There are a few suggestions for Mac speed ups at home Use the Activity Monitor. If you want to see what apps are using up your system, open the Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Turn off visual effects. Most Macs are now capable of running Mac OS X Mavericks. Keep updating your software (and it set to auto update) Clean up your hard drive. (I learned these and the reasons they work from Achak speed plan site )

Thank you so much for the info. I downloaded the malwarebytes. It worked great and finally got rid of the genio and spigot problem. I tried different processes to get rid of these and couldn't but this problem eliminated them. Thanks again for your help.

MacKeeper was actually not that bad back in the days before MacOS X release. It was a really handy tool and it boosted the performance by around 4-15%. I used it while editing videos and the videos rendered really fast. This tool/anti-virus got bad after the MacOS X release and it even went so far, that it gave people fake messages that they have problems with their OS and they need to purchase a pro version of the software in order to solve the problem :P

Hey man! Great video! I had MacKeeper on my computers for a long time and i was wondering why the performance increases were minimal. Now I know. My Macs are awesome now. Thank You. And Hey, That tick, that you notice. I couldn't even detect for a second. If you hadn't mentioned it I wouldn't have known. I know you feel it and think that you have to "warn" people, just in case they notice, but you really don't. They won't notice, and if they do, screw 'em? My mac has an application called "Adobe Flash Player Install Mana..." and I think it the flash downloader, I want to delete it from my applications, but I don't want to get rid of flash either.. Also, mackeeper got installed on mine too, when I downloaded flash. I think flash installs it onto your mac very sneakily because it came with my flash...

get.adobe.com/flashplayer/otherversions/ - try this link. Adobe only partners with McCafe and Intel so you may get some weird program with Flash but it most certainly would not be MacKeeper. Make sure that if, during the download process, it asks you if you want to download this awesome program with flash select no.

This guy really misspoke on this video. He said that Macs are more prone to viruses, he meant to say that Macs are far less likely to get viruses than Windows or Linux. In fact, every study by all the reputable security companies show that Macs get less than 0.3% of all viruses worldwide. The majority of infections is still on Windows but Linux and Droid are rapidly gaining a huge share.

You can easily get by with a few free programs like CCleaner, ADWCleaner and MalwareBytes. I would suggest that before spending a lot of money on a CPU hungry anti-virus program like Norton. In my opinion it slows down your computer big time especially on Windows.

I personally use Sophos - its free. I have used BitDefender in the past, I believe it runs for around 40 bucks and works great also. If you are looking for a free solution I would go with Sophos.

I downloaded malware bytes and c cleaner and both have been going very slow when searching through everything. Is that normal? It's been taking about 10 to 15 min for each scan

Some parts of the scan will take longer than others; especially if the size of the files is large.

It would depend on a few factors. If individual pages on the web are taking a while to load it would be the speed of your internet. This could be affected by the amount of people on it and the available bandwidth available at the time you are loading the page. If your system itself is running slow go ahead and list the specs of your laptop (year, model, ram, processor, etc.)

Hi please help me I have late 2009 macbook unibody A1342 w 8 gb ram and old 250 GB HHD with old Snow Leopard software. I just installed new Samsung 500GB SSD 850 EVO and when I started up I see flashing "?" why? It wont let me start to see anything - is that something to do with the old software that is not compatible?

Hi Paul, The flashing ? means there is no operating system on the hard drive so it is not sure what to boot to. Since you installed a new hard drive there is no OS on it. Install the newest operating system for your mac and install it on a usb and boot to the USB and install the OS. Once you install the OS you will be able to boot with no issues.

CCleaner -- formerly "CrapCleaner" -- is a marvelous app for Windows, Mac, and Android, and probably other platforms as well. The one downside is that it will hose your logins and passwords unless you take care to circumvent it deleting those files. Not a Mac guy but thought I would add the warning. And, no, I don't know how to prevent it from doing that. I just remember my logins and passwords and re-establish them when queried. (Sorry, wish I could be of more help.)
