the same. 2) the mentionned study on the financial effects of global warming seems quite limited : if I understand correctly, it takes into account only the effects of rising temperatures over the 21st century. But : a- global warming would go on far after the end of the century, so the additive effects over time should be taken into account b- climate change is not only restricted to temperature. It will also induce desertification, floodings, hurricanes, heat waves, rising sea levels, ocean acidification, coral reef death, etc. By the way, this last point is considered in the ranking and is an investment almost as good as curing HIV or malaria. So adding all the consequences of climate change will drive hundreds of millions of people into misery. Invest in climate right now would lessen this huge cost in the future. c- in addition to climate change, we could consider all the additional damage done to the ecosystems (pollution, fragmentation, destruction, overexploitation, etc.). The loss of all the related ecosystem services (pollination, water cleaning, pest fighting among the most serious ones, or reservoir of scientific knowledge, gene diversity and well-being among the less financially ratable ones). There is a huge litterature on this subject, I just add a few link if you want to take a first glimpse : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecosystem_services ; web.archive.org/web/20131203005715/www.unep.org/maweb/documents/document.356.aspx.pdf d- some investments in environment are really cheap, or even beneficial by themselves : for example, a car which consumes less fuel than an other one comes often at the same prize ; not using car for small travels, turning off the light and not wasting water is not only good for the environment, but also for your wallet. So taking all of that into account, environment protection is likely to be a far better investment than said in the video.

Thank you Dr. Peterson for bringing this up. It actually puts me in a little bit of a festive mood, now close to Christmas with these good steps in a productive direction. Merry Christmas and have a happy new year to you and all your family!
