Like other people in the comments, I'd be really interested in seeing what properties change with twisted wire. So how 3mm aluminium compares to three strands of 1mm twisted together. Not just looking at breaking points, but also how easy they are to bend and how well they hold a position. I'd make the video myself but I don't have your cool machines.

Awesome and well put together video! I personally use galvanized steel because it's cheap, I can get it at my local construction shop and it works for my needs. I'm sure I'll buy Aluminium wire in the future for important armatures and stuff :)

Great video! Thank you so much for doing this. If you could experiment one more time showing the difference between twisting wire and not twisting it as that seems to be the greatest debate when it comes to wire within the community. I know so many more professional animators who say not to twist write as it not only makes it weaker but it also produces a spring by twisting it so then it had greater memory which as you say in your video you do not want. Thank you once again for all of your inventiveness!

Hola Edu : Me ha parecido entender que el alambre que más usas es el de 1,6mm. Supongo que lo usas para el tronco y las piernas. Sin embargo no aguanta más de 38 dobleces, según tu test. El de 1mm aguanta más del doble ¿ Acaso no sería más recomendable ? El problema está en saber si cada vez que un personaje realiza un movimiento, como un paso, equivale a una doblez, o depende tanto o más del ángulo al que es sometido. 6 a 12 frames por segundo, son muchos movimientos para un corto de quizás 10 minutos (3600-7200) ¿De verdad puede un muñeco aguantar todo un corto ? Entiendo que al usar doble hilo trenzado, la duración y la fuerza ha de ser mayor, pero esto no quita que son muchos movimientos, y, tampoco es lo mismo que el cable de una polea que se compone de un trenzado de multitud de hilos de acero; estos le dan mayor resistencia y flexibilidad, pero no nos sirve porque no se aguanta más que a plomo.

Buenas, según el diámetro aguantará distinto, de ahí el interés del test. Debería hacer lo mismo con trenzados como me han comentado ya. El de 1 aguanta más dobleces pero no es tan fuerte, así que no lo uso para piernas. Sobre lo de los frames, cada paso de una pierna, aunque sean 12 frames equivale a una doblez, no a 12. Así que dependerá del guión si aguanta o no el corto entero, pero para determinados puppets sirve

This is a GREAT video bud! Could I request a further experimentation with your device? Bending tests with twisted aluminium and aluminium & copper mixed wires of different tensions (at 1:32 you show the ruler displaying the shrinkage as the wire is twisted) I have a theory the tighter and more twists per cm the more likely the wire is to break due to the aluminium being under strain from twisting and pressured at the twist cross over. Also that the copper might actually help support the aluminium? It would be interesting to find out using your device if my theory's are right or if I'm talking total hogwash lol

Also, also, perhaps some experimentation with bending wires that have been shrink wrapped or covered in cotton thread, I hear people say they help prelong breakage and the fingers on the old rex puppet from 2012 do still flex (just) but I'm curious was it the cotton wrapping technique that helped or the aluminium wire itself (was it a better version than my current suppler?)

I thought about testing more options, but you know it took me more than I expected. I agree with you that too much twisting must be bad, should test it to be sure. I also had the doubt if I was going too far away with this experiment but I found interesting to test it for real not by feeling. If I have time I'll do it

Thanks for video :) I have a question: 1.6mm aluminum wire was broken in 38th bend and 1mm in 93th bend. So why we don't use this 1mm wire for the legs, too? I understand that there is a need for thickness for the leg, but wouldn't it be longer than 1mm folded by 4 folds instead of 1.6 folded by 2 folds? Or does the long life observed in one piece 1mm decrease when we fold it to 4? (makes it fragile?) thanks.

True is that multiple variables could occur in that test. Apart from lifetime its also the feeling using different thicknesses. I like thicker for legs

Is there anything that we should look for as far as weight or gauge that we might use as a guide or are we just at the mercy of the manufacturer. For instance are there specific questions we can ask to insure the tinsel strength etc. ?

I couldn’t find “armature wire” at any of my local store but they had “aluminum wire” but it was from the hardware section. So I picked some up, got into my car and was reading the back of it and it was covered in warning labels stating that it has lead in it and that it’ll cause cancer. I kind of don’t even want to use it.

@@edupuertasfruns Idk if it’s better or not, but I was certainly surprised at how long it holds up in longer standing increments. I was using 1/8” diameter for testing. But what gave me the idea was that since solder wire becomes solid again after it cools, I thought it might retain it’s structural integrity after each movement. As long as you aren’t doing a lot of extreme bends in a short amount of time, it should last a while since the wire essentially re-sets when left alone. Anyways best of luck- I enjoy all your videos 🦾🦿
