When we used a similar generator at the race track, we built a plywood box to set around it, with the roof open for ventilation, and we stapled scraps of plush carpet to the inside of the box to absorb some of the noise. This made a huge difference in noise.

Ray Lovett Hello Ray, I put a small Isuzu muffler on my WH7500E Generator that has a knock off Honda clone 12 HP single on it. Was better than most but still way to much noise. The Isuzu muffler made a world of difference but when I replaced the air cleaner with a Toro 322D canister air intake I can actually say it's quiet. My point don't overlook the intake on these small engines when trying to quiet them down. Be we'll.
@user-neo716654 жыл бұрын
A muffler that doesn't have a straight threw design will actually make it quiet. People don't put glasspacks on things for silence.
@garykish89514 жыл бұрын
@@addiumuppicus5738 People forget how much sound is intake generated. Auto companies do that with air boxes. They are usually cold air which is good but most can and do choke the air in someway. Only to pass the Fcuking EPA drive by sound test. Open up the airbox of every car you have and start cutting away at any plastic that is blocking airflow. Just Smooth everything out. Smooth is the magic word of the day. You can go crazy and start using sound waves to do other things and get very exotic but just cut all the fcukwad out of the air flow and you'll pick up some hp and improve your mpg. Sounds better too.

Air cooled without an enclosure is loud, even with a good muffler. An enclosure designed to properly guide the cooling airflow will do more to reduce noise. A water cooled engine is quieter than an air cooled engine. I picked up a 6kW 3 cylinder enclosed diesel and it sounds more like a car at fast idle, which I use for small concerts to power the stage.

My Generac 5500 (loud!) is already in an 8x10 tool shed in the back yard. The shed has vents at the peaks front and rear. But I still keep the front doors open for air flow. But the doors directly face the back of the house. However, I'm definitely going to route the exhaust out of the shed with the same kind of flexible exhaust tubing shown here. I'm also going to replace the hard plastic wheels with air-filled rubber wheels, and get some thick rubber pads for the metal feet in front. I also plan to add an awning window to the back of the shed. This way, I think I'll be able to close the front doors and open the rear window so that the unit gets enough fresh air. What I've read is that most of the noise comes not from the exhaust, but from the block. Your cherry bomb muffler looks very cool, though!

I used two 4 inch muffler clamps to clamp it to the frame of my 3500 watt Champion generator. My flex pipe was about an inch and a half in diameter. Great video... one might also consider digging a dedicated generator hole, which would yield much, much lower decibel levels! Plus the hole would provide better theft prevention, as the hole could be disguised with a small, fake dog house or a decorative mini, wooden wishing well (or whatever else one's imagination can think of)! If going the stealth/below ground route... I would strongly recommend adding a wireless remote start, as well as some type of wireless remote car alarm that comes with a remote pager or an alarm than can alert back to a cell phone! Remote starts and remote pager/cell phone alarms are fairly inexpensive and listed all over popular online auction sites these days =)

I've messed with plenty of generators over the years and I can tell you that if you can afford it then do yourself a big favor and buy a Honda or Yamaha from the start. They will last forever and they are extremely quiet. 85 DB is still very loud and a lot of the noise is coming from the actual engine and generator head itself. The Honda's and Yamaha's are enclosed and the exhaust just purrs. There is nothing wrong with your set-up, just too loud for me. I still like your videos! :)

When you said high theft issues and exhaust ran vertical helps disguise the locations made me think I would just leave it in garage and run exhaust up through roof like a chimney stack. You would 1) help eliminate the theft issue by it being kept inside your house. While 2) quieting it down with the added exhaust pipe along. Along with 3) making it even quieter for you in the house by having exhaust ran vertical out the roof. 4)extra theft prevention by exhaust ran vertical by exhaust sound waves traveling north south east and west from your home. 5) would have to build box and sound proof for outside generator that could then be broken into; so might as well use that building and sound proofing box in garage to further quiet it down. If they already can get to lawnmowers then I wouldn’t want to build a shed for a generator outside.

@gareon545 жыл бұрын
The majority of noise from these types of generators come from the engine, not the muffler. The muffler is mainly just a spark arrestor and they do not invest in a larger muffler because it makes little difference. The quiet inverter generators are quiet because the engine has been engineered from the beginning to be that way. What this video shows is an exercise in futility. There is a reason he never cranks the generator after installing the muffler. The best way to make a generator like this quiet is to build an acoustically dead box around it where air can still reach the engine to cool it and it can still exhaust freely. I know because I tried both methods!

Hi, nice vid, just a random fact, 10db is perceived as twice as loud to the human ear, so you effectively have made your generator half as quiet.

I have this exact Coleman generator w/ the Subaru Robin engine. You're right; it's a good unit for the price, but it's very loud. I'm building a shed for it now and was wondering how to route exhaust out of the shed and quiet it and happened upon your video. Love the cherry bomb exhaust. Only way I could see improving on your design is to make it dual exhaust. Like the Cosby 200 MPH skit w/ Carroll Shelby. "Everything dual." And paint "Type R" on the side. Thanks for the inspiration. Good luck w/ your shed.

Man that’s a huge improvement from 95 to 85 decibel. Another option would be to dig a 5’ to 6’ deep hole in the ground and lower the generator in there while running. It’ll be much more quieter and cheaper, just an idea

Cinder blocks, all stacked inline, so you have hollow holes running vertically. Fill the tubes with sand and pack it down, maybe add a little mortar between the blocks, but that is optional... totally soundproof.

Hello. I have a question. If you hooked the 5000 W generator to a motor that bypassed the IC Engine, that ran off the power grid, would you be able to lower your power bills? And, if you needed to use it as a Back up in Power outs, you could use the Engine again.

Thats an awesome idea: yo come out to see why your generator has stopped only to find your mover hot an out of gas and no generator. Another fun thing to do would be to put a bare small wire tapped into the spark plug wire right where you would grab it but insulated from the frame. I wouldn't mess with a sparky generator.

I used a Stens Muffler for Cub Cadet on my old (1987) Coleman Powermate 4000 with a threaded nipple and a clamp. NO DIFFERENCE. Beyond obnoxious LOUD! I was pissed! But I can buy 15 to 25 feet of 1.5" stainless flexible tubing and clamp it over the end of the tailpiece part to make a much bigger difference. A long tube does wonders sometimes. 85 db is still ridiculous!

A dB reduction of 10 means 1/1k of the sound. 10 times for each 3.2 dB. So a total of 1000 reduction. And inside of an enclosure, it would be legal to operate in Residential Areas in most locations.

Water is the best way to absorb sound. When starting the Space Shuttle , tons of water are directed towards the lower end of it to reduce the sound level, and this works. If you made a simple frame to place around your generator, and covered it ( top & all sides ) with a regular blanket, it would quiet it down. NOW....completely WET your blanket and you"ll BE SURPRISED !! The wet blankets WILL BE BEGGING for something or sound to absorb. And of course leaving opening for muffler & venting.

Sir. Have you ever heard of a water muffler? Fill a barrel half full of water. Keep the top on it and run your exhaust hose so it points at the water amd about 1/2 inch from the surface of the water. Decibles will drop by half. The only draw back is you would have to constantly monitor and add water. Much simpler then what your up to.

Since you used humor, I’m going to tell you why I uploaded the video without starting it when I finished the project, my plan was to take it outside and start it. However, it started sleeting out and I hate cold with a passion. I hate cold so much that I left my home in Connecticut at the age of 16 and went to Florida. My plan was to wait until it warmed up just a bit to start it, but it didn’t. At the time, I was a long haul trucker and had to leave for my 3 weeks tour. I decided to upload the video without starting it because I knew I would be gone for 3 weeks and had nothing else to upload. Now, all these years later, I’m retired and living on social security. My Adsense money from youtube fills in the cracks where my SS doesn’t. This is one of my highest viewed videos and I leave it up for three reasons. One, the view count helps my channel rise in the youtube stats they use to determine your worth to potential advertisers. Second, this video alone generates about 1200 a year for me in additional income and third, based on some of its comments, it has truly been a window into the mass consciousness of a spoiled narcissist and self centered world. Have a nice day and thank you for making your point using humor. I understand it’s a disappointment to not hear it run, but now you know why.

Compared to modding one of these to be as quiet, and still not as powerful, reliable and efficient... The cost is marginal. Unless you never actually use it much, then buying any generator is a waste of money. You want cheap, go without power, you save 100% and reduce your hidden costs of toting around tons of powered devices and gas and packing, down to 0% extra costs. People lived without power for 315,000 years... I am sure we can all survive a weekend, or month, or year, without it... After all, we are more "advanced"... So advanced, that we can't live without everyone-else doing stuff for us... Giving us jobs, food, medical treatment, social-security, power, water, clothes... Ironic, we seem to be returning back to the point where ancestors from 315,000 years ago are smarter than us... Less then 0.01% of us know how to make fire... Back then, they all could make fire! Without lighters and gasoline! Just spend the extra money... It is totally worth it. You rarely see videos on how to fix them, or make them better, because they are already perfect. There is a reason why they sell 8000% more than all these other brands. There is a reason that all these other brands keep trying to copy them. (Key-word is TRYING, then failing, and having to offer them for less, because no-one would pay more for it.) But hey, if you got the time, the extra money and the skill to make fire without gas and lighters... Then go for it!

+NoesisAndNoema ... What?!?! Just pay Honda $1,000 for 1800w when I can get 10,000+ watts for less. Reminds me when back in 1989 Lexus LS400 came out with a Mercedes beater for 30% less money. So now it's a matter of finding the diamond in the rough and there are a handful of good competitors, just do some research and get a good warranty. Honda makes great generators but their design is getting dated as now dual fuel is a good idea with the crappy ethanol infused gas getting bad in just a couple weeks. The closest ethanol free station is 30 miles round trip from me so propane is the way to go. Propane is the trend and until Honda steps up I'll put my money somewhere else.

Like the muffler. I've been thinking of keeping large bags of mulch or potting soil on hand. Make a box around the generator by sand bagging the soil/mulch bags for sound insulation. Leave gaps for air intake and exhaust and drop a piece of plywood over the top with a couple of bags on it, and I think the sound level would be reduced. The sounds of a generator and lights on during a shtf situation could bring a lot of trouble. I've also been looking at furniture moving blankets from Harbor Freight, to use as black out curtains for the windows. Their cheap and should be thick enough but I haven't tested the idea yet.
@3beltwesty9 жыл бұрын
Nice idea. Most of these generators are 2 poles thus run at 3600 rpm for 60 Herz AC. That of course means 60 revs per second and the piston fires 30 times per second. These low frequencies are hard to attenuate and require wall thickness to cut the sound level down. Thus a thick walled doghouse would work. A concern is the enclosure could catch on fire thus dumb dirt is better than a moving blanket. Years ago I saw a generator housing built into the side of the hill, so the 3 sides are just dirt and the top and front was something was removeable
