When you live in a third world country, like mine(Philippines), a Mountain Bike is almost a must. Our roads have a lot of "features" where you will be thankful that you have a suspension to dampen those bumps.

I commute to work 5 days a week. I lock out the front of my hardtails suspension and bring a spare t shirt with me so I'm not sweaty all day. The best part though is the cycle back home when the day hasnt been the best or a bit long. - That ride home always helps me feel a bit better :)

When cycling back from work, I turned a 4.6 mile trip into a 9.2 mile trip through the local parks and scenic route. Added an extra hour on my commute, but for health benefits and my own mental health, just taking that extra time for myself has helped over the last couple of months. If I plan a route, I don't care how long it takes me to get home, if I can bypass any incline hills/ roads, with woods, then the wife knows I'll microwave my tea when I eventually get home lol.

2 things will automatically improve a mtb for road use , 1. set your seat high enough . 2. Set your staring stem as high as it will go or replace for a longer one. The reason for this is trail or dirt riding your mostly standing ,whereas commuting is about comfort so you can concentrate on traffic This makes riding effortless and comfortable

When I worked in San Francisco I would have a couple route options that would either allow for a dirt detour or the quicker street option. Both routes I would pair with a ferry ride to get across the bay. Also I would often commute one way and break it up between 2 days. Drive the bike and a change of clothes on day 1. Leave the car and clothes and ride home. Next day ride back in to a set of fresh clothes. No pack needed

I have a 9 km ride to work, and I ride my Kona Unit X. The large tires are perfect for all the detours needed when there are road works everywhere, and for the snowy roads in the winter time. We have showers at work and shoe shelves, so I've left a towel and shoes at work, and use handlebar bags and a frame bag. My laptop fits in one of the handlebar bags, and i wrap some clothes around it to keep it safe.

I ride to work most weekdays on my MTB. I have a road bike but find the MTB much more fun and versatile, (I can vary my route by taking stair options), even though it's a bit slower. The MTB also has tubeless tires and the road bike doesn't and I find when it rains while I'm on the road bike you can almost guarantee I'll get a puncture because the tires get sticky when wet and pick up the rubbish on the shoulder of the road.

🤓 Best thing about commuting to work on my bike: the ride _back home!_ Talking getting a few extra miles in?! *THAT'S* where they at! No requirement to get home, battling traffic, and switch clothes first - start riding the very moment work's over!!! 🙌🏻

frame bags for the win... the less you carry on your body the better, especially when you're talking about keeping the sweat down. not only bring a change of clothes and shoes but also deodorant, travel bottle of shampoo and a microfiber shop cloth (or a backpackers towel if you have longer hair). this way you can always wash up in the sink if you don't have a shower at the office. I also keep extra socks at the office in case I get caught in the rain. there's nothing worse than putting your dry foot into a sopping wet shoe... this way you've got some socks to absorb the moisture out so the shoes can hopefully dry out during the day. my 45 Nrth boots a waterproof but if I'm wearing shorts the water can run down my leg and into my boots. fortunately they have an insert that I can take out which allows them to dry out much quicker

Running a 27.5+ trail hardtail as my commuter now. Rigid narrow tire bikes are a no-go for Russian city (ok, you can ride them but only summer and in some parts you'll wish you had suspension). Some forest trails are smoother then unrepaired pavements. Also, 27.5+ can take much more punishment and cope with my weight better. Normal MTB wheels... Got tired of changing the spokes. Also, the winter. When snow it all around, roads are only cleaned enough for cars to go and pavements are not cleaned at all, you do want those low gear ratios and wide tires. Yea, riding bike at -30C is still fun!

I think commuting on mtb is safer than road or hybrid bike , especially for Indians , basically indian roads are asphalt trails . Wider and treaded tyres give more grip , suspension helps in abdorbing potholes and footpaths and disc brakes make it easier to modular stopping in rain and mud.

You guys should remake this video. Nothing wrong with it per se, actually the opposite. Its a great idea and great value content. There's a lot more you can include, and provide some specific examples for fast rolling mtb tires (size and compound aspects as well). I would personally recommend anyone who's commuting with their MTB to try the Hutchinson Python 3 or the Goodyear PEAK. Having a tire like that is a GAME CHANGER. Video quality will also benefit alot from a re-shoot, and the video may end up picking up a lot more videos now that this is a somewhat trending topic with all the low cost entry level modes that , Scott,Trek, Canondale e.t.c have started putting out at a lower price

I commute 30km 5 days a week on a Giant Iguana hardtail steel frame with a Marzocchi Bomber fork. Only the frame remains as I've changed every component over the years. Built the wheels on STX RC hubs with Japanese Araya rims on which I have Conti Race King (Puregrip on the back and Black Chili on the front.) For being MTB tires they work very well on asphalt. I will ride that bike until the frame breaks in half, love it to bits!

Finally, a Video on the topic I wanted and had been figuring out for a while. I think that if you can only havr one bike and you love MTB, but need to use the bike for commuting daily then a good bet could be to get a hardtail, get an extra set of wheels and tyres for the pavement and have a locking front fork. That way the nice hardtail goes from a super capable off roading machine to a relaxed road bike with the swap of the wheels and the locking of the fork. For the accesories, I think a basic one is the bag and the lock. Followed by the glasses and the light and maybe a phone holder would be nice too. I refuse to use the same trail tyres for the pavemente because they will last nothing and because they will make it super hard to pedal up to road speed. That is why I am thinking about a set of pavement tyres already mounted in a set of wheels to simply remove the trail set and bolt on the pavement set. Finally, adding to it, I might suggest a different saddle that results more comfortable for extended seated periods on long distance riding. That if you dont have a dropper already installed.

When I commute on my mountainbike HT, I sometimes find it helpful to go the opposite way with the front tire pressure. Going lower can really help with the tiny bumbs on the asphalt, or when the asphalt goes "rough and bumby", I can really lay the power down, and the front tires will absorb the small bumbs or w/e there might be (fallen branches), and not slowing me down😎✌️🍻

yeah that sounds like a lube issue. you definitely should not be getting a dirty chain riding streets I would use a dry lube every time unless you're constantly submerging your chain on the trail. the chain lube I'm using right now is really good, and I'd tell you what it is except that the label is worn off. I have to lube my chain maybe once every 3 days and I've had the bottle since October and it's only now just getting to where I need to replace it. I commute every day rain or shine for the last 6 years. all I know is that it was one of the more performance based lubes that the bike shop had, such that I was worried when he gave it to me that it was not going to be as premium as the price suggested but it turns out it's actually better than most others that I've tried

Personally I'd recommend a cheap as chips second hand bike for commuting, one that you can just use and abuse. I only have one bike due to limited space and I commute everyday with it and use occasionally on the weekends. The salt on the road kills my chain and rear cassette. Yes I should clean it, but I can't be arsed. I find about every year or two I have to change both. Incredibly cheap get around considering I use it for everything. I also work a physical job outside so I don't have to worry about getting dirty or wet on my way in. That would make it a bit of a pain.

so glad i started out with a cheap used hardtail. that bike has become the rat/commuter bike now, although i still keep it nice as it receives hand me downs from my FS bike.

I'm commuting on very expensive bikes in the last 6 years, i had many full suspension carbon bikes, xc bikes, but even for commuting i don't like when my ass is getting hit by big bumps on the streets, here in holland many roads are made these small rock thingys i don't know the english word for it.

Comparing the cost, exercise, and health benefits, the ebike wins easily vs the car. For a bike commuter that might need to go over some hills or has a 30 km commute one way, the ebike wins against the bike. No, ebikes should not be in cycling competitions but in the everyday commute, ebikes will be a strong contender vs cars and bikes. For commuting my wife loves her electric fat tad etrike and my son loves his EMTB.

My fat tire bike commute is a rocky canal trail then poorly paved roads with gravel on the side. Every day of cycling commuting is more fun than using my truck. Less expensive too. Thankfully my work has a good locker room with a shower that apparently only I use. I have front and rear bike racks with panier bags. Eastern Idaho has weather that goes from -20 °F to 110 °F with rain, sandstorms, snow, freezing fog (worst possible weather ever), 50 mph headwinds, wildfires, and about a 30 °F daily change in temperature. It can be full suit cold in the morning and 👕 and shorts in the afternoon. In addition, I get to see 🐎 🦆🦅🐝🐓🐔🐐🐑🌽🍒🍎🍊🌻🍑🎣on my ride to and from work. The office has a huge courtyard in the back where I lock up my fat tire bike. My ~8 mile daily cycling commute is a job perk that I love!

I'm pretty spoiled. My commute is 7 miles of driving and 10 miles of trail each way. I can shorten the way home to 8 miles when I'm super tired too. I do it on an Enduro bike

What particular shoes would be a good fit for clipless pedals and regular walking , changing shoes could expensive and would be a space waste , thanks 🙏

Depends on the fit, but almost any clipless ready shoe or sneaker is a terrible walking option once you install the plate that goes bolted in the sole. Maybe try flat pedals or simply carry a pair of normal shoes in a backpack. If you find some please share, it would ne super nice to have the option to make it

No worth it. i use a 30+ yr old SS converted road bike with new budget wheelset for commuting. Previously i used it 2x7 when i used to climb to work. It all cost me about 200€. Switching TL tyres and using my XT drivetrain just never worth for commuting. Besides a drivetrain change when worn on mtb is almost the price of the other bike, there is a much bigger chance of getting hit by a car. old cromo frame brakes? I weld it or buy another from the price of a tire
