In the past 6 months I have been upgrading my bedroom with a new duvet, pictures in frames, a new nightstand and a new rug. It's definitely achieved a more peaceful feel. But what makes it feel the best is the 5 minutes (at most) I take in the morning to make the bed. I forget how just 5 - 15 minutes a day in different parts of the house can make a difference between a cluttered or dirty room to a peaceful room.

100%!! An unmade bed makes the best bedroom look like a mess. And if you go with a duvet, making the bed is SUPER easy. It really doesn't take much to make your bed if it's just straightening the sheets and pulling up the duvet and throwing your sham pillows back on the bed.
@bethiciaprasek1008 Жыл бұрын
A lazy way...because I suffer from depression or just laziness (mostly Winter)…top the bed with a sheet or quilt at night and keep it made underneath. 😃 Sometimes in the dark days of Winter, I can sleep even better due to the extra bedding cushioning below and just throw the covering in its hidey hole during the day...even better if I can fluff once a day before bed in the dryer and wash once per week during times when things get a bit down. I know 5-15 minutes doesn't seem like much, but sometimes it is 5-15 minutes you cannot invest elsewhere. Feeding pets, showering, driving by McD for breakfast, emailing someone to handle a task for you. Saying a little prayer. I also am improving my bedroom and have already started (great thing about the happier Summer days). A new quilt, pulling out those nice sheets from storage, seeing if I can remove/relocate some of the items stored in my bedroom so I can set the sitting area up again. (Storage in bedroom saved $$ but isn't ideal over a storage unit...sellable merchandise (part of a business), so not items to just trash/donate). Just a thought for others who may hit life struggles which temporarily keep them feeling making a bed is too much hassle, but with time and the practice of seeing it so nice will get back from that temporary time of not having the energy while not losing the peace a made bed affords. I hope this helps someone.

@@crystalrowan It isn't that difficult to make a bed with sheets, and a blanket either. I despise the obligatory big puffy duvet. If you buy good sheets, pillows and blankets you don't need the shams. The bed will look beautiful.

Easiest tip: Make your bed + put your clothes away (dirty and clean)! Those two simple acts really make a room feel upgraded. I always tell my teenage children that if they spent 1 minute making their bed, it would really help to make their room feel cleaner. And also, put your dirty clothes into a container of some kind. I bought a cheap, woven basket at TJ Maxx to put my clothes into at the end of the day so that I didn’t have to just put them on the floor. It really helps!

Valet chairs are awesome for tidying up if you have few "half worn" garments and only few pieces of jewelry in active duty at any one time. Imo it looks better than an open rack and there's far less of a resistance to put things on the chair; to the extend many people have just a regular chair that has been consumed by The Pile

Truly.. it can probably not be stated enough. The making of one's bed carries more importance than JUST design style. The psychological impact of making one's bed sets the stage for one's entire day. When I was struggling with depression YES it was an effort to get that chore done.. but once done the feeling of accomplishment helped to break that sense of inertia.. I adopted the 'DO JUST One thing" approach.. and then you get to do JUST One thing... again. The success of a Made Bed carries a lot more power than some realize. Hope that makes some sense.

I do the same thing with blankets. I with you on this. I have a good-sized bedroom, and I have a cedar chest at the foot of the bed in which I keep be and bath linens. And it definitely gets used as seating too. I also have a small easy chair and ottoman in a reading nook. (I'm quite short, so a diminutive chair works for me.) I use it pretty much every day. Could you be so kind to explain for non-americans/non-native-speakers what's the difference between a duvet and a blanket? I googled, but i dont get it.
@susanprendergast7384 Жыл бұрын
@@nanamuskuri6630A duvet is a fabric envelope with stuffing, ideally down or feathers, but can be any sort of "filling" if you envision the whole thing as a sandwich sealed on all sides. Sometimes called a comforter, it commonly has drawn over it another decorative fabric envelope which can be taken off and washed often or replaced with another differently patterned or colored one. This is called a duvet cover. A blanket is a flat piece of fabric with no stuffing and no need of such a thing, being commonly of warmer stuff or thicker fabric. Wool, say, instead of finer weave cotton or linen or silk, which duvet covers are usually made of. I hope this helps. By the way, many Americans don't know these different things any more than you. They are considered girlish and unmasculine, or beneath one's notice by many folks, even those who have them on their own beds.

Wonderful tips Nick! I've been doing the king blanket and quilt on a queen bed for years (we have a high queen bed) and love the draped look and feel it brings to my space. I also have framed art over the bed and on adjacent walls. Also have a lot of textures, throw blanket, accent pillows, waffle bed blanket, quilting, carpet, and floor to ceiling linen draperies (a must have for a lux look). I do have enough room for a end of bed bench and a sitting chair. But I do think the room would benefit by ditching the chair, so I'm thinking that over. I recently purged and reorganized my closet (what a game changer when you're getting ready every morning) and need to install my puck lights in there to complete that area. Since I have storage in my night stands (highly recommend them) to tame all the bedside clutter, keeping the night table for evening essentials only. All of these features create a very lux look and feel to my space, so your tips were very validating in that I seem to be on the right track. BTW, we have never had a TV in the bedroom, as we want it to be a peaceful and relaxing place. Thanks again for the video, keep up the great work!

Great idea on the duvet cover, esp. with so many queen-size bed items actually "full/queen." Orienting the bed contrary to expectations(running parallel to the narrower measurement of the space) can make the space look a lot larger by opening up floor space.

Yes, read the dimensions of several items and measure what you have, then give it a good think. I got a so-called quilt I use with a dust ruffle to hide what is under my bed because it was cheaper than the so-called bedspread from the same company with the same pattern choices. If I were to go back in time I would look at what the larger quilt cost plus dust ruffle vs the smaller size bedspread. I might make a different choice. And yes, try orienting the bed and furniture different ways, preferably before hanging things on the wall. It might surprise you. I have tried mine in three ways, due to noisy neighbors who no longer live there, and each has its own plus and minus.

A deep-night colour is an option I prefer for bedroom walls. Presently I have a deep chocolate ganache, but also have used navy blue, hunter green and charcoal gray to near black. Never got around to trying purple, but that would be interesting as would red. The outer space-like darkness is great for deep. Light absorbing ceiling paint in deep-shades much darker than builder's white also helps to create a near light-free environment. Other than perhaps a library/den I wouldn't do the rest of the rooms that way, but I love my cave-like bedroom.

This is one of the most enjoyable of your wonderful videos. I laughed my way through, along with learning a few things. 😊 Thank you!

Polarising age-old design conflicts such as rug over carpet etc might be a good idea for a future video and discussions. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the subject.

I've been doing the "king on a queen bed" duvet/comforter thing for YEARS. Lots of draping, plus I have a cast-iron bed frame, and I put my bed at an angle in a corner, so the damn pillows ALWAYS fell on the floor. Not anymore. I bought king-sized pillows for the shams, and they stay in place and keep the bed pillows from falling through the headboard. And it looks hella good! I also have a designated seating area with a fireplace (totally sexy!) where I have an overstuffed loveseat & two ottomans. Lots of textures, lots of warmth. And no, I am not Gwyneth. I live in Ohio, and having a humongous house is doable here!

On a budget such a thing is totally possible here in Ohio even in the big cities. But, "Shh!" don't be telling people how cheap it is to live here or they'll all want to move here and the cost of living will be jacked up sky-high. Just keep telling them how uncool it is here, how totally not chic.

@@susanprendergast7384 LOL! My bad! It's totally uncool to live here...not chic at all!

A king duvet in a queen cover on a queen bed is so fluffy and elite!

these topics are everywhere! why should we make our surrounding looks expensive when we can actually make them more relaxing and improve them!

I have a seating area in my large bedroom and i never sit there so you got that right for sure. But also, as you said, it looks inviting to have a nice place to sit. Great tips.

I went from a king to queen bed. I was not going to part with my king pillows so I kept my king size comforter and shams. It looks so much better than it did on the king bed! It definitely does make the bed look more expensive.

Just a tip if you live in an earthquake zone like me, please use canvas art or something light weight like a patterned rug, macrame or whatever hung above your bed in case it falls during a quake. Glass pictures with frames are going to fall and break your face. I have put nails on both sides of the pictures so when things start moving they won't go side to side, but lets be honest when your iron becomes a projectile you need to run. Since Nick lives in Vancouver he should be well aware of the need for this even though it isn't like LA with a quake every month. The big one is now due in the Pacific Northwest.

I downsized from king to queen several years ago, and kept all my king blankets and comforters. For one thing, I still loved them. And it was hella cheaper to keep 'er than buying all new bedding.

The first suggestion on your list is key, so thank you for passing it on. I accidentally bought a king-size duvet cover for my queen-size bed about 20 years ago. And wow, it looked great when I put in the bed, so I didn't return it. I've been buying kings ever since, and I often recommend it to friends.

I've done sizing up for years. Not for style but because I love huge blankets to wrap up in. Lol
