How to make wire armatures for stop motion

You could imagine I don't make to much wire armatures as I always show my ball and socket making... but, trust me, most of our stop motion shorts and commercials use to have simple armatures as they are quick to make and work perfect.
Yes they are something you must know how to make if you want to make a stop motion movie so I want to share with you the way I make them.

I don't make puppets but I do make wire armatures. I already was helped by this man in a previous video when he used a drill to twist wire. I adapted an electric screw driver to do the same thing and it is brilliant. But now I see a couple of other things he does that will be useful. Like drawing the shape amd then measuring the wire against it. also, connecting the thicker wire with thinner wire at cross sections.

This is amazing advise on making a Armatures, or starting base of a stop motion puppets, though I am no professional, this method is horrendously cheap and why buying higher grade skeletons are better as it’s easier to design. For those who are starting into stop animation, as much as this sounds silly but Lego is absolutely a more sturdy and cheaper alternative… the wire base is perfect for background characters in shots, but very difficult if using the twist method… Besides my own personal opinion I recommend this method for basic design ideas on what your final piece is going to be.

Great tutorial! Do you have any other recommendation as a rigging point? For the feet you had lighting fittings, which I can imagine you could also use as a rigging point I guess?

You can use the feet to screw to the table for a walk. And for rigging points depends on your script, if it needs to be in a chair you could use a nut to fix on a chair, etc.

What size is the brass tubing and aluminum wire that you used? I'm so nervous about finding the right size for my puppet, which is 10 inches.

I would pick 1,6 mm twisted aluminium for the body, and you could use 3,96mm and 4,76mm tube, it would be easy for you to insert the wire and glue it. Take a look at kineticarmatures for those products. Thanks!!

+ edu puertas- Fabricar armaduras no fue tan facil para mi por ese momento cuando las vi por primera vez pense en comprar una online o buscarla en una tienda pero la verdad esto no es tan sencillo ya que son costosas y en mi pais ni las venden. Me senti frustrado porque era lo que buscaba hace mucho tiempo en una figura y para mi esto era la perfeccion total y lo bien que se pueden animar!!Lo unico que me surgio fue la idea de hacerlas yo mismo pero me dije :¿Como?, ¿Donde? se consiguen esas piezas tan complejas y pense rendirme porque era imposible hayarlas es mas fui a una ferreteria ya como son de acero crei que piezas parecidas se hallaban alli pero me equivoque no habia nada que me las figurara. Definitivamente me dije a mi mismo: No, no y no se puede!! pero mi s ganas de hacerlas eran tan grandes que no cedia a dejarlo en el olvido porque si, porque no se puede analizando y viendo mas videos fabulosos entendi que si se pueden hacer ,en casa y que no necesitas grandes y complejas maquinas para lograrlos fue asi como tome herramientas en mi casa y empece a caer muchas veces y muchas me levante,segui escudrinando videos,fotos y toda informacion de google y youtube hasta que encontre maneras aun mas sencillas de hacer armaduras y fui a unos locales comerciales en mi ciudad y vi cosas muy interesantes,economicas y que me iban a restar mucho tiempo fue asi como logre iniciar un proyecto increible,sencillo,facil y sin gastar tanto tiempo es genial!!Esto tambien lo hago para comercializar pero es mas hobby que nada,por otra parte para lo del casting va a ser mi segundo reto en el cual puedo fallar pero hay que experimentar y saber que sucede ahora si dices que trabajar la espuma de latex es un poco complejo igual el latex liquido creo que intentare con la silicona que tengo haber que sucede.Pienso hacer los moldes y averiguar como le puedo hacer para el latex!! Hay que investigar mas pero buen video gracias por ensenarnos de este arte de la animacion.

I use and sell bare aluminium at different thickness. I find that this material works fine for me, sometimes I convine with coper, but you can work with it in 2 or 3 twists. If you don't mark the wire in construction with the pliers it lasts 15 to 20 folds which is ok for some shots. kineticarmatures.com/product/wire/

Yes it is the way, I normally make a hole smaller than the square and then I make it square with a file.

Hi Edu, what's the name of the product you mix at the min 5:58 ?? Is that also the same glue that one can use for the tip of the fingers in the armature? so the fingers are not sharp and won't damage the silicone if you cast it.

this is Epoxiic glue, 2 components, there are a lot of brands and strenghts. You can use it for the tips of the fingers but I normally use epoxic putty, a kind of clay made of epoxic, also 2 components that harden with the time

Cuando se trabaja con alambre resulta muy rapido,barato e ingenioso,usualmente se usan estas armaduras para esculpir en masilla epoxica,masa fria,plastecina,arcilla, la famosa espuma( foam latex,rubber foam)etc en mi caso yo estoy usandolas para escultura y hago las armaduras ball and socket para hacer personajes en silicona ! .Ya tengo varias armaduras y las respectivas esculturas para hacer los moldes y luego el casting en silicona,tambien tengo latex liquido no se si usarlo y como me quedaran porque tengo entendido que toca hornear el latex encambio la silicona si se deja a temperatura ambiente hasta el dia siguiente pero como hare los moldes en latex no se que hacer ahi o usar la silicon para el molde y el.latex para el muneco mmmmm bueno en fin me encantan todas estas cosas tambien me gusta lo del escenario para stop motion,el software las camaras tripodes y todo eso que usan ustedes es casi como lo que usan los actores cuando hacen capitulos de series novelas peliculas etc todo ambientado pero la verdad a mi me queda dificil y se me dificulta un poco aunque debe haber un modo casero de hacerlo y tambien me gustaria hacer un canal y mostrar lo que llevo hecho por ejemplo estos dias hice unas armaduras de unas criaturas de star wars que vi en google fotos las recree y me salieron geniales y la verdad me ha salido economico y funcionan bien y lo mas importante no se gasta mucho tiempo haciendolas practicamente manual no uso maquinas solamente la lima unos pegamentos y lo otro es ingenio mio yo mire cosas que fueran similares y las aplique y me parecio increible que funcionen jjjj el resultado impecable como si fueran profesionales como las que haces tu.

El latex espumado es muy complicado de trabajar, lo ideal es usar horno.... si no tienes el equipo adequado no te lo recomiendo. Yo te animo a compartir lo que haces, reconozco que hacer videos es mucho trabajo pero puedes publicar las fotos en las redes sociales y así la gente opinará, a veces te ayuda a notar cierta compañia o apoyo. Sea como sea, te tiene que apetecer.

La única opción que te puede servir gratis es la aplicación para telefono o tablet Android o OS, Stop Motion Studio. Es gratis y puedes capturar desde la camara de tu telefono o de la tablet. Sinó puedes usar la versión de prueba de dragonframe un tiempo.

+edu puertas - Amigo edu, siempre he sido fiel a tus videos y ya he tratado con foam latex (Espuma de latex) y no es para nada complejo,es super sencillo hacer personajes con el, yo no entiendo cual es lo complejo del asunto porque yo trabajo asi:Algunos de los personajes que construyo son cabeza,manos y pies en silicona o en caucho de silicona y el cuerpo en espuma de latex recubierto con una fibra cedosa para la piel, otro metodo es crear escultura, hacer molde y hacer finalmente el casting en silicona,sin embargo antes de poner la armadura dentro del molde suelo proteger con foal latex y ya esta, depende como tu quieras hacerla.El latex liquido es genial,pero tengo entendido que debe hornearse,la silicona que uso es la de pegar vidrios y esa seca sola,y el resultado es sorprendente.
